I use no oil at all when cooking. Instead I water fry. I use water in place of oil and allow it to simmer before adding veggies. This way is minimalist friendly!

Hey there, a quick note. Acrylamide is in alot of foods when they are raised to a high temp. It can be found in teas, coffees, rice and bread products, and i think i couple of things like olives and other similar types of plant based foods. the acrylamide is a chemical product of high temperatures within the presence of certain sugers by a process known as the mallard reaction. in other words, that reaction that means the seared golden brown goodness we all love so much create acrylamide as a by product in things not meat, fish, poultry, or dairy! however the levels of acrylamide are so low as to not pose a serious health risk unless you over consume over a long period of time. in other words, if you are obese eating nothing but fried foods.

I agree with the below comments. Olive oil becomes toxic when used for frying as it has a low smoking point. A better alternative would be rapeseed oil or coconut oil. I still use olive oil but for seasoning salads as good quality extra virgin oil is delicious.

Hello from Turkey to the beloved Japan! About the olive oil... I am from the west part of Turkey where olive is very abundant. it is the indispensible part of our cuisine. Anyhow, there has been a debate going on whether olive oil gets oxidant when it is exposed to the heat. So, I have started adding raw olive oil to the already-cooked dish. And if I have to use some oil right away to fry or saute, I go for 'ghee' or cold pressed organic sun flower oil; if no other option, I still go for olive oil. In eastern culture, ghee is believed to be very healthy and nutritious and quite resistant to heat. Thank you for your videos, they are so inspiring and lovely. Hope to watch more of them. Wish you the best!

Iʻve been sugar-free since July 2017. To me, sugar-free means no honey, no dates, no sugar, no fruits (except low glycemic ones like blueberries, blackberries, and strawberries, but limit your portions to 1/4 cup, 1/2 cup and 1 cup respectively), and the only sweeteners that are allowed are monkfruit, erythritol and stevia. The soy milk you are substituting -- I wouldnʻt drink it. Educate yourself on what soy products do to estrogen and testosterone (and you will stop using soy products). Besides, soy milk has barely any soy in it. Read the labels. Coffee, I drink that; nobody gets between me and my coffee!! Itʻs best for me when itʻs black, but I will drink it with heavy whipping cream when I want to treat myself. The oils and fats I use are grass-fed butter, olive oil, coconut oil, ghee, bacon fat, tallow, lard, avocado oil. I also do intermittent fasting, I donʻt snack, aim for two meals a day, and when Iʻm really working hard at eating well, I eat 7-10 cups of green leafy vegetables a day (no starchy vegetables) along with a small amount of protein. No grains. Youʻve got a good start there, and need keep researching to refine your plan.

As an arab, I'm so used to eating dates that I got bored of it (but I still love it) and consider it healthy, in my culture we only eat odd amounts (1,3,5,7,9 etc) the most common is 3 since it's a healthy amount, poorer people who struggle to find food eat far more and people who are on a diet eat 1. During Ramadan, we fast (no food even no water) from sun rise to sun set, and the first food we eat are dates because one of the health benefits of eating dates is restoring all the minerals and vitamins we lost throughout our fasting and gives us a boost of energy. I really love your videos and it had inspired me to become a minimalist, thank you 😊 ❤ Also please don't use extra Virginia olive oil, it's unhealthy if you use it for cooking, use regular olive oil (it shouldn't say extra virgin or even virgin) also its great for eliminating split ends and softening the skin, arab women have used it for centuries and my grandmother used to heat it up and smear it on my belly when I had a stomach ache.

@@karinjohnstone6690 I searched the reason why (I translated it to english so it may come a bit weird) and it said "And about the odd number recommended by the Messenger, may God bless him and grant him peace, an American researcher says: The benefit of eating dates or wet in odd numbers is that in this case the sugars are transformed into carbohydrates that give the body energy. But if a person eats them in even numbers, the sugars are converted into sugars and potassium, which affects kidney functions" its so cool how the amount you eat of anything affects you. Muslims and arabs eat odd amounts because that is what the prophet mohammad pbuh did and it became a sunnah and part of an eating etiquette. But years later we found out why he always ate in odd amounts.

