5 Mistakes New Artists Make
Graphic stock link; graphicstock.com/ChloeRoseArt_...
Every artist was a beginner at some point, and here are 5 mistakes that many artists make in regards to their learning process.
1. Not asking for help, or not getting outside help when trying to self teach.
2. Not connecting/networking with other artists and expecting to build a following easily and quickly without working for it.
3. Not understanding copyright
4. Not using references (I always get asked "should I use a reference in my work?")
5. Getting overwhelmed and trying to master everything all at once (you cannot learn everything all at once and know how to use oils, acrylics, watercolors, digital art, perfect proportions, character design, etc. all at once, learning is a curve)

Fun tip: wear white or black shirts and just paint over them if u paint your shirt on accident so that it's tie dye. It might wash out though..
Here are some tips in addition about copyright 1) no human pose can be copyright. 2) no lighting scenario can be copyright 3) no colour palette can be copyright. 4) no species of real animal can be copyright. As well A) take your own references whenever possible digital camera and selfies. Great for overall pose. Lighting and facial expression. B) do not be a slave to the reference! Change it up and use multiple references. C) use multiple references and change the pose as desired. D) think about the thing you are drawing as a 3D object E) Also draw from life F) you can take reference of animals at zoos, pet stores, etc. Ask friends and family for permission and help by getting them to pose or take photos of there pets (and draw from life).G) do roughs and thumbnails before even looking for reference, get reference to adapt to your needs don't adapt as much to the reference. H) changing a pose reference into your own character and changing all the colors is fine; as a pose can NOT be copyright. Any doubt just take your own ref in similar light and same pose. Places like graphic stock are still very useful if you are copying more directly from the reference rather than using it as one of many references. And if you want to copy it very closely or do photo manipulations. And huge tip: Search google: Public domain images --------------! Be aware of copyright but not full of fear. Make art and have fun!

Thanks, I know I'm late but I'm really bad at drawing hands and I will try now!
For most of middle school and freshman year, I had this friend who absolutely refused to draw references because she wanted to be a professional artist and thought that using references wasn't something they do. It took her two years to realize she was wrong and I still tease her about this.
Wow, I had no idea you were supposed to stretch water color paper... I feel like a new person 😂 I've recently been delving into watercolor and I've been enjoying it very much... but that warped paper has made me lose my mind 😂 thank you so much for saving my life Chloe

You dont have to. There is only 3 things you have to do in life, rest is optional. I been using water colors for a long time now, and i know about stretching thing and i just dont do it. Doesnt bother me if paper bends a litle. And after a while you learn how much water to use so its not even an issue, it only happens if you water it alot.
Thanks for this video! I can definitely relate to all of the given points (and I am even guilty of most of these in my past) I think beginners just get overwhelmed as they want everything but don't know it takes years to get to such level ... If you're a few years in, stil standing strong in art and having goals to strive towards then you actually realise what wrong behavior you had in your past and that's okay. I just wish there were people who taught younger artist to have patience and willpower and it's grest artist likr you are reach for such medium! Also you're so humble 😊 you're awesome and your following is strong, don't mind that. Sometimes it's good to mention our strengths :D

It depends upon the texture or type of paint. Base, consistency, etc.
Thanks so much for this video. I have just started drawing again after many years of not drawing and have been really trying to improve my drawings. So glad you mentioned using reference photos, people (well, one specifically) have been telling me that I am " tracing" or "copying" the pictures because I am drawing from a picture. It helps me to learn more about how to draw and what I need to work on. Thank you so much for saying it is OK to use references. Bless you!
9:05 This one hit me to the core. I always feel overwhelmed by all there is to learn. WRITING THAT DOWN!!!
Omg!! This is something I really needed to see. I have been getting so overwhelmed lately, feeling that I really need to develop my own style because I'm trying to get my art out there atm and omg, it's so intense. I just need to chill the hell out. Lol. Who knew that I could get so overwhelmed and feel so new when I've been drawing for over 20 years??? So thanks so much for this. x
Chloe, you're always such a help to me as a beginning artist. I'm soon going to have my own youtube channel, and I've been following you for about half a year, and with your tips, I've gotten so much better at art! thank you!
I am especially grateful to your 5th point, Chloe. Thank you very much. I'm personally very passionate about a lot of different art forms and I often end up being less productive trying to do everything at once. This reminder was very helpful!
Every time I watch one of your videos I feel so inspired to start drawing right away. I love all of your videos, they are all so helpful.
I'm just off of work and spending feeding my artist side by watching all of your videos. I'm thinking putting my work online and had no idea where to start. Thank you!

