5 Cheap AliExpress Bike Parts, that have genuinely lasted!

Спорт

I buy virtually all my bike parts on AliExpress. So here are 5 cheap things that I use nearly every day, which have lasted me many years, and thousands of miles!
SIROKO CLOTHING - 10% off (automatically applied via link below): srko.co/tracevelo
AliExpress has a bit of a reputation for cheap rubbish, but it does have some fantastic cycle equipment if you know where to look. I've been buying virtually all my bike parts from it since around 2018, and must have bought 1000’s of things related to road bikes and cycling over the years.
Not everything I've bought has been great, but there are some things which REALLY surprised me. So in this episode, I’ll cover 5 things which have really lasted, and far exceeded my expectations! A set of lightweight plastic and titanium pedals from Costelo, a pair of incredible shifters from MicroNew, carbon cycle shoes from Sidebike, disc rotors from ZRACE and ZTTO, and some carbon bike saddles (plus a few extras!).

If you haven't done it already, you might be better off drilling the old nylon bushing out with a 11.5mm drill bit. The bushing *should* be 12mm OD, assuming you are going to use a hand drill and not a lathe, you'll struggle to centre it perfectly hence the 0.5mm reduction. The bushings are usually installed in blind holes so you may not be able to get anything in behind it and even if you do, the nylon is likely to rip apart as you pull it because it's soft.

Replace the nylon bushing in the pedals with 3 MR128-2RS - 8x12x3,5mm bearings and your problem will be solved permanently. Even the needle bearings are prone to failures and wear. I upgraded all my Time road pedals to those 3 bearings and one pair has been going for about 6 years now, trouble free. Hope it helps.

@Luke RE: MicroNEW Please don’t quote me on this since it’s been a few years, but I once watched an interview with a small US boutique maker who was trying to resurrect old-style, extremely durable mechanical road derailleurs by manufacturing them in the US. He had contacted a boatload of different, domestic manufacturers, but had simply hit a wall since the expertise and molds required to make all the small parts and shapes in a rear derailleur takes an enormous amount of expertise, specific molds and know-how. Long story short - the man was forced to contact Taiwan and China, since that’s where the factories and know-how are. I don’t remember the details 100%, but I believe the story of MicroNEW essentially went something like this: back in the day, all of the bona-fide MicroSHIFT components were made in a certain, specific factory in China. I believe MicrsoSHIFT didn’t own the factory themselves, but hired them for the work, since that factory and its personnel had decades of experience in the craft under their belts. They may actually have been the ones who had produced MicroSHIFT’s components ever since the company’s conception. At some point in time in more recent years when the political tensions between Taiwan and China rose to their current level, MicroSHIFT decided to move their manufacturing over to Taiwan, and if I recall correctly, apparently refused to migrate the original China factory’s workforce, since they already had enough key IP personnel on the Taiwan side of things. The end result: you have an immensely skilled factory in China with decades of expertise under their belts, along with a workforce that possessed the know-how of making the literal, actual, bona-fide MicroSHIFT componentry, who were also left hanging in the air by their long-term contractor. So what are they to do? They take the immaterial expertise that they have accumulated over the decades, the molds they already have, make a few tweaks here and there where needed for copyright laws and and keep on doing what they’ve always done - now simply under a different name: MicroNEW. The US dude said that he was thoroughly impressed by the amount of sheer talent and expertise at that factory. It was an eye-opener for me, too. I doubt the situation has changed in a few years, so when you’re buying MicroNEW, you’re buying a product made by literally the same guys, gals and factory that used to make MicroSHIFT products for decades, along with their QC. I have a good amount of spares in stock so I haven’t pulled the trigger on new derailleurs or shifting components for a while, but I’ve bookmarked MicroNEW products on Ali and have had a good feeling about them ever since I saw the interview. Hope someone finds this information useful.

Another +1 here for MicroNEW. They are the *only* company offering 3x11 at the moment without having to mix up different shifters and components. The only problem is that most triple cranks are designed for 7-9sp so the thin 11sp chain can get caught in-between the chainrings if you're not careful. If anyone knows of a good 3x crankset that allows 22/33/44 on 11sp spacing, let me know. Agree about the serviceability too - who cares that the cables look dated? This is perfect for a winter bike where you just want to be able to swap out cables in 10 minutes.

I am 100% an MTB guy but as a long time bike mechanic I can tell you that those nylon bushings can last an eternity. On my fs Nicolai they almost exclusively use nylon bushings in the rear end and those things almost never wear out. So those bushings in these pedals should basically last forever. Indeed, I am very impressed by these pedals. Idk about the baych consistency or whether you just got a lucky pair, but if they’re all this good, they’re an easy recommendation for the vast majority of roadies out there.

There's some nuance to engineering in lighting but long as short of it is if you don't need 'that much performance' you just need a product which isn't designed stupid. Meaning it can be very low value/competitive in cost.

THANK YOU!!!! Can you post a link or the specs for those two bearings you used for the pedals. Also has is that racework crank working for you. It looks like they have changed the design for how the left arm attaches to the spindle... so hopefully no more failure point (fingers crossed). but would love an update on that. Also curious if you would try the ryet cassette (11 speed is only like 160 grams).

The needle roller bearing relies on running on a hardened precision ground shaft. I have my doubts that your knockoff pedals are specd with suitable shafts. Bronze bushings are self lubricating and more forgiving, just a thought.

I probably won't buy any more of the cheap/fake carbon railed saddles. I had a fake Arionne. The top part was great - felt every bit as good as an Arrione. But.. the rails quickly developed the cracking/popping sound that sometimes happen with them. And then while riding I was often wondering whether that was the saddle rails this time... or could it be some serious problem like my steer tube breaking. The sound mine made was very difficult to recognize where it came from. I'll spend the $200 to get a real Fizik that might last for decades without any of that annoying sound. Some metal-railed 'Chinese' saddles would probably work ok.
