there is no mod that can drastically change your driving more than a set of A/T or M/T tires. absolutely worth the money

Good points. Every time you modify some parts you have always to modify other parts, so everything must be planned carefully. Especially when you over modify your daily driver you will end upp giving upp comfort, driving economy or else...

Good video and good points. I’ve hired Prados overseas and gone off road and never needed anything more than the stock standard hire vehicle. The only thing I would have liked was more power for overtaking at highway speeds but that was with the older 130Kw engines not the new 150Kw.

True. Some of the engine options weren’t great. The new ones are fantastic. If it’s good enough for the hilux, it’s good enough for me 👍

on our new prado we got genuine rubber floor mats supplied, which saved us buying some, --great! good points about not 'over doing' it. that's how we approached our van and prado builds. we find our simple DIY awning and other gear works, without the cost.

100% agree. I have the stock floor mats and there are a lot of cheap and good quality parts out there if people look. Problem is, we buy stuff we don’t need and we are no better off then when we started modifying and spending. Hopefully this helps some people

Nice work mate! They are great vehicles!!

The bullbar's saved our 150 a number of times with roos and deer, and our halogen spotties really are a big safety feature on bush roads. The OE Dunlop Grand Treks are quiet and economical and even with 70k on them dealt well with really rough outback tracks. We replaced them with Geolanders and fuel consumption is up over 10%, but better dirt road grip. It really does depend on your vehicle use as to what you change, but our set up gives us more flexible use of the Prado. Horses for courses.

Good points. Don't necessarily agree about the tyres, as conditions may require a better tyre depending where you are going. I made my own camper bed for my Prado, cost me very little and have tons of storage underneath. I will make or buy some storage draws to go underneath so will not cost much either. The lights on these new Prado's are excellent so no need to upgrade them like you said. A winch and snorkel are very useful items that can be of real help if you are going hardcore off road.

Depends on what you are doing. I have tackled Australia’s hardest tracks with stock tyres. Know your pressures and have simple recovery gear like maxtrax. Better than spending $3000 on tyres when I have new tyres for free with the vehicle. Each to their own and everyone has different needs

Regarding the tires I disagree with you. I made 70k kilometres with a stock tires and it became bold because of off road. Also its main disadvantage is that you can’t put a low pressure on it because you can easily damage it especially when you drive on stones or gravel. I switched to BF KO2 and it seems a very good setup for me.

A bull bar, winch and snorkel should be in your top 5 things to do FIRST! A bull bar offers you protection, better approach angle and somewhere to house your winch. A winch is one of the best mods for self recovery for those who explore alone and can also aid in recovering someone else if needed. A snorkel not only allows cleaner air to your engine, improving longevity, but also allows you to do river crossing more safely. These are the first 3 things I do to any of the 4wd’s I own. Tyres I agree with, lights I agree with and rear draws I agree with. But I’m not convinced on the others

Big dollars there Tristan! I think it depends on the needs. I have owned a truck with and without your mods mentioned and there is almost always a way around them. As an example, travelling with someone who has a winch instead of buying one yourself. The recent information I am pushing to people is that most don’t need all the mods and they can go bush without them. See my Prado test video for evidence haha. I’m trying to strike a balance between dropping $15,000 on mods and spending money on travel. I would love a bullbar, winch etc and there is no denying they have their place but to say the first 5 things people should do is to spend big $$$ before getting to know their vehicle is a mistake that is too often repeated. If you have the money and aren’t interested in testing and comparing stock vs after market, then by all means drop the cash at ARB. I’m trying to take my time and provide a different approach to the hobby. Thank you for your comment Tristan. I look forward to your thoughts on future videos 👍

@@NorthOz we have a 120 series prado, it came with decent tyres from the previous owner, so they can stay. Safari snorkel was $450, Ironman winch compatible bull bar was $2400 and the runva winch was $900. I installed these all myself saving more money. I get not everyone is comfortable doing this. But it’s worth learning the skills to help you in the long run. I also don’t agree with “learning your vehicle in stock form” if you are only going to upgrade everything and have to “learn” everything again. But I also love a good debate, so keep them coming ✌️

You’re going places where you need a winch but are doing it on highway tyres? Get better tyres and you’ll not need the winch so often.

Really comes down to what you're doing with the car. If you're going off-road at all, you minimum need AT tyres. Even for 2WD accessible camp tracks with gradient. The Prado's tie-down points are some of the best put together for recovery and will definitely do the job, but for 100 dollars and 30 minute fitment a set of sacrificial ones is not something "NOT TO DO". If you have to get snatched out of sand (i.e. if you ever drive on sand) you will wish you had them. If you're putting in a lot of regional kilometres, especially at night, you want a bullbar and either well taken care of headlights or a light bar/spotties. To me this is closer to a list of mods that you should do. Drawers is an unnecessary rabbit hole of expense but specifically the Prado and FJ platform almost necessitates this once you have more than two people in the car. I'll have to have a squiz and see how you've gone after a year. Nice to see excitement from a prado owner though, subbed.

