    Thanks! There is a modeling light built in for continuous light but it's not extremely powerful. It's mainly a flash meant to fire only when you take the photo, and the modeling light is just to help visualize the light ratio before shooting or just to have some light on your subject to help with focus.

    I think it would depend on the look you're going for (really pulling the ambient lighting down a lot or letting it stay a little on the bright side) ...If that's your main purpose though I think the AD600 pro would probably be the better bet. I've actually heard from some people after this review the 600 does also come with a carry case, so it might depend on the seller. I'm not totally sure, but otherwise I don't see much benefit for the 400 for your situation specifically. Hope that helps!

    It's definitely a tricky niche that this fits into- the dual AD200 setup is very nice but I'd prefer to have the control/power of the modeling light on the AD400 as well as less parts overall to have to put together. Of course there are more small details as well but I think both setups will be great for different people, depending on what you already have and how/where you work :)

I want to equip it with large say 120 x 60cm Soft box put it very close to model's face to shoot portraits with just continuous, pleasing, soft light. I was thinking to get Aperture light 300 mkII then 120mkII but those are much over my budget. Can you recommend perhaps a model? I d like to keep it around 1m away from model face but had enough power to lite up her from a 120x60mm soft-box. Gooing through a tons of reviews but they either do not focus showing modelling light with large soft-boxes or talk mainly on flashlight.

    There are some alternatives for sure, especially if you don't care about fan noise... the Godox SL-200 or another in the SL line are pretty affordable by comparison, and the light quality isn't bad. The fan noise and lack of batter power & a carry case are the downsides. Godox did also just come out with the VL150 and VL300 which are much much better choices for video where battery power and quiet fans can be more critical. Kind of in between the Godox SL series and Aputure price wise. Hope that helps! :)

    Hi! In theory I think that should work (or at least be fairly close) but I haven't tried it so can't be 100% sure. There are other factors at play of course like using or not using the reflector (and reflector design itself), using the speedlight head or flash tube, efficiency of the bulb etc.

    I personally like the AD400pro more (ttl, slightly smaller, mine came with a carry case, better UI, more control over the modeling flash etc), but the AD600BM is still a good flash and if you can save some money and get other things like modifiers with that saved money instead, that might be worth it.

  • @ScottDumas

    @ScottDumas

    4 жыл бұрын

    For me (I have and use both) I'd choose the AD400 if using modifiers... it's just easier to throw a big bowens mount softbox on there, have a secure fit on any standard light stand etc. With the AD200, you either have to have a mounting bracket or the 2 light combo bracket if you want to mount it securely instead of the little 1/4-20 screw thread on the body... and while the bulb fills up softboxes nicely as well, I end up carrying more stuff with me when using the AD200 which kind of counteracts the size. I love it for what it is, and just throwing it on a 1/4-20 thread light stand to bounce of a wall or ceiling it's beautiful, but that's mainly how I use it, and go for the AD400 otherwise.

    Hi! You could always use a couple AD200s, and there is a bracket available to mount 2 in one combined setup which should give you around the same power as this. Not sure if it will end up being less portable in the end though since you have to carry more stuff with you to make it work. Honestly though, I bring this on location all the time and it's been plenty portable, especially with the carry case. It won't fit in a bag like a speedlight, but it's great for a proper and powerful flash with ttl/hss :)

    On paper the alienbees are a better deal, but I've heard some pretty bad things about those in terms of how they hold up over time. They're not available at all in Japan so I haven't tried them personally though, so hard to say for sure.

    You still have to buy the battery and 2 transceivers, which makes it more expensive than buying one ad400. The alienbees work, but the build quality is terrible and the user experience design across all the interfaces (remote included) is not worth it. Not sure what your situation is, but in most cases I would recommend just saving up, you'll save more money and have way less headaches long term.

    That is true in a lot of ways, but something like the more adaptable mount is a nice trick the AD600 doesn't have. Some people would be happy to save the difference in cost too, when the AD400 might already be pushing their budget and they don't have the need for anything more.