Thank you for these. I am just starting out and these, as well as your other advice is helping me immensely.
Your such an inspiring person and quite an encouraging artist too! I enjoy watching your videos and you are giving very good advice, I have spent many years as a working artist and the social media revolution has changed how people come to art and art as a vocation. I commend you on your perseverance and I am glad for your success! Keep Striving and never give up! The best and only advice that applies to everyone!
Hello Chloe, I just found your channel tonight & I can't stop watching. Im a newer, self taught artist myself, so thank you so much .I really enjoy watching your videos 😍❤
Painting or using oils are so much fun, and Messy! I have been using oil pastels this past year and am discovering that I really appreciate how the different colors can be used and blended for lights and shadows. Sometimes it is hard to have some control of the oils for blending purposes, but that has been my experience so far. Thanks for the awesome videos on art it has always been a passion for me to create art and still have the ability to grow and learn more through your work and inspiration and shared experiences. I have been new to your channel and have learned quite a lot!
thanks alot for the info ... (and i felt relief when it comes to try almost every type of art.. i mean i started with watercolours, then clay ahaha then acrylics, sketching, markers and now i am looking for cheap pastel supplies!) i have been watching your videos and i am learning alot.
This really helps. I'm a new artist and while I learned basic stuff in high school, college and learned a bit from my dad. I'm still very new. And the internet has so many resources to learn. And I have learned so much so far and am still learning.
Thankyou so much for this incredible ❤ tips for new beginners .I really needed, hoping to see more videos like this !
This is so helpful! I’ve just started painting at home, and I needed these tips.
Most of these were totally relevant to my current progress, especially trying to learn everything at once and feeling weird about using references. For almost a decade, I was only really drawing every 3 months or so and had no consistency. I learned in short bursts and while I could make great headway in that time, I always fell off again so I wasn't continuing to improve. This was largely due to ongoing depression. Now that my mental health has improved, I'm also trying to stay consistent with art. It can definitely be frustrating at times because at my age, I feel like I should be leagues ahead in skill level. I'm just trying to pace myself and keep these things in mind. This was a great reminder!
awesome video! Oil paints are amazing I can't wait to see what you make with oils!!!
I love your channel! And References are huge! Even professional artists, animators and illustrators use them. Reference doesn't always mean copying the exact image. When I'm working on a piece from my head I'll look up reference and fill up a few pages in my sketchbook to see how the anatomy works, then I'll work on my piece. I just did a piece with birds and it definitely helped to know how wings work, but once you know how they work, you won't always need to copy from the exact reference. 😊
i'm a new artist and you are spot on. Also dont forget about "just keep practising!" it doesnt matter if a picture is a bit rubbish you will get better. And the mistakes are where you remmeber to not do that again (mostly lol)
Lol! Your journey has been very much like mine. And, I started creating my own characters this year. I keep a little illustrated journal to keep track of all my ideas and I SO appreciate that you and so many others are willing to host channels to help people like me. I live in a very rural area so my contact with others is limited. Great video!
I love you Chloe .... this video was so helpful please make more videos💕

