    It's Friday night, I'm sat in front of my tent in a quiet dark spot not far from home. Keep meaning to prepare a meal while out but I end up bringing a tub of tater hash from home. Heat it up on the Trangia, lovely and filling. No noodle nonsense. Was watching novice wild camper looking hungry with a pot noodle and here's me feeling all warm inside full of 'ash, and I thought of you. Your videos helped lead me away from the pot noodle/dehydrated stuff. Why do they do that when a tasty filling meal can be had. Hope your all good there. I finally got all my backpacking gear together just as the nights drew in, but it really isn't cold, and a dry evening so I'm making the most while I can!

    It’s so nice to hear from you! I’m pleased I helped in some way towards your enjoyment of food in the outdoors. I had big plans to spend some time out and make a bunch of fresh videos and enjoy the night. But work called me away so if you don’t mind, I’ll vicariously enjoy the idea of you enjoying a night under the stars.

    One comment I’d make about fuel is that I used to be very much a “gas guy”, but found it difficult to judge how much fuel was left in each canister. So, I ended up taking a spare and sometimes using it and sometimes not. One of the things I like (just my opinion…) about alcohol stoves is that you can open the bottle and say “oh, that needs topping up” which is something that you can’t do with a gas canister (or can you? I don’t know!). I’ve been accused by my friends of being a “the answer is Trangia, what’s the question” merchant, so you’re totally right, different strokes for different folks! Looking forward to the next instalment!

    Ollie, the answer is always Trangia. Haha! And the way to find out if you have enough gas is by weighing an empty can and then using scales to see how much in weight you have. You can weight the whole stove and burn off a gram then you know how many seconds/ minutes of burn time one gram gets you (at the conditions and altitude you did the test). Jet oil sell tiny scales so you can tell how much is left. But. Faff. The answer… Trangia.

    I agree, I also use a Coleman white gas stove together with the alcohol one, YES, I’M A TRANGIA GIRL TOO! Lol, beats either canisters or a bigger tank as far as space and I’m always aware of the amount of fuel I have, plus they use less in my opinion.

    Got my Trangia this morning. Fuel is NOT easy to come by near me. And not cheap it seems! Still 2ltrs will last me a while! Made a simple windshield and boiled a full pot of water (mini set) inside 10 mins. Lovely. Will be cooking real food on it tomorrow.

    Nice little video and some great tips, very sure hit will help some newcomers but also some already advanced outdoor people. I totally have to agree with @Ollie Sheridan. However, I'm a totally alcohol stove friend, easier to judge how much is left and in the worst case it can actually burn some other fluids that are easily flammable.

    Lixada collapsible stove stand... Another KZreadr showed it but I can't find it online. Perfect for getting the Trangia off the ground and seating a pan. I'm on Anglesey now, going to try my beer can wind shield and get a night out in my tent next week! Going to order a cumulus quilt, great features, and no Chinese down. Even the certified down from China is suspect. Annual, prearranged audits are no good. No KZreadrs are addressing the grim realities of down, it's appalling. Hint hint. I very much liked your t-shirt vid as it opened me up to the t-shirt company you mentioned. I set up an account! Need to design some shirts!

    I'm homeless, I live in a fishing bivvy with my daughter and dog in the Scottish Highlands. We have 2x Coleman 533 stoves. MSR Pocket Rocket 2 which I recently won. An OEX Etna which someone binned but it was fine, jet was blocked, I sorted it. A standard Trangia and another Trangia which was army issued and holds much more fuel. A Firebox Stove (the American jobby). And a wood burner which I fitted in the fishing bivvy. Out of the liquid burning stoves I recently did a weight test before and after, heating the same quantity of water on each and seeing how many grams were used. The cheapest to run by a very very long way was the Coleman 533 at 2.5p to heat 600mls of cool water. The rest were 10p upwards each. Gas isn't cheap at all and neither is Meths even from Home Bargains at £1.79 for 500mls. The winner is of course the Firebox Stove and wood burner because you can always find fallen sticks and sometimes good sized trunks in the woods/forest for free. If it's raining outside though then the Firebox Stove is out and in the Highlands it rains an awful lot. The Coleman 533 is far from compact though but it is excellent on fuel and the heat output is brilliant. I do wish Meths was a lot cheaper as I'd use the Trangia more which I barely use. Same goes for gas, it's just too expensive for what you get from it other than its light weight and compact which for me isn't important as I'm going nowhere in my situation but I get its important to others. Out of the MSR Pocket Rocket 2 and the OEX Etna imo the Etna is the better stove. Bigger head than the MSR so the heat is spread more evenly and the pan supports are less fiddly.

    Thank you for such an insightful round up of your tests. And the Coleman 533 sounds like it performs great when compared to the rest. I’m fact it sounds hard pushed to be beaten in efficiency by most stoves.

    In the States I use Heet the yellow bottle, much cheaper than alcohol but you need plenty of ventilation because is Methanol, but as long as you’re cooking in a pot or frying pan the methanol doesn’t reach your food, just do it outside. Hope it helps. Here I buy it at Walmart in the car section.

    I’ve found that bio ethanol is a bit cheaper than meths, but it’s still more expensive I agree. I do think that it’s a case of the “tool for the job” as in a static camp I’ve got a Coleman that I run on petrol which is loads cheaper (even at the moment!). You can’t get cheaper than firewood on the woodland floor though!

    Hi Tom. So, I had an unexpected experience today with the Trangia. I took it onto the beach here on Holyhead and boiled up some water. It was quite windy, so I had my beer can windbreak wrapped around it, which worked and it boiled the water no problems. The flame was wild when I removed the pot, and I popped the snuff cap ( can't think of its name just now) on without burning my hand. But the flame wouldn't go out, it just kept going, wildly! I pushed down on it with the complEAT spoon to try and make a seal, but it wouldn't go out. I had to wait untill it burned itself out. Luckily the dog was playing in the water and noone was too close, but I was not in control of the burner at all....

    @thomaxon5481

    First off, I'm pleased you were on the beach and managed to contain the fire (not get it any worse.) You'll be 'pleased' to know that this does happen from time to time and leting it burn out is a good option. Sometimes with the snuff cap on, a hard blow will extinguish the flame. You have to be a little careful as the wind going under the wind guard will hit the side of the guard and as it deflects upwards it draws the flame (think adding oxygen to bunsen burner). So it can be useful to open the gap of the wind burner or remove it. When you're on a beach. Cover it with sand too!!

    @@thomaxon5481 hi Thom, I did remove the windbreak which had no effect. I did think about dumping sand on it 🤣, if necessary I could have done that... Letting it burn out was the best thing.
