That's what I've just said. I'm only about six years older than David Mitchell, and I remember Standard Fireworks really well. Growing up in the 1970s, a lot of people bought them for bonfire parties in the back garden. And Sarah Millican likewise is close in age to David, and she didn't seem to know them either. (Lee Mack is the same age as me, but maybe he was staying quiet, since he's on Bob's team.) I mean they'd be everywhere in the shops in November.

Of course it's true. I used to buy 'Standard' fireworks when I was young just as we were allowed to buy cigarettes for my parents. And we used to play with sparklers in the kitchen, especially if it was terrible weather outside, because that's where all the water was just in case. If truth be known there were others on that panel who knew that there was such a thing as 'Standard' fireworks but that wouldn't have been anywhere near as funny as it was with Bob explaining it all. 😎

The show's producers obviously let Bob get away with a lot of truth-bending. The basic incident might be true but many many embellishments are pure fantasy. He's such an hilarious charmer and a sweetheart that everybody lets it go. The scores are all BS anyway. Bob and David are never on the same team, I'd say because it's such fun watching them go head to head - I bet David loves every minute of it.

Can they put Bob on David's team for a change. I want to see David smugly watch Lee try and figure out if the abject nonsense is true or not. Poor David is going crazy after all these tall tales.
