I had a quartet teacher, who went to one of Yo-Yo Ma's performances. She said that someone's cell phone rang, and everyone was like *inhale*. Then Yo-Yo Ma played the note the cell phone rang at, and literally made a piece based on that note.

Story about learning Shostakovich cello concerto no.1 in 2 days: Shostakovich and Rostropovich were close friends, Shostakovich was even a professor in conservatory, where Slava studied. One day Slava read news that Shostakovich wrote a concerto for cello. Rostropovich was really upset 'cause Shostakovich didn't tell him first. Slava even thought that he found a new cellist. But after couple of days, Shostakovich invited Slava to his house to present him his new concerto. Shostakovich sat next to piano and played the concerto for Rostropovich and then asked if he liked it. Slava lost his voice for a minute and then answered that it was amazing. Shostakovich asked him to perform it. Slava once said: "I have never practiced over a 10 hours a day but when I got the score of this concerto I practiced more then 10 hours every day to learn it.

In the early 1970s we attended a Milwaukee Symphony concert. Mr. Rostropovich was booked to play a cello concerto. He was ill and the conductor announced that he sent one of his students in his stead. 10% of the audience walked out !! The conductor asked them to please not leave. The would be thrilled. The student came out and was introduced. It was Yo Yo Ma. OMG, it was incredible. We were in the front row center. What a thrill that was.
Funfact: one of Yo-Yo Ma's cellos, the Stradivari "Davidov", used to belong to Jacqueline du Pré, former wife of Daniel Barenboim. She recorded Edgar's Cello Concerto, Schumann's Cello Concerto and both of Brahms' Cello Sonatas on that instrument.

My late step-father was designated the official guide of Mstislav Rostropovich while he visited Puerto Rico in, I believe, 1970. He came to Puerto Rico under the auspices of the University of Puerto Rico where my step father was director of finance. Unfortunately I could not go to the concerts because I was in the Army in Southeast Asia at the time. My stepfather talked for years about the experience. I also got to meet famed cellist Gregor Piatigorsky who was a patron of a chess tournament in which I participated. Thanks for the video I think I'll go and listen to some Haydn now.

OH YES! Thank you for this wonderful programme. I studied cello for a few years and completely immersed myself in cello music-- solo, sonata, concerto, all kinds of chamber music, orchestral music with solos for cello, etc. (Unfortunately I had to sell my cello to cover medical expenses, and that was heartbreaking. I will never be able to afford a cello like that again.) Excellent repertoire in this survey of great cellists! There are a lot of other spectacular cellists, as you would expect. You might want to look at the duet for unaccompanied cello and violin by Kodály. Here is the story about Rostropovich's rapid learning of a great work: BBC Proms - Dmitri Shostakovich: Cello Concerto No 1 in E flat major The concerto was composed in 1959 for Mstislav Rostropovich, who committed it to memory and gave the premiere four days later. Cellists consider it to be one of the most difficult works to play in the orchestral repertoire.

Yo-Yo Ma and John Williams are really close friends. Virtually all of Williams' classical pieces and movie scores featuring lead cello are played by Yo-Yo Ma. I recommended Jaqueline du pre - Elgar also 16 hours ago & have not one approval, yet Sophie you get 52 approvals. Can you give me some of yours ?
Me: Hyung-Oppa...... Me: What in what world those two words are combined? Twoset: HYUNG-OPPAAAAAA Me: ok, then I stand corrected.
Hyung is very good at speaking and expressing his thoughts! Especially when he was talking about Yo Yo Ma :)
Why do I feel like Brett and Eddy calling Hyung *Oppa* is their way to roast him *in one word* ?
“Yo-Yo Ma is the best cellist out there.” Ling Ling: “You clearly haven’t seen me write 14 cello concertos while playing them at the same time have you?”

I love how u call Hyung “OPPA”
Here's what Ivry Gitlis says about playing: "Dear young colleagues of the up-and-coming generation, please have the courage to be yourselves, to take risks and not be copies of your recordings or of others'. Practice your instrument in order to free yourself from any psycho-technical constraint, to be able to create when you play. Listen to your inner ear, which is connected directly to your heart and spirit, the one that tells you what you feel is you! And the one you don't feel isn't you. Remember that a beautiful 'wrong' note by a Kreisler, a Thibaud, a Casals or a Callas is worth more than a thousand so-called 'right' notes and that playing that is hygienically and clinically correct is not necessarily a sign of good health! Take heart! Good health to you!" (Ivry Gitlis - January 2007)

I Love it when you guys recommend pieces. Some variations to the composers I'm usually listen to. Thanks to you I've opened my eyes for Ysaye, Vaughan Williams and Prokofiev

I’m here for the cello. My favorite instrument. Been waiting for this TwoSet! So awesome. 😍
I'm so happy, they've made lists for the two instruments I play, piano and cello! I could watch a million more of these. I've been finding so many new beautiful pieces.:)
One benefit of waking up way too early because of a headache: getting to watch TwoSetViolin right at upload.

Same... I'm not even a cellist, but I'd love to learn cello
That recording for EMI of Don Quixote with Rostropovich, the BP and Karajan is superb, probably the best and reference for other interpretations or recordings ❤️
MORE compelling content!!! Thanks so much! My brother-in-law received his cello doctorate from Northwestern University, played for 36yrs in the Denver Symphony and principal cellist in the Colorado Central City Opera Orchestra for 25yrs. .........and I would love more "straight" performances of violin repertoire from you guys!
Rostropovich played the Shostakovich cello concerto 1 in two days. I remember my first lesson playing this concerto and I told to my teacher to forgive me because I practiced it only for a week. He said: "Rostropovich had a concert in only two days, so in one week you had enough time to learn it tree times." 🤣🤣🤣
two set literally exists to make puns and dad jokes and to make people happy thanks brett and eddy
I love the fact that Julie-o is included. It's such an incredible piece
Loved the video. More of these. I’m amazed you can create so many diverse videos and they have fresh ideas. Never a dull day.
Surprised that Jaqueline du Pre’s recording of the Elgar cello concerto isn’t included here.

absolutely, its really one beautiful and she plays so passionate and soulful, but also from a historical pov its what made elgar relevant/popular because before the recording appeared in the 50s (?) he wasn’t really known by a lot of people... so it would’ve been great to have that recording in the video. the selection is amazing though, hyung did a great job!

Just looked up Anner Bylsma, seems he passed away on July 25th, 2019 at the age of 85yrs old. All the greats must one day leave us, how fortunate we are to have had them. Thanks for another great episode, great choices Hyung!

Yes, Bijlsma had a great life. I knew him and played at his master classes. He spoke to me as the lead member of my recital jury and told a student of his (Tanya Tomkins from California) that my recital was the best and most musical that year (1988) at Amsterdam’s Sweelinck Conservatory of Music. Greatest honor of my life as a cellist!

Some of my favorite cello performances include Jacqueline Du Pre’s recording of the Elgar cello concerto, Mischa Maisky’s recording of the Bach Cello suites, Yo-Yo Ma’s recording Le Cygne and Saint Saens Cello concerto, Lynn Harrell’s recording of the Haydn Cello Concerto, and Rostrovich’s recording of the Rococo Variations by Tchaikovsky. You should do a Flute version of this!!!
Cello speaks to my soul. I literally cried when I saw Rostropovich playing Bach's Cello Suite in front of the Berlin Wall
Finally Twoset gives some much-needed attention to us poor cellists!
