I had an Akita for almost15 years. We rescued him from an animal shelter. He was about 9 months old and was one of the most loving dogs I've ever had. He was very protective and gentle with my 6-month-old granddaughter when she visited. He passed away last year and I still miss him.

Be very very careful with food as these some of these dogs won’t take prisoners (some will merely snap or growl, whereas as others will issue a correction (nip or bite which can lead to a fight or worse) and if a house cat or dog gets too close they can and usually will lash out with explosive violence). With a 130 LBS heavily boned and muscled powerful dog, you really want to avoid triggering aggression so don't leave full feed bowls down if there is more than one dog or pet in the area. I have seen my female zealously guard a stick of string cheese and with this breed, the sound of play growling verses actual fighting is almost impossible to differentiate unless you are seeing the interaction and can see signs of play and keep away. If they are not wagging their tail, they generally are not playing but these dogs may posture or adopt a cat like commando belly crawl position before sprining up and attacking so they can be very hard to read. Many Akitas are not like other breeds in regard to their vocalizations - they seldom bark and they often play full contact as in "tackle football" and "wrestling" with resource guarding as a large part of the play and these are with Akitas that were raised together and are opposite sexed. With an outside dog, I would never trust them to play nice. They could surprise me and behave or they could simply attack an outsider. Again, the difference between play and fighting with this breed is hard to discern based off the sounds they make. They are sometimes more like wolves than dogs in this regard. Too many times they will react aggressively to a strange cat or dog so I don't take chances. They are not vicious or unpredictable but they are edgy and highly territorial with a dominant prey drive so it never pays to let them roam off leash or engage with strange dogs or animals if you want to avoid unpleasant situations. Another reason why dog parks and doggy day care are not usually good ideas for sexually mature Akitas. They are often just too edgy for other dogs and their owners and if things go sideways, it happens in just seconds so a leash is always a necessity around strange animals. Most dog fights with Akitas and a dog they live with already involve resource guarding or jealousy and once a fight happens, they tend to occur more frequently with greater ferocity until separation gates are needed. Do not feed an Akita around other animals - very predictable way to provoke a correction and violence as these dogs all consider themselves to be the sole alpha dog. You cannot train an alpha dog to be a beta so think of this breed like the top wolf in a pack and treat it accordingly. These dogs are edgy and they will not tolerate any challenge to their status from another dog or cat in the household. As for strange dogs or cats ….forget about it…they will usually go after any strange animal in their space.

Obviously one can only comment on the dogs one has direct experience with. My 140 lbs unaltered male is like yours - loves most people- and when he was younger- he played with other dogs and enjoyed their company. As he matured around 2.5 years however he suddenly became hyper dominant and reactive to aggression from other dogs such that since you never know which dogs will be aggressive, I could no longer let him around other dogs as when he reacted - it was full red zone in 1 to 2 seconds with no growling or warning. He actually seems to enjoy being challenged by other dogs. No amount of socialization or training will overcome such brain chemistry and genetics. He is tolerant of cats he was raised with but will try to kill any new cat and with wildlife he is 100% predatory. Great dog but you cannot let such a dog roam off leash because other dogs will commit suicide by Akita if you do. He does not attack or notice every dog, only those who behave aggressively towards him. Due to his size - most dogs react to him with fear based aggression so there you go. He will not tolerate a challenge or turn the other cheek and after witnessing him in action against my intact male chow chow and run down and shred coyotes-I would never take a chance with him in a dog park. Great dog but he really needs to be protected from himself!

I always say that training and socialization brings down the genetics a small amount. Might bring a dog at a 10 down to an 8, or a dog that's a 5 down to a 3, but you'll never get a 10 down to a 2.

you just told my unneutered corso story, as pack leader, I can introduce new animals in a very controlled environment, one at a time. we just got an akita shep rott mix puppy, and it took him 2 days, now their best bud. it's not ideal, being dog people, most of our friends have dogs, makes having a BBQ tricky

