Seemed very well practiced 😉 for me it's when I'm stood over the ball for too long trying to get comfortable, and I never walk away to reset, I take too long as it is! I've been practicing a no hesitation chipping game on the course, a bit hit and miss at first, since then my confidence has shot right up. Even chipped one in last week 👍🏼

Played 14 holes yesterday (walking w a pull cart)and every single one of these 5 tips applied to my game exactly! It’s as if you had been watching me play 😂. One simple thing I would add: Stay hydrated throughout your round. I’ve realized often times too late that when I’m out walking up and down hill and dale if I don’t have some sort of refreshment (water and perhaps a nibble of a little something to keep my energy up) I start getting sloppy and lose the energy and focus I need to keep going. Setup routine gets sloppy, I hurry my shots, I’m just flagged and my game suffers dramatically. Bring water and take a sip or two at every other hole... And perhaps a nibble or two of a granola bar halfway through your round. You’ll be better able to maintain focus and energy throughout your play over 3 hours.

Thanks Matt. Great lesson on course management basics...especially on understanding that bogie golf is 90 (par 72), so you can even double bogie several holes and still break 100. Lately have been playing holes for bogie with par being like birdie. Makes the rounds easier and I am finding myself shooting low to mid 90’s regularly. Next step will be to break 90 regularly - which these pointers will give a great baseline for that success.

Thanks for this video, Matt. I especially appreciate the “respect short putts” advice. I have made it a habit, when I have a putt that is 5 feet or shorter to tell myself out loud “respect this short putt”. It helps me to remember to take my time, go thru my putting routine, and focus on making the putt.

Particularly liked this one Matt, thank you. I average between late 90's on a good day to 103 on a bad day on a Par 71 course. I lose my shots on 2nd shots on a fairway on a par 5 and anything in side 100 yards from the green. I am 28 handicap. Your videos help a lot. Thank you

Another putting tip that has helped me improve my results significantly--aim at the back of the cup. I'm still struggling to make that a consistent practice, but I used to putt with the thought that I just needed to get it over the front lip of the cup...and I used to leave an indecent number of putts just short of the hole. If I'm aiming at hit the back lip of the hole, I've got enough momentum to get over that mysterious barrier that seems to pop up about an inch shy of the hole on so many putts. Love the rest of the advice! When I remember to do it, I get much better results. One thing I've discovered with shots past trees...I usually have much better luck punching it under the tree with what is basically a chip shot with a 4 hybrid than I have trying to hit over or around trees. A lot of that, I know, is just being confident in my shot and not second-guessing myself even as I'm in the middle of my swing, but under the trees means there's no chance of a stray branch, or me hitting off a few degrees and catching the tree I was trying to hit around. The big thing I need to work on (which I keep telling myself, and then never getting around to) is finding time to hit the driving range and develop confidence and familiarity with my wedges and fairway woods. I'm at maybe 50-60% reliability with my woods...when I hit them well, I love the results, but I mishit them a lot, and I ~think~ I know my yardages for my wedges, but I don't play any of them consistently enough to feel confident with much besides a full swing with my pitching wedge.

One thing related to this is the clubs you are using. I have access to lots of clubs, many of them are grand old designs. My 5 iron is a Ping G2, a favorite. 6 iron is either a Calloway X or Tour Edge 4 iron. For a 7 iron, my Tour Edge 5 iron works fine. 8 is either an M6 8 iron or the Tour Edge 6 iron. 9 iron is a Ping G400. Good set of wedges and woods/hybrid which I don't understand yet, and a modern day driver. Starting off with clubs that will get you there helps, not necessarily a matching set of modern day clubs, especially at today's prices.

It takes A LOT of trial an error to realize it isn’t necessary to pound driver on those really short par 4s around 260-300 yards when you can punch a 7 or 8 iron out there most likely straight. On the flip side, also no need to be scared to swing driver if it’s your most comfortable club to hit a ball off a tee. Putting in some range time to dial in the swing path to at least contact the ball well enough to occasionally stay between the trees on the left and right helps. Many a long day spent hitting recovery shots as the 2nd shot which could also compound the problem. Dreams of a 4 becomes a 6 becomes an 8.

Breaking 100 is one of my goals for this year, I came SO CLOSE earlier this year, I only needed a double bogey on the 18th hole par 4 to shoot 99, and I 3 putt for quad to finish with 101. I was GUTTED. I have a chance tomorrow, fingers crossed but it's a course I haven't played yet, so I'm not expecting it. Not unless my driver slice magically goes away between now and then 😅

The mental side of the game seems to impact the physical. The basic fundamentals of aim and setup and head still, etc…can get lost when staring down the distance on the watch or worrying about the lie of the ball (uphill, downhill, tight, perfect fairway, thick grass, or amongst the trees). Taking less club off the tee, maybe even a mid-iron is a tough one to practice if you feel you have wide open spaces and see the playing partners are mashing driver for the sake of mashing driver, completely forgetting it’s really easy to “hit” the driver under 100 yards when there is serious operator error. I was given the half wedge tip in a recent lesson. Take whatever you use as a sand wedge (54,56,whatever) and learn the half swing pitch shot. Halfway back, halfway follow through. Rotate and get that back heel to raise up even though it’s a short shot. Add or decrease the amount of backswing/follow through for more or less carry. 3/4 backswing then means 3/4 follow through. Once you have a good idea and see better results focusing with just one club you can then work in the other wedges or short irons if you need more or less loft. I tend to worry too much about distance when inside 150 thinking it’s still full swing time. “Oh well I just have to hit this exact wedge at 115 or 100 or 85 or 70.” Also not respecting or dismissing the 3-6 footers is a recipe for a stroke gained on the scorecard. Don’t feel I have to make all of them, but some of them.

I believe the 4th tip is HUGE. I started assessing my game and where I was falling short and it was 100 yards and in. I could get near the green in 2 on a par 4 and then end up taking another 4-5 shots to get it in. I went to the range and spent about 70 or the 100 balls just hitting my 60 at 3 different speeds. Using a launch monitor it was easier for me to feel the speed of the swing rather than a percentage of backswing. I learned to swing 35, 45, and 55mph on command for little pitch shots and new the distances for each. Instantly took about shots off my game. Used to shoot 100-105 and now I’m 90-95. When I get close to the green now, it’s an automatic up and 2 putt at worst.

I generally shoot close to 90 when I play, but am hoping to ask a question here anyway. I could be a lot lower, but I tend to 3 putt a lot of holes. I practice my putting and even before a round, I seem to be able to hit even long putts on the practice green to within a foot or two. Once the round starts, I can't seem to hit my first putt close. I'm sure it's all mental, but how do I get past it? It's costing probably 6-8 strokes a round!

That's been my issue lately, too. I feel good on the practice green, then I lose the touch. Some greens feel fast, some slow. I know it's mostly a mental thing, but I can't push past it. Been costing me probably 10 strokes/round.
