I would also recommend that new hunters listen to videos of POTA activations by Thomas, K4SWL. Thomas will focus the camera on his log so you can real-time crosscheck your copy against his. Initially, the activator / hunter exchange was too fast for me to copy, but then I began to pick out the key words as you describe in your videos. Before long, I was able to copy the entire exchange which gave me confidence to get on the air as a hunter and eventually an activator.

Great presentation. Funny story about learning CW. I got a baptism under fire at our club doing CW contesting. At one point early on, I asked my Elmer why everyone was sending "X". He had no idea what I was talking about, until he realized I was talking about them sending "T U" for thank you, just run together.

Nice job Kyle on the cw series. You might want to add the greetings most send GM, GA, and GE. I found when I was learning to copy faster code speeds that if I stumbled decoding on something early in the message I might just miss it all because I fell behind. So if you learn all the general protocol you’re well on your way. I also found that watching POTA activation KZread videos is a great way to practice copying all kinds of fists and speeds. Many thanks to all that post such videos! Especially those that I made a contact with.

100% agree on all of these. Good video man! Way better than the one I did. POTA hunting and SOTA chasing is probably the easiest way for new CW operators to get on the air.

Great video for a CW newbie. I just started my CW journey about 3 weeks ago with the Long Island CW Club, and my primary goal is becoming proficient with field ops like POTA using CW. This was very helpful, and the fact that I could recognize several of the characters as you keyed them was very cool. Great format for the video.

The BK prosign at the beginning/end of a transmission is a bit confusing to me. I'll try to adapt, though. I would expect the sending station to end a transmission with KN (over to specific station), then the other station responding with RR to start. I'm an occasional CW operator, mainly Field Day. KN, is what I learned as a novice licensee. Funny story; during one FD I worked a station that sent "3A DE". It took a couple minutes to realize he was sending "Delaware". At first I was thinking "FROM WHERE?" 73, KC4JGC

I would also add "call ?", as the activator did not give his park number. not all hunters use the spot page. Thx for the vid. B.

Excellent. Tnx. Should point out however that it's a bit controversial with regard to BK. Some believe it is not a Prosign. Others say that it should be a Prosign. Some of the logic behind not sending as a prosign is that if for any reason (QSB; QRM etc) and the B gets missed you just sent the Prosign SK which is end of contact.

Great video Kyle. Does the park number come in to the standard exchange at all or is that a preference for the activator? I know it is not needed and in some cases like FT8, it is not possible due to a character limitation.

  • @AA0Z

For a new operator I would not worry about the park number. When you submit your log when logs match up for activators you will get the park to park credit.