  • @rf8481

    @rf8481

@@ragidyman9551 War dog breeds are not the best choice for block parties or Large gatherings. These dogs need to have their space - and when strange animals or people suddenly “invade” their exclusive space, it can trigger explosive ferocious aggression. Best to always give war dog breeds a very wide berth - most prefer to be left alone and many won’t tolerate an invader in their exclusive territory. I would never put two male Akitas together in any any space and expect them to be pals, oh it could happen, but it is far more likely that there would be a ferocious fight. You have to be insane to disrespect a war dog’s need for exclusive personal space. Oh there are exceptions but most Akitas do not want to share their space, food, toys, affection or status with a strange dog. Often there is no way to tell whether an Akita will tolerate a strange dog other than by trial and error, so caution and social distance achieved via fences, leashes and gates is usually an absolute requirement to avoid a very bad day. You can take the edge off with training and socialization but you can never make a war dog into a kitten or puppy that loves everyone. Even the best show dogs can get triggered by other show dogs. American Akitas are great dog right up until they toggle into war dog mode in 1 to 2 seconds very often with no vocal warning. They don't vocalize before they throw down like other breeds so they can be hard to read as they will usually attack suddenly with full ferocity so there is often no margin for error. Sure they might behave or even like a strange dog but the risk is usually too high that they might not get along. So meet and greets on the sidewalk, the yard, or in a park are generally high risk low reward affairs which are best avoided for risk management reasons.

@@TheAkitaLife Amen - they can be just a like a normal dog puppy and then one day they start acting like a wolf defending territory and most owners get blind sided by a fight with a dog they already live with or a local dog in the area running off leash. These dogs are lethal in combat so fences and leashes are a necessity. Akitas seldom will bark at or charge a foe, but if some dog decides to take them on, the Akita will immediately toggle into samurai mode and they are highly proficient and explosively powerful street fighters so keep them leashed once they hit sexual maturity (7 to 9 month for bitches - 12 to 18 months for males). It only takes seconds for these dogs to defeat an opponent and until you see them perform in a threat situation, you just not comprehend how proficient these dogs are. It is not something you want to trigger and something you always have to be aware of and on guard for. Do not put them in situations where another dog can charge or attack them - as suicide by Akita is a very real risk. A 130 LBS male Akita can take down an opponent in literally 2 seconds and they will bite the back the neck of an opponent and pin it if they are in a good mood or if not they have the power to terminate an opponent so don't tempt the fate as Akitas are generally intolerant of any form of aggression from another dog.

Great video! I was the proud owner of an Akita girl for 10 years. I never let her be unleashed with other dogs after she turned into adulthood, but she tolerated the ones who tried to get her attention in one way or another. She just totally ignored them until they gave up. She was crazy about all the people she knew from she was a puppy. Everyone else she ignored. Well - except for ONE time when she was about 4 years old.Two drunk guys tried to aproach me on the street. From their comments - probably not with the best intenions, so I got scared. She noticed it instantly, and went into full protection mode. She never pulled the leash, so I didn't experience her insane power and ability to attack until then. Good for them that I managed to hold her back. Her best friend was my horse. They spent a long time every day grooming each other, play and just hang out on the horse field. A very special, rare and beautiful relationship.100% trust and respect for each other. I always had dogs during my 50 years on this planet.I loved them all dearly, but she was my heart. The biggest issue I actually had with her was other people. Telling them that she prefered to be left alone by someone she didn't know well, or play with their dogs. I know that most people don't have any experience with the breed, but you just get tired of explaining the same thing over and over.

I think another common myth is that Akitas are stubborn. I contend they are not, in fact, stubborn at all. They are independent-thinking. If they aren’t obeying you then they simply haven’t been convinced that your idea is better than their idea. Which is why strong leadership, mutual respect, and a loving bond are paramount. You also have to accept the fact that sometimes this dog will do as they please-which is one of their most endearing traits, to me.

Had an Akita mix, was in her own crate at 8 weeks old at that shelter, even only a couple of months old she would NOT assimilate to other animals or dogs. Tried to remedy this once when she was very young, and she stayed awake all night trying to fight with my cousins lab. She wouldn’t let up, just stood wide awake at the door all night hoping someone would open the door so she can go right back at it lol… the stubbornness was at a whole different level there. That’s when I stopped trying to force her to “get along” with other dogs. It wasn’t going to happen. As time passed she was easier to control when on a leash next to me. But even then she would occasionally get out the door and run away towards other ppls yards where their dogs were out and start problems and trouble, just a huge pain, but very lovable to the family and ppl. She was such a happy active dog, and I miss her bc even if it was frustrating, her antics were kinda funny

