There is a Toyota dealership in the San Francisco Bay Area that sent me an "offer" for a car that I am interested in. However, they added things like "Eco Block" (paint protector) and other nonsense. These were things that often cost $20-40 bulk and the dealership was charging THOUSANDS OF $$$s for it. I laughed at the absurdity of it. The salesman told me that they couldn't sell the car without it. I told him that I would look elsewhere. He actually got angry with me on the phone. So, I hung up on him. A few days later, that same guy sheepishly called me back and offered the same vehicle (with those items already "added") but I wouldn't have to pay for it. I still said, "No thanks." I explained that I'm content on waiting until the inventory is restocked and I can actually compare prices to lock in a better price. This made the salesman irate (again). I then told him that, because of his attitude, I wouldn't buy from him even if he was the only salesman available.

A few years ago a friend of mine was buying his very first car, a VW Jetta brand new car. He put his deposit and went a few days later to sign papers and pick up the car and I went along as well as another friend who had sold BMWs for a long time. There was a charge for an electronic rust protection device which was already installed without consultation or consent for $1.200.00. Our other friend who had worked at a BMW dealership and sold Beamers for years was not pleased that our buyer friend was being fleeced for this, especially since BMWs, WV and Audies are some of the least rust prone cars in the industry (not 100% but high). The buyer wanted this removed but the dealership manager got involved and said it was impossible since it was now part of the car. Manager told the buyer there was a choice... accept it or they cancel the deal and he cannot get his deposit back, period. In effect Don Valley Volkswagon blackmailed my friend to the tune of $1,299 and who knows what else they fleeced from him with their extortion. Stay away from this unscrupulous dealer.

Legally, there may be a window of opportunity to cancel b4 a week passes. Good reason to put any deposit on a reliable bank card, visa/master card, bc my bank would have gotten my deposit back. But usually, the filthy corrupt dealerships get away with this thievery.

Ran into exactly this at the Volkswagen dealer in Barrie ... bought the car off the lot .... it was added to the total and worked into the total sale price ... my neighbour spotted it under the hood a few days later .... I went all through the sales agreement , and there it was , an extra $1300 .... I demanded they remove it immediately.... ended up they gave me a cheque for $1300 , and left the useless thing on the car .... I was satisfied with the outcome , but would never buy from them again

@@cheekeebandito Its so fraudulent really, for them to think you might not notice or even question it, even though they never mention it and refuse to remove it. My friend succumbed, it was his very first car. and there is NO EVIDENCE this thing actually does anything at all, probably costs them $10. Then they get outraged when the buyer notices this, acting like the buyer is trying to pull one over their eyes. It's a form of blackmail if you think about it.

I recently went to a Toyota dealership and the manager said they were only selling vehicles with those “packages” and I said I didn’t them need. They also didn’t allow me to buy the car cash or with my own financing. We had to use their banks who were charging 8% interest. Ridiculous!! The manager told me he didn’t need my business. He even said that the car shortage is so bad that he knew for a fact that most of his cars would get sold that week. The struggle to buy a car right now is real!!

Find a dealer out in the middle of nowhere. My BIL recently bought his car at a fair price, all things considered in this surreal market; no games or mind effery in the finance office either. This was in rural mid-America, where the dealer cares more about repeat business and referrals; told my BIL they’re toughing it out and focusing on the service side as much as they can. Those are the dealers who will eventually get business from buyers like me who are postponing car purchases for now.

I would start to publicly state the Names and Locations (etc.) of these dealerships with photo proof of their gimmicks as visual, undeniable resources for local buyers to be aware of. Big dealership have the volume, so they can sort of blow certain customers off and get away with it. The Corp HQ of any car manufacturer is also good...but they will not have as much impact as exposing the gimmicks online.

I know, Toyota has done that for many, many years. I recall Toyoguard sealant packages being on the window sticker, not from the dealership, but added at the port of entry in jacksonville FL. Now they've added the clear plastic coating for the hood and door edges? for another $600+. It's about $1700 or so that you really don't need on your new car. AND my local Toyota dealer adds another $1700 package(used to be $2500!) to provide oil changes for life, along with limited engine warranty, neither very useful if you tend to change off cars every 3-5 years. And when I ask what the $900 "doc fee" is they always say well, it's for the girls in the back office to handle all the paperwork. What a crock of ....

