5 Drinks You Have To Try In Vietnam
Ойын-сауық
In this episode we wanted to shed light on some lesser known delicious drinks of Vietnam. We just happen to choose the hottest day ever to film it. I started strong but by the end i was having a bit of a heat stroke. Luckily the next day we had the first big rain of the new rainy season which brought the temperature back down to a reasonable level.

Hi Chad, unforunately that kumquat and peach tea lady was no longer selling them. Her store was closed and renovated into a noodle shop. However there is a guy who sell kinda the same stuff next to the noodle store you reviewed, the "bún cá cay" one. He has smth called "trà tắc xí muội" or "salted dry apricot and kumquat tea" and the taste is pretty interesting tho. Also try the Cơm Tấm Bình store opposite to the Bún Cá Cay as they have a decent grilled pork chop. I've been his customer for almost 5 years and he knows exactly what I eat everytime I visit him haha. You should try fatty pork chop "sườn mỡ" or grilled pork belly "ba rọi nướng" with egg "trứng" and ask for runny york.

to be honest, trà tắc is literally everywhere in viet nam lots of people sell it though
"Nước sâm" is a boiled various herbs drink with sugar. There are couple of recipes, but the main ingredients are usually seaweed, sugarcane, daisy, corn silk, monk fruit,... and rock sugar. It can be up to 24 kinds of herbs, called 24 flavors - "nước sâm 24 vị". Sometimes, "sâm" is just a common name for boiled herb drink, like "sâm bí đao" (only winter melon), sâm rong biển (only seaweed), sâm bông cúc (only daisy). You gonna be an expert if you have ever tried "sâm 3 màu" - 3 colors sâm 😎

Love the beginning song.
It's quite interesting to see a foreign channel talk about these Vietnamese drinks. My favorite out of all of these is definitely rau má đậu xanh. It's actually quite sad to see many of these drinks are slowly declining in popularity since the invasion of bubble tea. Maybe you can make a part 2, I could give a few more examples, like "nha đam đường phèn", "sâm bí đao", "sâm dứa", "trà mãng cầu" (sugar apple tea, this is a new one), "sinh tố sa pô chê" (sapoche smoothie)

Hello Chad, My fiance and I went back to Vietnam in mid-July. We had so much fun eating and trying Vietnamese food. All of the drinks you mentioned here, I love the herbal drink, rau ma and tea tac. They were good and cheap comparing to the boba drinks I have in the US. My fiancee is a white. He had Vietnamse coffee 2 to 3 times a day. He couldn't have enough so he bought 3 kilograms of whole coffee beans to take home. We miss Vietnam and would love to come back soon. Thank you for making videos to show different food/drinks of Vietnam. Until I have a chance to go back, I will watch your channel to devour my craving.
As a person who lives in Vietnam for a long time, I, a Vietnamese can confirm that these taste amazing

She can cook like nobody's business, too. Hai Phong peeps are known to be really hard working and and known for their great food, I hear, and many people from Hanoi go there for food tours.
you should try Sữa Quế or Sữa Huế: condensed milk + lemon + crushed ice. Super delicious, it's like the upgraded version of ice yogurt

Hi Chad. I really enjoy your content. I was just in VN and I miss it already. Your videos remind me so much of my time over there. I'm back in TX now and it is scorching hot over here. One place I really liked when I was in VN was this drink stand called Shin Milk Tea in the Tan Phu area (I think that's correct). They used real fruit. Some fruits they told me were hard to obtain because of low supply. Either way their drinks were great if you ever want to give them a taste. Keep up the great work. -Van

This was awesome. Love the stuff you have been uploading lately ❤
I just found your channel and love your content. Informative, enthusiastic, humble, and you even show us how to cook stuff. Subscribed! I visited Vietnam for the first time in March-April and yeah, it was hot! I was also hooked on the sugarcane juice, especially with a little calamansi and salt; I "discovered" trà tắc a bit late in the game. But then iced yogurt drink intrigues me. I lived in Turkey and loved salty ayran, but perhaps because they were never colonized, Turkey missed the condensed milk boat. It never occurred to me to add it to yogurt...but can't wait to try this Vietnamese take! Rau má - I also got that introduced to me late, and when I tried it from our local Vietnamese deli, I was different. I learned here that the difference was the mung beans, so thanks for that too. :-)