Actually, the presence of acrylamide is NOT specifically labeled throughout the US on the shelf of foods that have this ingredient, as shown in the chips you showed at 1:47. The requirement to shelf-label acrylamide is specific to a California state law (as stated on the notice). The other 49 states do not have this requirement/law. You would have to look at the list of ingredients on the package's label to know what is in the item you're purchasing. (A full consolidated list, disclosing all of the ingredients in any food item, IS required to be shown on a label, across all 50 states and territories of the US.)

Acrylamide occurs naturally when cooking certain foods. No human studies have been conducted, but it's possible that repeated, prolonged exposure can damage the nervous system or increase your risk of cancer. In lab studies, it was found that acrylamide does cause cancer in laboratory animals, but the doses given to these animals is way higher than anything we could possibly consume. So, acrylamide is not good, but you shouldn't worry too much.

I've been using cast iron pans for years now, and just recently got a couple carbon steel pans. Cast iron retains heat really well, carbon steel heats up quickly. With consistent use and seasoning, they are slick as butter. They last a lifetime, maybe generations. The perfect cookware for a minimalist. All you have to do after using them is scrub them with a bit of soap and water, or salt, then heat them up a bit on the stove and rub a tiny bit of oil on them with an old rag or t-shirt. Learned that from Cowboy Kent Rollins here on the KZreads. 🤙

This is a common misconception because olive oil tends to smoke at high heats. However, the smoking isn't correlated to the harmful oxidative breakdown that other oils will have at high heats. In fact, because olive oil is so rich in antioxidants, the oil itself is resistant to oxidation while cooking, so it remains healthy to eat-- just use ventilation when you cook!

I give up oil completely at home. I simply don’t cook w/ oil at all, instead i use marble nonstick pan. I too give up sugar as i found it renders everything it touches too sweet. I replace it w/ fruits like banana in my smoothies or dates. I gave up cow’s milk 6 yrs ago when i learned that i don’t need it for calcium. I now got my calcium from broccoli & bokchoy and my stomach finally thank me for stopping torturing it. I’m severely lactose intolerant.

I just love you and your videos, you really inspire me! I also recently stopped cooking with vegetable oils and now also just use olive oil or coconut oil for cooking. Coconut oil is also great for cooking with because it also can reach high heat without becoming carcinogenic, so I recommend that too! You can buy the deodorized kind to cook with if you don't like the strong coconut smell.

Greetings from germany, I really enjoy your videos because they contain a lot of usefull informations. For coocking oils it depends what I want to make. Fore example, when I whant to make something in a mediterranian style I use olive oil. When I want to make something with a more "tropical" flavor I use coconut oil its great for sweat potato french fries. But when I coock meat or anything where I want to enhance the natural taste of the meal I use butter because its high on fat. Yes when used too regularly its too unhealthy but for sometimes its nice and I really recommend trying it as long as you arent vegetarian or on a diet.

I didn't find a formal source, but as I searched, olive oil is not recommended for cooking, just to directly consumption, it shouldn't be used for frying 'cause in hight temperatures it becomes bad for health. There are a lot of people that recommends avocado oil instead. Actually I started using this avocado oil, but I didn't notice any difference.

Hello, I am writing to you from Italy 🇮🇹. So... the difference between olive oil and extravirgin oil are that the former is an oil obtained from the same olives, but refined with the help of chemicals. By law, can have an higher degree of acidity . Instead, extra virgin olive oil is simply obtained with a mechanical process, is less acidic and it is healthier, "cleaner".... Infact its cost is higher. In frying it had a good, but rather strong taste. I personally use peanuts oil for frying. I hope I have helped 🙏 Instead of sugar I use stevia. I inquire about cobon that I do not know. Thanks.... to the next video👋

Hi! I studied to be a dietician and I learned in school that if you heat up extra virgin olive oil to cook with it the bonds in the chemical structure that makes it healthy in the first place (sorry I don't know the names of these chemicals in English) when heated up they break up easily and produce harmful oxidants in the body. So instead of eating something healthy you will end up with a toxic mess of a food. I don't know if it's really true or not but that's what they tought us. Lots of people cook with extra virgin olive oil thinking it's super healthy and good for them. One of the name brand Italian olive oils have the cooking version so I use that instead leaving the extra virgin for salads and foods without heating.

