    You are too funny, you were so polite about it. The tennis ball concept, I can maybe see that on a smaller scale down the road because of arthritic fingers, but not yet😅. Thank you!

    I have recently found that since I have a large blanket project stuffed in a bag while I work, that it is better for me to keep my skein or ball of acrylic yarn in a plastic bag. I will either use a large zipper lock bag and keep it closed except for a space to allow free pulling of the yarn or I will use a clear plastic bag with an open top but roll the end closed from one side and secure with a clip so that it leaves a small opening. I have used both methods to keep the skein/ball from getting tangled with other items in my bag and it also helps keep it free of debris or animal hair. When I change colors, I can tuck the extra tail length in the bag so that only a small tail is free to grab the next time and it makes finding the free end easier.

    I just love the concept of this video! “Doesn’t work for me, but hey…!” Reminds me of making an apple pie; start with tart apples, mix them with lemon juice and then add a ton of sugar. Years ago, I found a sweeter apple that makes perfectly nice pies, doesn’t turn brown which I could care less about since cinnamon does that anyway, and requires far less sugar. No one ever said no to a homemade pie! Love you, Tuula!

    I went to a craft fair today where someone was selling hand worked alpaca and mohair yarn in exquisite colours. Far too expensive for my meagre budget, but I just wished that I could crochet something beautiful for the seller, to make the yarn more attractive to other buyers. Just looking at the cakes, balls and skeins of yarn without seeing a finished piece of work didn't help them to sell their product. Sadly I have a language barrier so I didn't feel competent to offer any help. Enjoy your travels to Ireland - a most beautiful country.

    My skeins tend to travel on the floor quite a bit. I assumed this was normal after observing my friend and family members. I take my shoes off at the front door and I don't ever wear even slippers in the room I crochet, so having a skein on the floor doesn't bother me, but mine tend to get tangled around table and chair legs, so I do put them into any container that's within reach, and I also keep my hook and notions for the project in it when I'm not using them. I found the hard way about feeding a yarn through a hole when I was new to crochet. It only works if you will finish the whole yarn ball or intend to cut the yarn before adding another one. I tried to learn the Russian join once and gave up on it: too fiddly and totally unnecessary. I find that in most cases a knot disappears into most crochet pretty well. I use most often a reef/square knot.

    I've used the Russian join numerous times. It IS a lot of work. I like ur way MUCH better👍! I use mostly acrylic yarn like Caron Simply Soft, Bernat, Lion Brand. The softer acrylic yarn. The 3 turn is awkward for me so i generally just do 2 turns. I haven't had a problem. When i 1st started crocheting again, i tried various yarn weaves on hand. Was more awkward so i just hold it between my fingers. The tennis ball & yarn bowl are useless too IMO. I've tried using a container w/ holes i put in lid for the yarn. It became more of a hassle. The main crochet tool i use is a sturdy plastic purple yarn winder from Amazon. That's now something i can't live w/o now😁. Anyways. Beautiful scenery Tuula. THX for the video. I use acrylic for everyday blankets and have found the Russian join eventually comes apart. I don't use it anymore. You can buy small tennis balls (about 1.5" or 3.8cm diameter). I wonder if that was the size intended for the crochet hook tip, but someone somewhere along the line misunderstood and used a regular tennis ball instead 🤣 There is a project bag for yarn that has holes in the top to thread yarn through.Sounds good until you realise some of the yarn has to go over the zipper section when you put the project away. That means you can't close the bag without getting yarn stuck in the zipper teeth. It also means some of the yarn is exposed to the elements where it can get dirty or snag on something.

    Your background today, is very similar to where I live! Ireland and Newfoundland were once connected by more than our population I believe! These tips are mostly not for me either! Thanks for being you! I've always wound my yarn into centre pull balls...then you just need to keep the cats away...I usually put my working yarn (and my bigger projects) in a plastic or fabric shopping bag while I work...for one piece afghans doing this with my arms through the bag handles, takes the weight off my arthritic wrists and hands.

    The only tip I use is the back and forth weave because I use acrylic most of the time. I love natural fibers but most of my projects are donated or gifted and it’s too expensive for me to use natural fibers. I have been crocheting a long time so I use what works for me. I really enjoy your videos and hope you will continue making them. Thanks for sharing.

    Hi, Tula. Brilliant video as always. I have tried the three direction ending method (I do use acrylic yarn quite often), but usually can’t find room for the third direction without leaving a bump. So I do two with inserting the needle through the yarn fibers. What do you think of that tip?

    I'm totally OCD with my ends. I split the yarn and weave each end in 2-3 different directions. And on top of that, I split each of those ends into even finer strands in order to make a double knot: by this time each stand is so thin that the knot becomes totally invisible among the full thickness yarn. Then I can cut the ends really close, so that no ends will ever poke through. 😅

    Yes, I often insert through the fibers. For that reason I said on an earlier video that one of the things I don't use (or use rarely) is a blunt tapestry needle because I want the needle to easily split the fibers.

    Thank you for another enjoyable video. I do know some people who use the tennis ball on their hook because of hand pain. But, even with 2 types of severe arthritis in my hands, it doesn't do a single positive thing for me: I just take more frequent breaks. I do have several yarn bowls but I NEVER work with my yarn through the holes. I take some of my projects with me and I'm certainly not going to take a yarn bowl with me! Russian join? Tried it a couple of times: too much work! If I were convinced it wouldn't come undone, I'd put in the extra effort but I'm not convinced. Looking forward to your next video! xx😊

    I also wrap the yarn twice, not because of tension (though it probably helps me as well) but because this brings the yarn in the optimal position for my hook to grab. The disadvantage is that sometimes the yarn cuts into my finger, especially when I crochet with harder cotton (for washcloths and towels) or very thin thread for doilies. I'm making a potholder right now and you can see the ridge... That's why I sometimes wrap a band aid around my index finger. As to the balls jumping around, I prefer center pull skeins, but they have the disadvantage of collapsing when almost finished, especially the bigger ones, and the yarn tangles. I don't have a problem even when pulling from outside the ball when I crochet at home, since I'm on the sofa and have lots of space next to me, but when I take my projects on my 1-hour bus commute to work, I use Ziploc plactic bags, leaving only a tiny opening. They help to confine a jumping ball, and also help a lot with a collapsed center pull skein, the yarn just stays put.

  • @Value1lady

    @Value1lady

    @@barborahedbavna8170 yes it hurts my finger sometimes too with it wrapped twice but it’s my go to. I can hold my yarn in other ways as well but when the yarn is slippery it only works with the wrap around my index finger and not the other ways.

    The smaller blue balls for squash / handball are better than tennis balls. You can put the holes off center to adapt for whatever physical therapy your hand needs to stretch muscles that get tired and tendons that need help. It can take stress off the upper arm elbows and shoulder joints. Other than that I don't need any other accoutrements for knitting or crocheting - I use cut off pieces of yarn for stitch markers. I'm a penny pincher who can make Abe Lincoln scream bloody murder. I don't like to spend more than one penny per yard for yarn, whether it's acrylic or animal fiber, So I am not buying much else Other than my sticks to do tricks with. I even DIY cable crochet and cable knitting needles out of orangewood manicure sticks, all purpose glue, and grass trimmer line.

    I have noticed that the majority of crocheters complaining about elbow pain are knife holders and none of pencil grip holders complain about shoulder pain, because you crochet the same way your write: only the wrist moves. The shoulders and elbows are dropped resting next to the body. But wrists can get sore after several hours of writing and from crochet, too, especially working with a thick, heavy yarn. That means more frequent tea breaks and trips to toilet.
