Just a side comment on point 5 - New skiers should, if at all possible, NOT go for their first time on the weekend or a holiday period. For the first time, try to go midweek when the slopes are not crowded and you can learn without having to worry about the other 50,000 people crowding you on the hill and in the long lift lines. You will enjoy it so much more, and really see how much fun it can be.

Get lessons and work on it often so you canprogress and get off the easy Green runs where the most dangerous out of control new skiers make life very risky. Once you get on the intermediate terrain for downhill alpine or Telemark skiing it weeds out the ultra newbies equipped with zero lessons and who have No F. Idea at all.

I completely agree with you on taking lessons. I have been skiing for 11 years now, and still make the same stupid mistakes every time I go skiing. I had my dad teach me how to ski, and at the time he was very experienced and had been skiing since he was in high school so if you have a relative who is very close to you and is very experienced I recommend that you ask them to teach you to ski just so you can save a little bit of money, but I would still take ski lessons just to be safe. No one is perfect, and there is always room for improvement. Nice Vid by the way!

If someone has skied for 30 years and they are World Cup Gold Medalists, that does Not make them Teachers. Someone with 2 years of skiing experience could be a much better teacher. One has nothing to do with the other. The vast majority of the world's "Ski Instructors" have no idea how to teach skiing but they are better than nothing.

Also some advice, if you get more experienced and you see someone who's clearly stuck and conflicted about going down the trail, help them! Last year my "friends" convinced me to go down what they called an easy trail, well for me it was terrifying and I knew I was not going down that trail safely as I didn't have enough experience. I wasn't sure what to do because it was too late to go back so I shuffled to the side and waited for help. No one stopped except one guy who was 30+ years experienced. It was awkward but we got down just fine.

Thank you! Great video, I will highly recommend this video to my friends , first timers. I did all 5 mistakes on my 1st skiing trip few years back and I hated skiing and snow, dreaded to go on a skiing trip with my family this Christmas. This year I took a smarter approach , got all the gear, helmet especially, and avoided all 5 mistakes in this video. I took a private lesson with instructor and then at my own pace, slowly but carefully I was progressing a little every day, going up and carrying my skis and riding off for 10 seconds short on the empty side of the bottom of the trail, where instructor told me would be a great safe spot to learn. The slow progression and safe skiing gave me the confidence that I could enjoy this sport eventually.. I am not physically fit, but I understood why people enjoy skiing and atmosphere on the slopes so much at any shape and level. I also realized that I do want to share my husband's passion of skiing and be able to go on adult trips for having fun as a couple without kids. Now when I got back I started to educate myself more about skiing , watching KZread videos about various ski resorts, pros and cons, tips for beginners and I am really excited to go on a ski trip again. Videos like yours help a lot to avoid injuries and get in love with this great outdoor activity.

Bro please wear a helmet, it’s saved my life more than once. Even when your a really comfortable rider. For example, last weekend I was just skiing switch down the park and all of the sudden I’m sending it switch into a rail when I was not even close to ready. Long story short, I probably would’ve died/gotten some major brain damage if I wasn’t wearing a helmet.

I got a panic attack after falling half way down the mountain and just sat there hyperventilating. Definitely not a great idea, luckily a kind guy decided to separate from his friends and help me calm down and get in the right mind set to finish going down the mountain.

I have both skied and snowboarded but I’ve snowboarded longer then skiing. But my mom told me that a common mistake was using poles early on because it messes up your form because you come to rely on them. If you ski without poles for a year or two, it really improves your skiing, and improves your form.

I started skiing in 1964 as a resident of Killington. I was on the Ski Patrol throughout high school and started teaching at 17. That's 51 years of Thinking about teaching and what skiing is All about, not just turning. The following is my list of the most important things that Humans need to focus on if they want their and other people's experience to be safe and positive. A number of yours are included. 1. Dress for the occasion. If you are freezing, you will not enjoy any part of the experience. 2. Borrowing clothes is fine as well as equipment BUT, take that equipment to a ski shop to make sure it suits you and have it set to your weight and ability level. 3. From the very beginning, take lessons from professionals, not your friends. You have to learn the right and responsible way to ski. 4. This is not your mountain to do as you please. You follow the same rules as you do on the road. You have a responsibility to others FIRST! Think about that. 5. Don't let friends pressure you into exceeding your experience and comfort level. Encouragement is fine but only advance when you or your instructor feel you are ready. 6. Make sure an instructor teaches you to use all types of lifts properly. Nothing in life is what it seems. There is a specific technique to using lifts. 7. Unlike other amateur sports, you can get badly hurt or even killed if you don't act responsibly. You have to consider and respect every other skier if you want them to respect You! Notice how many times I used the word Responsible? The mountain can Not be a free for all where everybody does what They want. You should think of every other skier on the mountain as if they are an explosive devise that could get you blown up. Avoid other skiers like the plague. Constantly look for them and follow the Rules of the Road, not the Mountain. The Rules of the mountain don't cover everything. They say, "The downhill skier, (the one below you), has The Right of Way. That's because they don't have eyes in the back of their heads BUT: 1. If a skier below drastically Changes Lanes, they have the responsibility to look behind them and Signal that lane change so you don't cut them off just like in your car. 2. When you want to stop, you pull over to the side of the slope/road just like in your car. 3. If you pull out to pass someone, you signal them by saying On Your Left or Right. You don't get to just blast by people who might increase the radius of their turn just as you go by. 4. Give skiers below a wide birth. Think of all skiers below you as a hazard. They can't see you and may not consider you. Especially those that live by the mountain rule. 5. Skiing will be more fun if everyone acts responsibly. That means You too!