Loooove the profile pic lol
This is the first video of yours that I´ve watched and I really enjoyed it. I would probably be in that first category, I mostly draw fan art and it´s just for fun but the past year I have tried to get my technical skills up and really have tried to make a concious effort to improve. I also really agree about connecting with other artists, I had a deviantart account in high school but I´s probably only after starting an instagram account this year that I´ve been working on the social part of social media and it´s alot of fun even though it has taken a bit of time. I find that talking to people and getting feedback from people who are at about my level is more fun to me than following the huge names and it´s nice to be apart of the community in another way. Also am in the same boat with trying new mediums, it can feel a bit disheartening when I try something new and I feel like I almost start at the bottom step but I guess that´s how it is when trying new things so I just try to enjoy the process instead of stressing about it.
You're an incredible artist Chloe but these videos highlight how much of an incredibly wonderful person you are too. Brilliant advice. I personally cannot draw without seeing a photo. I can't layer and shade and so on without a reference...so a cheat I will continue to be 😂 I find oils really hard. But I gave up really quickly, I'm sure you'll be amazing! ❤️
@ChloeRoseArt
7 жыл бұрын
that's not a cheat at all though! Some people (like myself) prefer to draw from a photo, some people prefer to draw characters from memory. I still prefer to draw from a photograph of one of my favorite shows as opposed to making my own character, doesnt make you less of an artist for it, just means that we all have different styles in regards to what we like to draw! Thank you for the lovely comment Lily, it means a lot ❤️
Thank you you have helped me so much I am a lot more confident as a beginner now 😊
i started using watercolours around the same time as you and i have to say im completely obsessed with them now and i love that i can whip up a piece of art in half an hour rather than spending hours on an acrylic painting, although i do still love my acrylics
Thanks so much for this info, I'm 10 and I love drawing and I saw in another video that to get the right colours for painting and they have to be exact then try adding different paints together and paint them on the reference picture until you get the right shade which I think is also very helpful, I think that drawing is the best way to express creativity so I will subscribe and continue to watch your videos :)
I just wanna say love your eyes they are so beautiful
Thank you Chloe for this! So true is #5. Being an artist and running a business where you have a gazillion hats to wear is very overwhelming. You feel you need to know everything, but know nothing. Like you said, you learn at your pace, and you'll get there eventually. It's just hard not to be impatient some day. And I use references for EVERYTHING! Like you said, if you don't have a cat or dog or whatever, how do you draw it? Thank you for all you do Chloe, always look forward to watching your videos!
Thank you for the watercolor paper tip!
Congratulations on 70k subscribers Chloe
I just realised you're makeup is flawless👌🏽
Thanks! Will surely use graphicstock 😊
Most of the time these videos are repetitive and are like the most obvious tips or whatever, but this was actually helpful!! Thanks and great job on the video :)
I get what you say about references but at a certain point it is necessary to distance yourself from them if you want to progress in drawing. When I was younger, I used to use a lot of references to draw, and that is completely normal. But learning to draw without reference is a totally different challenge. When using references, we tend to learn more how to "copy" things than actual proportions. It's like we learn how each body part looks, but without knowing how they all connect and interact with each other. Artists who have used lots and lots of references for a long time will have trouble getting started on a drawing, and finding the general shape of it. That's why I think that it is very important to start learning anatomy and proportions and to experimenting with them without always copying a reference fairly early, so that it gets easier down the line.
@ChloeRoseArt
7 жыл бұрын
and this is what I was saying in the video in regards to wanting to learn something outside of just "drawing characters for fun" for me I spent years perfecting drawing from a reference because all I wanted to do was to draw people and characters I liked, I never had the desire to make anything original or outside of that because I drew when I felt like it, not for any particular reason. And that's okay too, perhaps there are people out there like me who just want to learn how to draw people from movies that they love, there is no need for anybody to feel they have to do anything outside of that if what they are doing is just for fun. I know a lot of successful artists who make a living just drawing licensed work - Alice XZ is an incredible artist who draws and sells art from movies and shows, characters, etc. She just puts a cool colorful spin on her work so it isnt an exact copy of the reference picture/photo she is drawing from. That's why since starting youtube i've wanted to develop that further into making more original stuff, hence why I've been buying books and practicing more without them :) but references are definitely vital, you can still earn the way body parts are shaped if you study them as you are drawing them, they taught me how to see light and shadows, how to blend, how things are shaped, etc. But now i'm at a point where I want to learn the core of it to get a better understanding, hence the book :)

You're so right! I have a feeling after a few years of me drawing photos I like for fun, I have a feeling that my brain fails to see that the people in the photos can move around and change their shape! For this reason, it's kinda difficult to advance in the point im at, and I don't even know where to begin for anatomy.. 😅

HeyHeyHeyyy Photos have their uses, but I agree it is much better to draw from your own sketches or imagination. I paint abstract figures and they are all imaginary with no reference. The camera tends to "flattern" the subject, you can't beat going to a life drawing class if you want to learn draw figures.