Wow, I had no idea. I bought a new Nissan in 2015, and the Bradenton, FL Gettell dealership screwed me over big time. I was completely unprepared and naïve about what scams they would pull. It was unbelievable and what a horrible crap vehicle my Sentra is for many reasons. My daughter has an Infinity & again, what a lemon due to the tune of 8 - 10k TWICE, for MAJOR repeat transmission problems. Pull up recalls & class action lawsuits b4 buying. And don’t trust Edmunds reviews or scores, what a joke, my Nissan had transmission & AC issues at 24k and Edmonds gave it a score higher than my mom’s Toyota, which is awesome!

The hood plastic stains easily and there is NO removing the stains or the plastic yourself! On the door plastic or vinyl, rust will grow, from the mold moisture that you cannot get out, even w/ bleach. To get the plastic off of my hood, professionally of course, because it will remove the paint when removing plastic, the quote was About $800 just for the hood. Other quotes were much higher.

Excellent video, as I just made a purchase on a new vehicle through Mazda and experienced this very thing of preinstalled features that I could not decline because they were making it part of the sale when in fact the regular MSRP was much lower. I quickly declined and purchased what I wanted that was best suited for my budget and didn’t allow the dealers to pressure me into any additional packages or services. Be careful out there everyone because these dealerships are going through it and will do whatever to take advantage.

So I have brand new tires that were close to $800 a piece. ( it’s an S class coupé with 20 inch multi spoke AMG staggered wheels and performance summer tires. And I had a flat with my winter tire and it was changed too. So I got my money’s worth.

And, exactly as you described, the dealer stated they have already put the EuroGuard, the Clear Shield, and the wheel locks on the vehicle and therefore they were unable to discount the cost of these which totaled $2385. The addition of ADD ONS and ADDED MARKUP VALUE, cause they say "CHIPS SHORTAGES" it will cost me $41K, OMG! That's PISSED ME OFF! I will tell you how the dealership f-ed me over. They offered me appearance protection for an extra $500 and they showed me how they can restore your paint after your car is covered in spray paint. When you look further into the product, it doesn't even cover that. That's like trying to get people to come to your new restaurant because you can make a delicious pizza and when they get there, the server tells you they don't even serve pizza there. Also, once you agree to a price on the car you want with the sales man, then you deal with the finance man (who you really have to not trust and keep your guard up with) and then they start adding on all these extra products. Also, they can lure you in with a cheaper, shorter term product then coerce you into buying the more expensive, longer term product. They are really tricky. My best advice, is to not agree to anything or settle until you get the final contract you want and be ready to walk right out the door. Even if you have to take an Uber home, it's worth it to save yourself from getting swindled.

He also #1) insisted I'd get the Federal tax incentive on my income tax and #2) further insisted that I'd pay NO INTEREST when leasing so that after two months, when I did a buyout, those 2 months of lease payments would go directly toward the balance! It wasn't mis-labeling the MF either. Some may hide it with the "packages" dri404 mentioned, but it's there. Every car I have owned I have ordered from the factory through a dealership. It's simple. Just walk in, say you want a car to order. Bring with you a printout or a list of what you want to order. Sit with the salesman and build your car together on the computer. Before placing the order, get a printout, go over it carefully to make sure everything you want is listed and nothing has been added that you don't want. If all is good, place the order, leave a small deposit and come back in 4-8 weeks to get your brand new car. Before accepting the car, go over it carefully with your printout to make sure it's your car with all the options you ordered, color, trim, etc. If everything is good, make a fair margin (profit) to the dealer for placing the order, do a little paperwork and that's it. An ordered car bears no cost to the dealership. There are no overhead expenses, no interest paid to the bank, there's no regional ad fees, no insurance, etc, etc. Your car did not exist prior to arriving therefore it bears no cost to the dealership. The dealer cannot add anything to the car that you did not ordered or you have the right to reject the car. They will try to talk you into buying extras that they will install, but just say, no. Most dealerships don't like ordering cars for customers. It makes no money for them other than the holdback percentage that automakers pay the dealer for the sale. But, oh well.