I don't think the Middle East would be as into sugar as southern Vietnamese folks. That area of the world likes things more savory and tends to like sour/tangy over sweet stuff, which is why ayran is popular there as it's made from their homemade yogurt (I just googled and according to Wikipedia, yogurt originated from Turkey).
@sazji
10 ай бұрын
@@doodahgurlie oh, they are very into sugar, but they really don't mix it with savory things very much. (Consider of the syrupy suites like baklava, kadayif etc.) although people will make a few sweets with yogurt, it's generally some thing eaten with or added to savory dishes. My favorite ayran (basically salty lassi) is made from drained whole milk yogurt.
@doodahgurlie

@@sazjiOh, I understand they have dessert and make it well. When I was a teen, I worked at a French bakery owned by a Lebanese guy where I met one of my BFFs who is of Jordanian/Palestinian ethnicity and her family owned a Mediterranean restaurant...also dated a Lebanese guy. Also worked for a Iranian guy later on in life. So I know a little bit about their food including their amazing sweets/desserts (in my initial response to you that I eventually edited out, I was going to quality it by mentioning the first time I had baklava, I about died from a sugar rush since it was drenched in honey). But yes, they don't really add additional sugar to their savory dishes. When I first ate their food, it was actually too sour for me until my taste buds adapted to that flavor profile, at which point, I learned to love tabbouleh, fattoush, etc. I also mentioned ayran a few posts before you did as I learned to make my own yogurt from my friend a couple of decades ago. Her family sold ayran in their restaurant, which was where I tried it and was not a fan initially. Now I love it and find it refreshing. I made a few batches the past couple of weeks or so as it's been hot as heck in the US.
Love the content and how you edit your videos its very entertaining, keep up the good work!😄

Thank you for create awesome video about vietnamese food!
Man, really chill to see your video, but I felt more surprise about the drink you recommend for people :)) the first and second drink, its astonishing, no doubt, but from the third drink and above, not everyone, even include Vietnamese people can really take the taste of them, but when you feel tally with its, yeah sure it good to try.
Hey man, i just wanna say that your content and the edit style is so cool. Hope you can maitain this style!
bro real chad when review Vietnam. Vietnam on top!!
I've actually seen people drink 4 of 5 of the drinks before. The only one I've not seen was the yogurt drink and now I'm curious. I'm not a fan of the overly sugar-y drinks (been making my own yogurt for years and never sweeten it...but have used it recently to make ayran, which is a savory yogurt drink popular in the Middle East areas). Would love to see you do more of these as I'm curious what other unique drinks are offered. You should have added the natural Vietnamese Gatorade (chanh muoi) as it'll replenish your electrolytes on a hot day like that. Also would like you to do a coffee version. I know coconut, egg, salted, peanut butter, yogurt, pandan, etc., are supposed to all be good.

I'd say most food and drink stalls offer cheap and affordable prices partly because the ingredient sources, either widely available and common grade or cutting on some safety sides. If you have to take precautions, you can order "không đá" (= no ice) and buy or use ice somewhere you trust
Fun fact: the recipe for the "trà đào" is very similar to the tea in "trà tắc".
You should try ‘bánh tráng trộn’ our traditional food it’s pretty good and very delicious (im just a student in Viet Nam so i hope there is no english mistakes in my comment)

Like the vibe in your video. That's really hot. Reminds me of a day when it hit 117F in Phoenix, AZ. Rau má is pennywort which has been used as flavor in drinks for a long time in Vietnam. Sâm is ginseng.
@Mouse2409

Sâm is not ginseng. Nước sâm is usually a combination of several roots and leaves, pandan leaves and sugarcane. My family used to sell it in the 80s. Some people might throw in crystal sugar as well.
We love nuoc sam here in Garden Grove. Luc Dinh Ky makes a great Sam Bo Luong, sold everywhere now.

Rau má is a vegetable name pennywort green. There's is another kind of pennywort, the "sen dù", which is use to garden garnish only, they have round leaves like lotus leaves. The one we use in culinary is the one call "wild" pennywort. They have more saggy eged leaves, and grow like crazy in the rainny season!
in vn there's a lot of souring agents like tamarind and other natural stuff. since you're a chef maybo do a canh chua as an experiment to see taste test. depending on the region they have so many souring agent for a version of canh chua