A lot of Olive Oil is cut with Canola (rapeseed) or other cheaper oil, so just be aware. You can find a list online of Olive oils that are pure. Single origin is a good sign. For higher heat, I often use avocado oil, ghee or animal fat (Lard, Tallow..etc). Cultured or grassfed butter and virgin coconut oil a bit too.

As I see everyone has its own way of cooking! 😊 👍Olive oil is sure a blessing! 😊 And I am team soy milk too! 🥛👍 I prefer to use ghee as well to cook as there is no caséine /lactose inside and it can be heat instead of other oils. It 's very easy to make using usual butter at home. 😊 I still keep my coffee but I don't drink instant. The problem with matcha is it can contains mercury residues sometimes. We only use acacia honey and local honey here because acacia honey is the only one that don't raise the sugar in the body. And except if we make sport dattes are too sweet for us. 😅 White bread is not so popular here we prefer it brown with more fibers inside. 😅 It was difficult to find it in Japan

Sesame oil has high smoking point. 😀 It is famous and widely used in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. I have noticed the usage of sesame quite a lot of times in Japanese food, so if sesame oil is accessible to you, it is a better alternative for heating compared to olive oil that has lower smoking point. Also ghee and coconut oil commonly used in South India along with sesame oil also have high smoking points and are safe to heat and fry. FYI, ghee is popular and widely used in all of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal.

Vegetable oils are toxic. I’ve cleaned a lot of deepfryers, we need special chemicals and paint scrapers to get the coagulated oil off, because it becomes basically plastic when heated. Getting rid of cooking oil is the greatest step in health. Saturated fats are the safe cooking fats, as they don’t break down with heat. The saturation protects them. Saturated fats are what the brain and body need. I was taught in school that olive oil is a condiment. It breaks down too fast so I don’t cook with it.

My fav drink for lunch and dinner is genmai cha. I use loose tea and brew it in a beautiful iron Japanese teapot. I had a Japanese neighbor and friend when I lived in Manhattan and she introduced me to it. I use extra virgin cold pressed olive oil that has a date on it for cooking and salads. The date tells when it was first pressed so you know the age of the oil you are using...best to use within 2 yrs of date. For high heat, I use avocado oil and for Asian dishes a little toasted sesame oil. Whenever available, buy organic oils.

The reason I quit caffeine was the same reason you quit coffee, I could tell it was doing something to my gut health, the microbiome in the stomach. When I stopped taking in caffeine my appetite changed and moods changed completely as well as being able to sleep again.

Very thought provoking! Thank you for sharing. I've been having the same sentiments about sugar for a while now. I don't actually use sugar itself much, (only in my porridge occasionally - and trying to transition to honey on that one), but there is a lot of foods that have sugars "snuck" in them. For example, I love fruit juice that is sold in convenience stores, but when I look at the labels there's hardly anything in it that actually resembles fruit(?!) and has lots of sugars instead. Making juice out of fresh fruit is far too expensive. (It is here where I live at least.) I have however given up drinking fizzy drinks and alcohol is rare too, and I found it lets me sleep better at night. Also ditched snacks and crisps and the like. And another thing that has been working really well for me is only eating between the hours of 8am and 8pm, and only ever a "two palmful". Coffee... this is interesting, because I have given up the instant stuff which just gets my pulse racing and makes me feel like bouncing off the walls, but I do brew coffee in the morning from beans and that is nice, as well as part of my morning wake-up-welcome-back-to-the-world routine. I suppose it's more of a ritual than consuming a lot of it. Do have an after-work-wind-down ritual of making jasmine tea however and that is always nice - even the sight of the iron kettle gets me happy! Will have to try and find matcha - I've never tried it before! Milk.. I tried goats milk for a while, but I had to go back to the full fat cow one .. Will try soy milk, maybe that work! Cooking Oil - YES. I've been using vegetable oil and sunflower oil, but lately no matter what brand I buy it's just not the same, (I stare at it and wonder "is this the stuff cars could run with??") so i alternate between lard and olive oil. I go through silly phases with fruits. Sometimes I eat a melon a day, other times I can't get enough of bananas, or I'm munching away on celery every chance I get - it's a little weird and my colleagues find it endlessly entertaining, but it's just how I function.. Persimmons are my newest obsession!