Great Video :) I believe it all depends what you are planing to do. Standard AT/HT tires don’t last long once you start off-roading. Sure you can push through and get lucky few times but it increases the risk factor. For lights, yes Factory HIDs are great however, most pre 2017 GXL/GX have halogens and halogens are not great on-road, let alone off road. If any night driving is on cards - headlight upgrade - more lights are a must.

All good points. I’ll run these tyres into the ground. I don’t want to spend the $2000 if I can avoid it haha. With the lights, a bulb upgrade is helpful and a cheap light bar does the trick 👍

I disagree with the tyres. If the cars for school runs and winery gravel car parks then yes, it’s fine. They’re even good on sand. If you’re doing any length of unsealed driving buy a set of proper 10 ply ATs. You will absolutely get a puncture and lose half a day of your trip. So you if have a trip planned sell those Highway terrains to someone who will use them before you puts miles and depreciate them.

I see your point and thank you for the comment. I have done extended trips on corrugations without issues. I abused them for over 15,000 kms and no issues. Not even a flat. I aired them down to 10 psi on sand and they still performed. It all depends on what you are comfortable with. They are still a high quality and performing offroad tyre and I would absolutely run them again 👍

Those factory tie down points are not to be relied upon at all. Yes, as a last resort, with training and measures in place to minimise risk, they can be used. But not recommended at all. (Qualified Trainer) fby4 would be well advised delete that video. They do break. Seen it.

Bullbar does give you more front clearance and better approach angle

Totally agree to test your 4WD to your own conditions as factory spec first. I hate b/bars as wreck suspension, all you say is right about tyre pressure, lights and recovery points. Insurance too. AAMI and Aliance do NOT view a b/bar as protection, just another thing to repair so the premium is extra $125+ if b/bar fitted. I like how you think it thru first

4wd Supercentre 40” slimline light bar cost me $120, 4 years on my 120 Prado and it looks new, no fading, no water in it and it’s bright as, blows my mind spending $400 on a ‘brand’, can always scrub the brand name off if you want 😂

6:00 al alternative to building drawers is waiting for a 2nd hand one from the marketplace. Could easily cheaper than buying materials from bunnings. I bought mine used for $200 but have seen them as low as $100 when ppl want to get rid of them. Warning they are heavy

Good point. Second hand parts are the way to go 👍 People always selling them for 10% what they paid for them. Just need to be patient for your make and model. They are very heavy indeed

My Driving Lights while good are the least used accessory I use + you need a Bar of some kind to mount them on

I felt the same way about old truck. They looked cool but often the headlights were enough

The factory “recovery points” on cars are designed as tie-down points for transport purposes and are not rated for recoveries. I wouldn’t trust them myself.

I bought a 2nd hand gu patrol 15 years ago that already had a bull bar. I have since added accessories but only a few at a time, so after 15 years of ownership you end up with an off road weapon

Second hand vehicles are the way to go if you don’t want to spend the money on parts yourself. Unfortunately I found I was spending more money fixing my navara (with all the equipment on it) than what is was worth

@@NorthOz the way I look at it, you do your due diligence, get a lot of accessories with it, save yourself thousands, I do most repairs myself and last of all you save thousands on depreciation (the hidden cost no one thinks about) I’ve had my GU now for 20 years, it is now 33 years old, most people would have owned 3 cars in that time It’s basic maths. Unfortunately the itch cycle for new cars is 3 years an urge I have learnt to resist

Really valuable tips you are sharing.. I saw your video about Bull bar which you dont recommend , but I want to know from you about nudge bar genuine one for toyota prado? What do you think about it please share your thought. Thanks Ketan

Very kind words thanks you. The nudge bar would be fine as long you know why you want it. For impact protection, I wouldn’t bother. For putting a light bar on it or a uhf antenna (if there is a mount for it) it would be fine. Just depends. Personally, I’d just keep it the way it is 👍 Thank you for commenting and subscribing

Hi mate do you know if your prado has tyre pressure monitor system? I cannot find any info about it my dad old prado has it though but I cant see it anywhere on my 2021

I don’t believe Toyota offer this and if they do it would be either an optional extra or on their top of the range model. The gxl doesn’t come stock with it. I hope this helps. Thanks for commenting and subscribing 👍

With all the bars on it, that’s what we pay here. Might be regional prices but ARB charge like a wounded bull and competing bars aren’t far off it these days

@@NorthOz you get what you pay for. ARB sell top quality tried and tested equipment. Others do also, but they are arguably the best. Any decent off roading in these vehicles and you should start with a bullbar, rated recovery points and recovery gear, winch, snorkel and some decent all terrain tyres. Then go from there. I appreciate what you are trying to say but going out with underinflatted highway terrain tyres is going to put more wear on the engine and drivetrain, reduce fuel economy, increase the chance of the tyre coming off the bead and increase damage to tracks. You need tyres to suit the conditions you are driving on.

Hey does ur vehicle doors unlock when you turn off the ignition i am curious because i got a new prado just couple of days ego & doors doesn’t unlock when i shut the ignition off just wanted to know it is a factor setting or a defect

Congrats your new Prado 👍 Are you talking about the auto locking doors and then them not opening? I think they only open when in park. If that’s not happening, you might have an issue
