5 Lessons I Learned by Moving to a New City Alone

Same, I've always lived in a small town but I'm moving to LA in a few years and I'm TERRIFIED to say the least. I'm going to drive and I've never really been away from family and friends but I'm also anthropophobic (fear of people, and it's not like sonething ppl relate to bc they say they do but they don't understand the severity of it) so like you can imagine the struggle. I don't plan on having roommates or pets so I'll be by myself and ill be working for myself with a monthly salary of 4k so I'll have to find a cheap but safe apartment (I've never lived in an apartment so I have no idea how the mail and everything works)

I’m moving to a new city 3 hours away from home. Super nervous. But I’m making the most money I’ve ever made, I know no one in the new city, I’ve been able to find a place to stay with a roommate for now. But regardless, I’m so so so scared. But these are the moments that I’ve prayed for. And I can’t let the fear hold me back. No matter what my emotions tell me. Cmon universe, lead the way!

Moved from Dallas / Ft. Worth metroplex and have not missed the over population from thousands of immigrants flooding in daily, insane gridlock traffic, crime or drugs. Feels so good to slow down, relax and enjoy life for the first time in 30 years. In the metroplex it was always a hectic rush with another car always 6 inches off your bumper. Stress was the norm for the day and finally I had enough and told my friends "I'm outta here, moving to a small farm community Mayberry type town where the pace is slow and people are friendlier" They were like "You'll never do it" 4 months later my house was sold, quit my job, had a garage sale getting rid of everything I didn't need or use, packed up and never looked back. I now ride a Redline Proline 26" with Bullseye components year 'round. Great cardio and zero maintenance, insurance, gas etc. Best decision I ever made!! 🙂 You cannot put a price on your mental well being and peace of mind which I now embrace and enjoy. Now I control the pace of my day, my work schedule and finally am able to spend time with God, my wife, my cat 'Lil and guitar collection on a daily basis! Don't wait till you're 49 to make a change like I did. I thought I had to stay in the city and make money, money, money which looking back did nothing but force me to spend my life at work, sitting in traffic or sleeping so I could buy a new house, cars, motorcycles and rooms full of stuff I could show off, but rarely used.

Asking people for help is SUCH a big one. I had been trying to move out of the USA for years. I'm from Italy and moved here for work but absolutely hated it. I wanted to move back to Italy so bad but it's hard to find a job. One summer, while I was renting out an apartment for a month, I told my landlord at the time I was looking for permanent work opportunities. It sort of just came up in conversation but he hooked me up!! I'm moving back this summer after 10 years!!!!

I'm an 18 year old freshly out out of high school and have saved up about $1400. Planning on moving to NYC in a month only taking my back pack with some clothes and water. I'm going by Greyhound it will be a 46hr ride!😬.I don't know a soul in NYC and really have no plan, I'm pretty scared but excited. Everyone is calling me crazy but I feel like this journey is well needed for me as I tend to take for granted the thing's I have such as food, shelter and family. Being 1700 miles away will be quite a challenge but hopefully will make be a better person as my journey continues.🗽🌆🏙️....oh btw any extra tips or advice 🤷🏽‍♂️ 😅

@fgh It's been a wild ride.😂 Coming from a small city in the panhandle of Texas to a mega city like new York can be overwhelming at first but I adapted to the environment fairly quick. I'd say I got used to NY's lifestyle in about 2 weeks. I have 2 jobs and at first I stayed at a shelter for about a week, until I found a place on Craigslist.😅 I now live in an apartment with 5 other guys but signed no lease as I didn't want to commit to NY just yet. I will be leaving NY in 2 months though to go back to Texas to get my associates at the local community college. But will hopefully transfer to NYU after I'm done and come back to New York as I really do love it here and kinda consider myself a New Yorker now 🗽❤️...Plus I'd think the NYU admissions officer would like my essay about my whole adventure into living in NY as a broke 18 year old kid who was able to survive here and not die 😂💀... hopefully I get accepted to NYU pray for me. 🙏🏽🙌🏽

It’s beautiful and awesome and so much to do but I hate the cold and knew I wanted to leave. You got balls though. I’m 30 and I haven’t left my state yet until I felt secure of going over to where I want to go. I’m getting a job there soon so I’m excited.

I’m doing this exact thing in Seattle right now. Came out here to get residency so I can apply to a grad program at UW. I’m sleeping on a bunk bed in a hostel-style Airbnb while I find a job and a place to live. I’ve never lived in a city this big. Just getting around is harder than what I’m used to. I don’t even know if I’ll get into this program or keep up at the jobs I’m applying to, I’m so outside my comfort zone. I know it will be good for me to at least try even if it doesn’t work out but damn… this is some of the hardest shit I’ve ever done. What makes it even harder is I met someone in my hometown days before I left and we’re already talking about how we we feel about long distance relationships bc neither of us have felt a connection like that in ages. It’s all making me want to go back so bad, but I don’t think I’d ever forgive myself for giving up. There’s nothing there for me in that small rural town except some guy I’ve known for a week. Anyway sorry to ramble. I appreciate your video, it helps knowing other people have done this stuff too and gotten through it.

This really resonated with me despite the video being 2 years old. I’m currently going through a breakup that’s forcing me to engage as we lived together. I’m moving to a new city with family, but it still feels as difficult as you had described. I’m realizing the stuff you had realized at the time and thank you for your time and experience.

9:19 Very true! I'm from Toronto born and raised and I have always been thinking about moving to Texas one day since I was a kid, I'm now 25 and my life is in a position where that could be possible soon. Today I made my mind up finally and give myself a year to save up and get everything in order and make that move all alone!

Yes, yes, yes!!! Totally seconding prioritizing your mental health! I thought my mental health was a result of my situation, so I moved out to Seattle 5 yrs ago thinking everything would 100% improve. Well, yeah, those five years were a waste, lol, because things never improved! I didn’t start seeking therapy until about 1.5 years ago and it wasn’t until then that I became aware of myself (turns out I had untreated anxiety) and what held me back. I can validate so much of this video cuz I know what’s it’s like to not prioritize yourself first. If I had, I would have had a better experience. That said, moving to a new city to start again “right” this time, God willing. 😁
