Spending too much time perfecting a song. Having played auxiliary percussion all my life, I am very sensitized to timing/beat issues...and that can be bad! Have to remember to let go more quickly and move on!
Thank you, Sweetwater, for not throwing stuff at Joe Gilder =D

There were LOTS of heavy, pointy things in that video studio. It could've been bad.

@@HomeStudioCorner next video that could be dope is seeing you and Mitch presenting some new presonus stuff :)
' Finish that sucker and move on ' 😂. That's totally true man!
I’m thankful for this. For one, it’s timeless advice. For two, it’s not a needlessly bloated 20 minute video. Thank you! It’s so much easier to return to this to keep perspective when it’s quick!
I love that the late, great Mr. Bruce Swedien got a shout out.
Thanks for this video, Joe and Sweetwater. What I love about it -- besides the excellent, succinct advice -- is that you're NOT hawking any specific pieces of gear or software here, just focusing on what people DO with it. Again, thank you!
Sweetwater is my store for everything I need, I basically built my entire home studio with the help of sales engineer Colton Kreuzer. I got the best possible gear on my budget with Colton's advice on every single step on the process. I thank Colton and Sweetwater for the outstanding service, price and product support. Two thumbs up!
Sweetwater and Joe Gilder… two of my favorites! Forget Avengers Endgame, THIS is the most epic crossover of all time.
Joe Gilder is a national treasure!
the Acme Chisel 3000 is a beast 🤣
Couldn't have picked 5 better tips myself. These are the things every new engineer needs to hear for sure!
Thanks Joe. Brilliant advice that cannot be overstated. The most important element/tool in your studio is YOU.

Brilliant advice? "YOU are the most important element in your studio, it's not about the gear". And "When you're ready for more gear, contact your Sweetwater rep". Genius.
Love how he mentioned Finneas, such a talented guy
Joe guilder ......I am ur Fan 🙌. Really admire ur work.
Awesome to see Joe Gilder on here, Sweetwater. I vote more Joe. He's great!
Guilty of all five counts back when I was starting! Great vid!
Nice! Sweetwater finally understanding that the truth is better even if you don't buy their stuff. I remember when they used to filter out their bad reviews. Keep it real sweetwater!
Loved the Michalangelo analogy. lmao
Soo happy to see Joe here
Joe's voice sounds amazing in this video. I'm convinced that the second he leaves that room, he sounds exactly like "the nanny"
5 simple mistakes we all have made........the hard part is trying to NOT make them on a consistent basis.....easier said than done sometimes.....great video
Perspective - production prerequisite 👍
Love this guy lol says it how it is! Ive learned so much from watching all of his videos ! One day I hope to mix with him. Im sure my spotify tracks would sound much better with his one on one techniques. Keep doing what ur doing man! 👏 ...and thank you!
hey Joe!! I watch your tutorials a lot when beginning!
Great advice, Joe/Sweetwater...Now, if I can only learn to take it and apply it. Sweetwater is easily the greatest people in the music gear & instrument business. They have a great business culture that starts with their customer care and service that is like no other.
Nice to see Joe around here. Dude is solid.
I have seen such good before and after videos on room acoustics I've decided to gut my upstairs and work from scratch
It's been a long journey and I only recently accepted the fact about gear lust (knowing and accepting you have a problem are two different things!) now focusing on actually being good! (I'm not bad) lol Love Joe's Channel n Mitch from sweet water. Peace guys!
Sound advice, no pun intended! All that being said, I love the way the onboard digital tech in my pair of Presonus Sceptre S8s pair with their matching sub to give those of us listening to a mix together a wider listening sweet spot! I can say without question that this has been the best money I've spent yet on gear.
Loved to see joe here man. Feels like a Disney show crossover lmao🔥
Sweetwater is smart to ask Joe to add his voice to his old employer. Providence Equity Partners seems to have ideas for its growth. If Joe’s on board, that’s a good sign. Also, my sales engineer told me he’s there for life. So I’m optimistic.
I am glad he is speaking the truth and not just selling for the sake of selling.
This is so right on!..and as one of the first people who worked with Butch Vig, know that as a 19 yr old my idea was 'why should i listen to this nerd!'...should have listened!
Some great advices there! 👍
Thanks again Joe
As a guy in a creative rut who has been spending more money at Sweetwater that i care to admit building a dream home studio i needed this video.
Wow. Every single point mentioned is incredibly accurate. And Joe is simply a natural at elaborating on these in the clearest way possible 👌 Excellent content!
Wow! Awesome to see you here, Joe!! Huge fan of your channel! 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Fantastic advice. Thank you, Sweetwater; You guys seriously are the best! 🙏
thank you for the great information Joe always love the info you share thank you for doing this
Awesome Tips😎⚡🤘💚
Good advice but just as an fyi of being a child brought up in the early nineties, I learned of Michelangelo from the ninja turtles, not from the statue of David 😂