Wow I didn't know about the graphic stock. Thank you!
Hey! So I know this video is several years old but it has been extremely helpful. I started getting into art several years ago. As a newbie artist (I still consider myself that since I don't practice everyday) this was a very enlightening and encouraging. Thank you. Also... I mainly use watercolors and... I had no idea you had to stretch the paper!! 😂 All these years of frustration and come to find out... I was doing it wrong! 😂😂😂 Go fig. Thank you again! I love your videos!
Really helpful and honest advice! Thank you so much!
I'm not really a new artist but I still struggle with a lot of these so thank you for the video! 😄❤
Thank you so much! 💙 this helped me a lot
I am a new subscriber and a kinda new artist. I fell in love with your channel❤️. Love you. :)
Loved the video! You are amazing!
Omg I had no idea about watercolor paper… Life makes sense now!
oh my god this helped and reassured so much thank you!
i love your voice, ugh
I sometimes draw without a reference. Which is what I thought XD I actually tried to draw characters from books that I was writing and so on, so forth. This is also so true, I believe that the world should have a look at this sweet knowledge!
Now you have more subscriber s then Cyrarin. OML Chloe you are blowing up keep up the great work😄
Yay Chloe rose is back
#6 thinking you have to go out and buy the most expencive art materials in order to make great art.... Ummmm... No... Any paper, any pencil, any paint, that's all you need to start with Great video, Chloe! 💖
Thank you so much for this video! Even though I've "drawn" for years...I feel like a beginner because this is the first time I've taken it more seriously, and this video really helped! I had no idea you were supposed to "stretch" watercolor paper?! I need to figure that out, cuz I usually just rely on a heavy book to weigh down the warped paper lol.
Number five, I am in that kind of a mindset. I've been practicing pencil sketch for so long that I don't have a clue about how paints work. (And by the way, thanks for the headstart, saying you're supposed to stretch water colour paper XD) I really wanna get better at painting but I can't seem to find the spirit. I sorta gross out by looking at a painting and then get back to pencils just to feed my confidence, and then the cycle repeats.
I sawed this video for the first time and you said each and every word correct so without waiting I pressed that subscribe button and even I'm an painter too I'm 13 and chloe you are so good at it, I sawed the 6 hacks of painting you did the portrait and I was like omg so perfect Well I know only to do nature and cartoon paintings So... good luck for the next video's
I remember that when friends of my really wanted to draw they started to use drawings as a reference and this may sounds weird but you dont learn to draw because you scribble over the lines and a drawing with a foto as reference you have to learn it your own and think how you are gonna but your “style and foto” in one drawing on paper But still when im in art class and we get our free time .. i see people looking up “dog drawing” or “eye drawing”
You make great points. especially with the art community point. Great video :) look forward to the next (im a lurker and I am taking your second point on board :)
Omg Chloe this is so relatable! As an artist who focuses on realism, I get told all the time that using a reference photo is cheating. I had no idea you are supposed to stretch watercolor paper and you're not supposed to use graphite under Copics until you said it in this video! lol
Im no master of any kind of medium but focusing on digital alone really helped me learn some skills that improved my art as a whole. In high school my art classes were all over the place. And the idea was just "Play with this" we werent really taught the finer points of anything... In 5 years I had one week of color wheel and highlight verse shadow training.. The rest of that time was us poking clay, playing with paint, carving soap.. You get the idea. There was a new medium every week if one lasted that long and the classes werent even an hour long. I went home and played in photoshop for hours daily. So my digital stuff improved where traditional failed. After years of that I graduated and didnt touch traditional stuff while I improved with digital... During that time I taught myself with trail and error, tutorials, art books, and watching speed paints. My skill improved and reflected. So if you dont think focusing on one type of art can help you improve in others, I am living proof. I did that whole "new medium a week" jazz and ended up hating all of them.
Even tracing isn't bad! It's good for practice, but it is good to practice from reference too.
Loved this video!!
Tom Bancrofts book on creating characters with personality (something like that) it's a great book that helped me and is definitely worth a look Chloe
Found this very refreshing!

