I've been browsing basses. Looking to collect all the shiny pieces of equipment that catch my eye. Trying to throw money I don't have at things I don't really need and. As I'm scrolling, I hear "Prioritizing playing over gear." I stop scrolling my apps and start focusing on picking up my bass. Words I needed to hear. Thank you, Rob.

Great video! After playing with lots of bands for over 20 years, I can say with confidence that if you cover the steps 1 and 2 you are pretty much set. Steps 3 and 4 are a must if you plan to gig and the 3rd is the key to success. I'm not a successful musician btw but I could pretty much fit in any band, gig whenever and record, because I had steps 1, 2 4 and 5 covered.

Great video Rob. A lot of great advice for the younger folks. It's great to see you pass the torch the younger generation . What amazes me about the musician community in every place how many actual douchebags there are. And they get away with being douchebags. That part I never got. It doesn't take no effort to be chill, and it just irks the shit out of me to see people put so much energy into being assholes to other people. Especially in the local music communities. I've seen this firsthand in the big three cities. Same shit different place and that goes for a lot of club owners as well.

Dude, I hated it because the music was not for me. The only reason I joined/stayed is because no other band would take me. So, I left and practiced as hell until other bands took interest. Now, I only join bands that's compatible with my music palette.

I've been playing metal since I was 14, I'm 52 now ( older man to younger men , save for retirement it comes quicker than think it will) I always sound like me regardless of the amp I use because I came up listening to and learning the big 4 before they were the big 4. Awesome video rob! In high school we had a class called the musicians process that I took 3 out of my 4 years of highschool. It taught me a lot about proper practice and time management. The class was amazing. I also highly recommend the book the inner game of music for anyone interested. It talks about that inner voice in your head and how it holds you back or distracts you and when you can turn it off how you enter this flow state. It's super interesting. Lastly going back to practicing all the chimaira videos I posted were filmed like an hour after learning the song. I wanted a more raw feel to them with mistakes and all. But plan to update them soon kinda showing the evolution of a year practicing them versus the 5 or 10 minutes to a day of learning them!

Hello rob! I have a problem! I put 0.12 strings on my guitar, it's an ESP! I put that string on it because I want to tune it to Drop E so I can play songs like "Destroy and Dominate." The problem is that the strings were too high for me! It tunes well but they are too far from the neck! Do you have a solution if it gets too out of balance? I'm afraid I've warped the wood! Sorry for my English, I'm from Argentina!

I feel like I'm stuck... I have a 2 piece band with my best friend, and our attitudes towards playing are not aligned... he's unmotivated, lazy, or just outright doesn't care to participate. I keep trying to push him, and it takes him months just to play something... I have no idea what to do anymore except just do everything myself, but I'm not a drummer (he is) and programming drums is such a pain in the ass, plus, I don't know anyone else who plays drums lol

It's easier to do everything yourself or to find someone online to play with then to change your band mate's atitude. You can also use an app or pickup to convert audio to midi and use a looper app or pedal to help program and have drums play real time. I have a similar problem with my band mates they just don't have the same energy to create as I do, but I'm hopping they will be an asset in the marketing and image departments in the future.

A lot of successful bands are made up of guys like yourself (hardworking and motivated), who find one another and team up. It usually takes playing in a few bands to weed out the weak... And then the strongest, or most motivated, and most talented guys, look for others who share their same passion. So if you really want it, keep your eyes open for guys who really want it too. Also often times, established bands will swoop up hungry guys and bring them into their fold. So keep yourself out there, and your chances for success will increase!🤘

Kiss is such a bad example. "So yeah if you have TONS OF MONEY to throw at pyrotechnics and big stage lights, you too can gain popularity through music!!!"

Wait so ways being late to shows and practice and gratuitously being an asshole to the other band members isn't good? 😂

I would add. Dont expect your band mates to work as hard as you do. Not everybody has time to practice all the time. Ive lost bands because i kept getting pissed over being the only one who praxticed.

Yep, but it's survival of the fittest. So just try and align yourself with other guys who share your level of determination. Because the more guys like you that you have in your band, the greater your chances of success!