Thanks for this advice. Much appreciated!
Love your Home Studio Corner channel! Helped sway me on a Roswell Mini K47, which we actually just used on ADR for an upcoming film!
Do you like pulse width modulation?
Some great advice. And, I’ve made ALL of these mistakes over the years!
Thanks for the tips Joe. Great video!!!
Great information!!
Great sales pitch ahah spot on though.
Good on you Joe!!
Yes, people don't know what is more important, than this other. And the truth is it all depends. Time, situation and reason
I like this guy! Good stuff.
Thank You So Much
Damn, Joe has such a great voice for Radio/Podcast/Announcer. Sweetwater radio? Sweetwater podcast? Sweetwater showroom announcer? Put some Joe on it!
Great advice
Good stuff. Thank you kindly
This felt like an intervention. Excellent advice.
Great video!
Great video and congrats on the 600k subs! Awesomeness 👏 👏 👏
Amazing advice!
Good advice
Love my presonus stuff! All good tips. (Maybe someday i’ll tackle mixing 😝)
I have to say that Ethan is awesome at customer service. Just got a guitar and of course it's amazing.
Oh man! I wish i would have been able to have been able to meet you at sweetwater Joe! It would have been great to meet the man who has helped me more than i could imagine with my mixing skills. (I use those skill predominantly live church settings) Your videos are great! Thanks Sweetwater for letting Joe give some pointers, and also not throwing stuff at him!

legit advice 🙏🙌
Sweetwater didn't throw anything at you...but I did Joe, Now my monitor is broken, thanks! Now I'll buy a new monitor from sweetwater 🤕😂👍
go w/the handlebar mustache, joe!
Love et guy Joe and Sweetwater💯🙌🏽. Jus got a package in the mail from sweetwater last week 😎. That bag of candy, came in handy, as strange clouds began to hover above me in my studio 🥴.. Cnt wait to record, mix, and release this to the public!! Thanks you guys, Joe and Sweetwater🙏🏼🙌🏼. P.S - (I'm only waiting to record it, because I'm ordering a new mic pre from you guys next week. Need some of that tube saturation 💪🏼😎. The pre-amps in my Zen go are jus a bit too clean for my personal taste 😂😂🤷🏽♂️. But i love my Zen go for its functionality 😍. But I will began to recordthrougha dedicated preamp, and not the pre-amps in my interface (At least for vocals anyway).
Joe is Great…. Thanks
Very nicely communicated! I know this is only a list of five, but somewhere out there - there must be a number six that someone has either made and not confessed to or is about to make. I would like to offer a suggestion that might help if mistake number six turns out to be erasing a track(s) because after listening to it for 16 hours . . . a day . . . it sounds crummier and crummier. Let it sit for a few days (or more) then come back and see if it fits in a different place in the mix. This is not just something I've read, but something I've applied with very satisfying results. On to mistake seven: Leaving replies that are much too lengthy. Thanks for the good information.
This is right on. My biggest mistake? Overthinking rather than just jumping in and screwing around to come up with something. Watch Paul McCartney bring the song Get Back to life in the Get Back documentary by messing around.
Hey, Joe!
Short, sweet, and to the point. That it is a just a few minutes adds to its heft. I am guilty of 1, 2, and 5. Spend way too much time on something that just isn't that good instead of moving on.... tl'dr I polish a lot of turds...
I’ve more or less violated all of these suggestions and do just fine in the studio, thank you. :D Lol
now I need me an Acme Chisel 3000! ;)
Mistake #1 not setting your speakers stereo 😂 I legit mixed in mono for months without knowing why things were getting quieter when panned
Is Joe part of Sweetwater now? Sweet, indeed!
But if he did not have the right tools he wouldn't have been able to sculpt that masterpiece my friend
I learn all this the hard way. Im an amateur musician even though i been playing for 20 years. But lately i got tired of working with irresponsible people. So now i produce, record, mix, record video, edit video. I play all the instruments and record myself. Sometimes i take like a whole year for a song. So to anyone out there that gets frustrated. Dont. Practice will eventually make it better. And dont forget the 10,000 rule
For a couple seconds, just seeing the video icon, I thought Nick from Sonic State had been hired by Sweetwater
This was great -- honest and to the point, no fluff! Seriously though, where can I buy that shirt? I love a good western-style shirt.

I thought I was a good guitar player until I recorded myself. Then I thought mixing and producing a song wasn't too difficult. I turned off my computer, put my guitar away, and cried myself to sleep.
This is not the chaotic energy of Joe I was expecting

Hey Joe, I want the StudioLive 64 to also be able to fully use Luna's API Vision Console Emulation. Now that Fender owns Presonus, I hope they will upgrade this unit to be able to fully integrate via Mackie Control. I own and use Studio One, but being that the API Vision Console Emulation is not open, I want that add-on ability. Maybe, Fender could buy UAD and integrate it all so we can have the full library of applications via the StudioLive 64.
I figured this would be some shameless PreSonus plug, but I was wrong. These were all awesome tips that I personally needed to hear because I fall into more than one of these traps.
I finally know the role of the producer! 😅
I clicked the video thinking, what will they try to sell me? but it actually IS just advice.
Joe!
Who else clicked this because they thought it was Nick Batt in the thumbnail? Good video, regardless :)
Does Sweetwater carry any acoustic panels? Why not make your in-house panels
Just shelved my plans to buy an ACME Chisel 3000.
That’s what she said.
Taking a page out of the Rhett Shull book of Youtubing, are we?
When you're ready to ignore Rule #2, give us a call at Sweetwater. 😉 kidding kidding. Good advice
👏👏👏
The most confusing part to me is the shirt pattern(s).
👍👍
I ONLY HAVE ONE HAT !!! THE BOSS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