Well ... seeing as how my Akita male kept me from getting mugged one night, don't know that I'll agree with you that - at least for me - I'm not walking "a loaded gun". He sensed something that night that I did not, and without him I don't know whether I would have finished the walk without a fight. Once I got him under the light of a streetlamp and let him out to the end of the leash to confront the little thug, the thug decided there were probably easier targets. Although he tolerates most humans - as long as they keep their distance - he only truly likes/loves his "puppy pack" humans. That December night about 5 years ago taught me a very valuable lesson - trust his instincts over mine in most cases. Even today, on a normal walk, I know who is carrying around negative energy and who isn't, just by his reaction to them. Oh, and for some odd reason, he HATES school buses and would surely attack every one of them he sees if I would let him. And the only thing I've found him to be terrified of is the garbage truck. Edit: Oh, and another interesting thing I've noticed about my companion/guardian: He absolutely WILL NOT take a treat from someone he does not know. He won't even take it if they hand it to me, to give to him. At 7, he's still a wonderment to me. Best dog I've ever had. Or known of.

This is a Great video, and it’s important to note that the bears Akita’s were used to hunt were the relatively small Japanese bear, not a North American Brown bear, (grizzly). And as you pointed out, the dogs were used in packs to corner or flush and trap/distract the bear, not actually take the beat down and kill it. Similar to the way packs of rodesian ridgebacks were used to hunt lion. But I will disagree with you on the hair, lol! Well, actually agree. When the coat blowing starts, if you don’t have time to literally brush them for an hour every day, you will have massive drifts of clouds of soft, fluffy dog hair. When it’s coat blowing time I have to vacuum every day and brush him every day, (both of which I am, admittedly, too lazy/busy to do every day), so I end up with Saharan level vistas of dog hair after about 3 days lol. It’s a thing. But I love my dog, so it’s no big.

Akitas are great dogs, I owned 2 of them, my current Akita whose name is Diesel is a fantastic dog but did need a lot of socializing as a puppy. It is very good care for Akitas to be trained and socialized when very young. They are very protective of their pack and a Akita can hurt a person very easily if they want to. Socializing them helps them get used to people in a non aggressive way and makes them even better companions. Their natural tendency to guard and protect their territory is a part of them, but having them well trained is advantageous for any Akita owner. Akitas do have a sense of being a bit more independent than some other breeds of comparable size and temperament like the German Shepard for example, but having them well trained negotiates this pretty well. For any first time owner I suggest to research the breed well and make sure their training and socialization start early and have fun. If there's any difficulty refer to a dog trainer who is familiar with the breed, like I did and great help and advise did wonders. Great video with great info!

They are only aggressive and violent when triggered - try putting two unaltered 2 year old male American Akitas in a small room together and see if they enjoy each other's company or take a 2 year old 135 LBS American Akita stud dog to a playground full of aggressive off leash dogs and see what happens. Oh sure, 20 percent of the time, nothing will happen, so unless you are degenerate gambler with respect for your dog's and other dogs' wellbeing, you do not allow an American Akita the opportunity to fill body bags as they are more than capable of doing so in seconds. Until you see one rip into a coyote and shred it in seconds, you cannot comprehend how explosively fast, powerful and lethal they can be - if off leash, you would be totally unable to intervene in time to prevent true carnage. While most Akitas do not start dog fights, their size makes them a magnet of for other dogs who see them as threats or react with fear based aggression. Most Akitas are incapable of turning the other cheek when attacked and most will respond instantly to ferociously to aggression or a challenge from another dog. I say "most" as there are always exceptions and variations based on individual dog, the mood of the dog, the specific situation, the location, and the time of day. You can train and socialize these dogs to take the edge off, but you are unlikely ever to be able to totally overcome their intolerance for any kind of challenge to their status or physical aggression or their hyper-territoriality. Unless you raise these dog as puppies with many other dogs, it is unlikely that you could introduce a new dog of the same sex without major issues and many once they hit sexual maturity whether spayed or neutered or not, will cease to tolerate other same sexed dogs in their space.