Friends and family can quite often be great teachers (as was the case with me), and even youtube tutorials can take you places. Lessons are expensive and by stating you shouldnt get into the sport without them, might push people away from the sport. To another of your points, obviously there is certain courtesy required of anyone going out to the mountain, however your analogy of the skiiers needing to behave like "motorists" with the strict rules to adhere to as you listed is at the very least, excessive.

Absolutely take a lesson. Not everyone needs a profession lesson, but everyone can benefit from one. I've been skiing over 40 years, and instructing for about 12. A good instructor gives you a good experience and you'll have lots of fun and build proper fundamentals.

Going up slowly in difficulty is what I usually do. I made the mistake of going skiing in the Alps with a friend last month when the last time I was skiing was 4 years ago on the east coast. I spent 30 minutes frustrated on a bunny slope because it wasn’t even steep enough to practice parallel turns, so when he asked me if I was ready for a promotion I gave a confident “Yes!” Well, his idea of a promotion was to take me straight to a red intermediate slope from the bunny slope… This thing was steeper than any blue square I’ve ever done in Virginia. I almost was paralyzed with fear and stuck on the mountain. I managed to drift sideways down the steep part with his help. I didn’t fall down at all that day, but came close once Later I looked at the slope map and there was a very long “easy” slope that would have been the obvious next progression from the baby bunny slope. Never trusting someone else again!!

great advice dude. I started wearing a helmet when I got older and advanced to the blue trails. This is going to sound negative but the reason I started wearing it is because of reckless snowboarders and beginners running into me.

A tip given to me by a much better skier (she had been a pro in gymnastics as well): When you ask yourselves "should we do a last one?" after having been riding the whole day, just stop there. Your muscles are probably tired now and your body won't respond as well as earlier that day. This is when accidents happen just because the strength is not there anymore.

Ok soooo I went skiing with my sister and she took me on one of the hardest hills in the park she didn’t know and neither did I. I tried it and failed miserably and was literally petrified. The hill was so steep. I of course was sitting in the middle of the hill so I’m sorry fello skiers/snowboarders... this group of people said wtf are you doing on the hardest hill lmao they gave me a lot of advice and helped so much. I eventually got down 30 minutes later and went on the bunny hills and got a lot better! I’m excited for next season to keep practicing 😌

Yesterday was my first day skiing, it was hot as hell(4-10C 40-50F+clear sky and scorching sun) with great powdery soft perfect snow on Mt Hermon. I overdressed (Thermal an UnderArmour and a helmet ofc!) other people were wearing t shirt+coat (one even was in a tank top), The day was perfect! Went on without taking a lesson on the medium track(blue) and after 4 tries I didn't fall anymore, I decided to switch to snow blades and it was the best decision! I had full control, great slalom ability, full ability to break and drift and made the track another 3 times perfectly. for my last ride of the day I took the big lift all the way up and went for a red track(circle?), It was the most fun I have had that day! All thanks to "Stomp It Tutorials" 10 tips and YT. Didn't manage to do plow breaking very well but I aced the parallel turning and breaking as it was more intuitive for me so I was fine.

I skiied once. It was barely skiing. I was more like trying to do it, but too chicken to go down hill. It wasn't a great experience since I was pressured by my boyfriend's family to do it even when I haven't done it before. I didn't have the correct gear, never took lessons, so I felt like a fish out of the water. My boundaries were crossed and I felt I wasn't heard when I said no. It was a bad first time, but I still want to conquer my fear and really properly do it next time.

Not getting a lesson is not a mistake. First time I skied was on an indoor slope that had like 20 meter beginner area to basically learn to stand on your skis and then 500 meter red slope. That's it. It took me about an hour before I could make it down the red slope without falling. No trainer was involved.

But also I wish people knew more rules as well when skiing my Mountian has a bunch of Billy’s who s turn every other turn and just cut right in front of people and than complain it’s really ignorant, like one time this lady complained about all my buddy’s and me going to fast when we are all experienced skiers and have been skiing for years, people really just need to get better at skiing

to be honest skiing during the day is good for progresion but at night is very fun and you can see the lines people are taking because of the lights comeing down and making a shadow on the ground so you wont trip on ruts. also sking at night is a much more fun experiance for firstimers i did that and it was realy fun.

When I was a kid, I never wore a helmet when skiing (always had a stylish toque on though!) Not sure how my parents let me get away with it. The first time I wore a helmet, I was transitioning to snowboarding. The first day, I did a full scorpion and dented my helmet in. Definitely invest in a helmet, I would probably not be here if it weren't for that!

Getting hurt seriously makes you not want to ski. My first serious fall, I got a small tear in my mensicus. These aren't that serious or bad, but it was still extremely scary, sliding out down a double black diamond tree trail. It just disheartened me. I didn't ski that much for the next year, and onwards. I couldn't imagine if that would of happened if I was a beginner.