Mutley, what you said might be the most useful thing on the entire internet regarding buying a car. I went to some Toyota and Honda dealerships over the last week and no matter how many times I mentioned pre-ordering a vehicle, they kept showing me when the cars are due to arrive - that is despite the fact that I said I wont need a car for a few more months. Now I get it - they do not want to order a car unless you won't budge because they want to tag on extras when you lock in something that is in transit. Ordering in advance, you can tell them what you want. I kept wondering why they would ONLY talk about new shipments and what vehicles were arriving when I told them I can wait and just order a car.

@@richardtausch2 You have experienced first hand the dealer's dislike in placing orders for custom made cars. They make no money in custom made orders. They rather sell you a car in stock that bears all the costs that comes with it so they can maximize their profits. They will give you a 1001 excuses to steer you away from ordering a car. But if you got the money reserved and you're willing to wait, stick to your guns and get the car of your dreams your way! Good luck!

I had this experience. They tried to add 2.5k+ of fees (Lithia Hyundai of Fresno) for a used Subaru with well over 100k miles on it and did the whole let's pressure this dumb chick into buying today. I noped the ---- out of there after getting tired of them wasting my time and found a car with fewer miles for much cheaper and with no pressure to buy right then. Now it did have some mechanical issues that popped up after a few months and their mechanic was absolutely useless (even though they said they provided a "50-50 warranty" on the car) but given what I have heard from other buyers that is pretty par for the course at a lot of places that sell used cars.

I agree with everything you mentioned, except the tire and wheel protection. That depends on the car you buy and the location where you are driving. When I bought my BMW 335D in 2010, the dealer told me that if there is anything I should get it is the tire and wheel protection. I live in NYC where tires and rims don’t last very long. The tire and rim policy was $1200. It was the best thing I could have done. I went through over $3000 in rims and tires, which BMW replaced for free inclusive of labor. The only thing the policy did not cover was normal wear and tear. It did cover everything else, including road hazards like potholes and punctures from nails and screws which is exactly what happened.

The insurance fought it saying the vehicle didn’t have the chrome rims on the build sheet. I found the moroney sticker where it showed that there was the chrome package and they covered the price of the rim and labor to uninstall and reinstall tire. Saved me over $1k so far. Bought a 2021 Bronco back in December. I already put my deposit of $1100 and waited a year and half for the suv and i went to the dealership to purchase within 24hrs of it arriving and they had literally put all 5 things on this video list on my suv without my permission. I told them I custom made my suv and did not approve these changes and you have over a year to tell me you were going to add this stuff on here. They told me they do it to all their vechicles automatically. I said well that dumb bc your wasting your money by doing without people permission bc I am not paying for it. They tried for 30mins to ask me what portion of the $4000 add on would I be willing to pay for. I said I am already spending 49k and I budgeted for that amount, plus I called 4 months ago asking what would be my final price so I can start getting my finance ready and yall told me 49k. So honor your word and give me my suv before I make another KZread video about my Bronco experience. That did the trick and I got it for 49k. Fast forward 6 months and I already sold it about a week ago bc I flipped it and made a sweet profit.

When we got to the down payment and I reviewed the items, I saw a secure-guard registration program (anti-theft tracing). I asked them to remove the $199 charge, and they told me that Budds Subaru will not remove it and it's part of the sale. No negotiation was possible on the sale price of the vehicle. Instead, I had a smart remark, "you're getting a car that's the deal." What to do when they don't want to take the fee do you cave in or walk away

Im going through the exact same thing right now looking for a Subaru Crosstrek. Dealerships are adding taxes and fees that don't even exist on CarHelpCorners videos. Crazy made up crap! Easy answer is request an OUT THE DOOR COST, tell them you want the final price after ALL FEES AND TAXES. Don't ever waste your time and go into the dealership. They will keep you there for hours trying to scam you. Get the quote on line and when they add on crap tell them to re-write the quote with it removed. Last week I did this at several dealers looking for a Honda ATV. They were pulling the same as car dealerships. They would give an OTD price but with made up stuff. They wouldnt take it off so I said "No thanks, let some other sucker fall for that" and kept looking. FInally found a dealer that was fair and had in stock what I wanted. Picked up the ATV the next day. Don't get scammed!