Im a pitty lover, I use to to fostering for pittys. I had met a few akitas and had bad experiences, so an akita would be the last dog i would ever be around... until last year. I got a call from my best friend. Her friend had been made homeless and the shelter wouldn't allow the dog. He had it since it was a puppy, and it was 4. So im like sure, i will take the dog, thinking its a shitzu or some wee dog. He sends a pic and its an American akita ! I was like ok, we can try this, but when we met, she wasnt interested in me whatsoever. We tried and tried and she just wasnt connecting with me, which is odd because im like the crazy animal lady 😂, so the day comes when i need to take this dog, im anxious af. I go and meet them. He hands her over and walks away. It took me over an hour to get that dog to move from that spot. People thought i was crazy 😂 or i was stealing her. Eventually i get her home. Shes intimidating the life out of me. So im like i cant allow this. She needs to know whos alpha. So over the next few days, i took her our, showed her that i was in control, she was a really anxious dog, scared of quite a lot of stuff, so i put her in some situations to show her she was safe and she had nothing to worry about. Every weekend he would come and get her for the night, and he started noticing something change in her. When it came time for me to go pick her up again, she would go absolutely mental😂 the way she did when she seen him. So months go by, he finally gets a home, they move in, she loved spending time with me that much that whenever i want, i can go pick her up and bring her to my home for a few days. Shes an amazing dog. She has totally changed not only my perception of akitas, but she changed my life. I took her on right as my father was going in for a double leg amputation and almost died. She was that amazing, the hospital let me bring her up to see my dad, she motivated him, and the whole ward, the entire hospital took time to come and say hi to her. She was our 🌈 at our darkest times. Im her doggy godmother 😂 she is the most unique dog me or my family has ever met. For something so big and powerful, she is the most gentle, aware, understanding creature ive ever met. She puts on shows for us, where she just acts goofy 🤪 playing with her toys, she lies on my dads stumps a certain way that helps him sleep, she lets my 83 year old grandmother walk her, she pulls my dad about in his wheelchair 😂😂

You try and explain it, then the anxiety kicks in, then it makes the dog worse 😂😭 she's murder when she does it, but that's the only thing I can say about her that's negative 💖 she's awesome! Coolest, biggest dog I've ever met ! I would adopt her in a heartbeat, but unfortunately her dad also adores her 😒🤣 thought about dog napping her but if I go to jail, I won't see her 😂

My Akita honestly was a gentlemen, the most perfect dog I have ever had. It’s not for everyone, super strong and not all dog trainers are suitable in training Akitas. Very stubborn in taking commends if your tone of voice is not respectful towards them. They have a dragging power Equivalent to 3 German shepherds

I have two unrelated Akita‘s, one male and one female. I did not breed them. I got them at eight weeks old and they are now 11 years old. I hope I still have them years from now, but I know how unrealistic that might be. When I don’t have them anymore, I think I will be too old to handle such a large dog, so I would like to get a Sheeba in you. I don’t know anyone locally whom I can talk to about this. I am blind, and I would like to pet a Sheeba in you to see what they feel like. My female Akita is long-haired, and my male Akita is short haired. He is about 120 pounds, and she is 83 pounds. My littlest dog is my female yellow lab guide dog. They all get along great with each other. If anyone knows where I can find a Sheeba NU breeder, please let me know. Thank you.

They're not registered with the Akita Club of America, based on that alone I would avoid them. I've also heard some trusted breeders recommend to steer clear of them as well. To find a breeder near you, check this list: www.akitaclub.org/breeder-by-location-list/

i have thought that with any breed that it is 85% raising and 15% breed. but I i had a 125 lbs. pit lab mix that made people walk yards away from me and our yard, truth is he would have licked them to death before thinking to bite anyone. and Yes i'm thinking very seriously about an akita puppy.

It really depends on the dog. Sometimes it'd 95% in how you raise them. Some dogs how you raise them has no effect

Unfortunately some dogs just have a "mean streak" in them. I think generally the breed is softening from years of selective breeding, but your story is a great example of how "it's all in how you raise them!" is BS.

Don't get one as your first dog. You have to be the alpha. They are super loyal the shed their winter coat in the spring. Mine died of Bloat at like 11. They are super smart and only bark if something is there but very quiet dogs

The so-called “ American Akita” are different from the developments in the bloodlines in Japan and Taiwan. Who are, by Japanese considered to be more gentle and cuddly and kid friendly lovable. Many suggest calling the “ American” version more correctly;” Amerikitas”. This could help homeowners insurance adjustment for vicious dog surcharges

The statistics don't support that though. There are plenty of maulings by American Akitas in the US.

It depends on the age of the kids. EYE to EYE level with kids and a teenage old Akita could be a problem. American Akitas are called the babysitters.