Ahhh I love your channel❤️
Hi petal. The last mistake u have listed is exactly what I am doing. I am trying to do acrylic, oils and marbling. Lol. Any other tips.
I loved the intro 💖💖💖
Please please please go over just HOW to "start" a new paintbrush... So many ppl just crush out the stuff that keeps the shape... I learned that you should never do that! Especially if it is real hair (Kolinsky fx) .. Art teacher said to hold a new brush in the water, not touch the bottom of the glass (bending the brush). Swosh it around, and when it gets soft, you can gently bend against the bottom of the glass/jar/whatyouhavewaterin. Always let them dry brush down. Or horizontally. To keep the point, treat it with some brush soap to condition it. Let dry with soap. Thank you for all the tips and great vidz. You always inspire me! Hug from Norway, Katla Dragon
Love watching your video
when you google images, you can change the setting so you gt only pictures that are royalty free and ok to be used further..
6:32 I often use references to start but in the end my style always comes out and creates new things
I'm in a dilemma, because I do use references, and I always learn something new when I do, but I'm afraid to use them a lot because I'm scared that I will become dependent on them and not be able to draw straight from my imagination. Any suggestions?

Lily Maybe you should draw from references for something new you’re drawing and what you can draw from imagination, do
this was really helpfffulll thank you soo muchh
Same I showed myself how to draw. And I used a lot of reference and like to draw characters. But I am able to make my own characters and draw things without reference sometimes.
What is the name of the book?
Oil paints are my favorite especially if you love blending they take time to dry so you have so much play time it's really fun. I don't know too much I just watch bob Ross and his technique on using a wet base of white paint is soooo helpful if you start with oil you should follow along one of his videos so you atleast get a feel of how the paints work. Oooo sorry this is a long comment but at think at Michaels art supply there is a starting kit of oil paints that I got that has 2 oil paint brushes (you'll learn to love the hairs of those brushes. Way easier to clean) you get I think 8 paints and liquin it's Winsor and newton. I swear the pigment is beyond good. I got a good deal on them too the original price was 80 but I got it for 40. I highly suggest oil paints

QUICK NOTE ABOUT COPYRIGHT: YOU CAN DRAW FANART AND SELL IT. YOU ARE PROTECTED BY COPYRIGHT LAWS. The most important thing to keep in mind is to consider whether your artwork is *transformative* For example, if you redraw a screen cap or trace promotional images that would not be protected under copyright; but if you come up with your own pose and interpret the characters in your own way (i.e. transform it) you can use the work for commercial purposes. (but even then, the screen cap thing is debatable) COMMERCIAL USE IS NOT A DETERMINING FACTOR IN COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT CASES. THIS IS A HUGE MISCONCEPTION AND IT IS SUPER UNTRUE. THIS BEING SAID: ALWAYS READ YOUR LOCAL LAWS REGARDING COPYRIGHT. More often than not what I said holds true but if you want to be sure, reading the statutes that apply to wherever you live is a good rule of thumb. (also cases are generally very case-by-case so there is also that to keep in mind) My main message is don't be intimidated by the phrase "it's against copyright", a lot of people I know in real life say this on a regular basis and they're stupid. Nobody should listen to them. This might seem a bit shady.... no shade is being thrown at you Chloe, I love your work this is just the salty ramblings of a legal studies student

Yes you are right and it falls into a "gray area" ie a parody law, but it's a little bit complex and hard to explain in a short video when I myself still dont understand it 100%! I've sold a fanart design on a tshirt on redbubble for years, a crossover style design that, while it is obvious who the characters are, they are not from a screenshot or reference image, the characters were in my own "style" while still having elements of the original. Teefury.com is a great example of fanartists selling work. I may talk about this at a later date :)

Xemera I recently had a Kickstarter where I made charms of Pokemon as if they were sushi, or poke bowls, as part of a transformative parody. They were my own poses, and my own designs for the characters, but I got served with copyright infringement from The Pokemon Company and had to take it all down. I had a lawyer tell me I couldn't fight it either, and that fan art is largely copyright infringement unless you have a license from that company. I sell at conventions and have been told countless stories of getting an email explaining that the fan art was a violation of copyright law (usually Nintendo and Disney are the ones who go after artists the most). Fan art is a grey area and it's something that artists really need to research and prepare for before selling their work in certain markets.
that was really helpfull chloe i really want to meet u please i am a really huge fan.BTW i just bought a set of charcoal pencils so can you tell how to use them
Hi I'm new to your channel but I was wondering if you have any tips for drawing bodies and anatomy. (Including eyes, hair, noses, and mouths) Also I really love your channel and with me getting more into art your channel has really helped with the life hacks and stuff!!
*nods* great thoughts and tips...
