5 BIG Misconceptions on Vacuum Sealing

There are many rumors out there on what is safe and not safe to vacuum seal. Just because others have tried something and didn’t get sick doesn’t mean it’s safe. Today Deb tackles 5 of the most common misconceptions of using a vacuum sealer to preserve food.

I got my sealer from Costco years ago and it came with the jar sealer and bottle plug so I lucked out. I don’t buy generic products for my appliances…9 times out of 10 it’s money wasted so a couple bucks extra up front pays off. Great video!

I use a hand held sealer for my jars and it works Great, better than the food saver. In my opinion I have lost confidence in Food Saver. I suppose it's cheap manufacturing as well as Presto.

Manufacturers have cut corners across the board the last few years. I got my FS about 10 years ago and it is awesome but later models I’m not too sure about so hopefully I won’t have to take that risk. Like sewing machines - older models with mostly metal, made in Japan or Germany are wonderful. The new ones from China are mostly plastic and expensive door stops. My machines are over 30 yo and still going strong 😊

This video made me feel better about all my stuff I have vacuum sealed..... One thing we learned; you can't vacuum seal any cereal with chocolate in them for long term, they go rancid in a year.... now the "Honey nut Cheerio's and Fruit loops were just as good as the day we packed them into mylar bags and sealed them. Hope you had a great Thanksgiving....Thank you.

Well dry Celerals,, when repacked and vac sealed. You still want to consider the out of date or best by... from the manufacturer. You are NOT, resetting the lifespan of the product. It might stay fresher and crispy if u re- seal as you consume out of it. But dry stuff will lose flavor integrity. A personal experience with me, was with an Oatmeal container. Factory sealed. But i had it for too long. The product looked fine. But the taste wasnt the same once i cook it. So for certain things. Consider the factory date. That doesnt change just cuz u reseal or vac seal. [ But yes, for sure u can preserve its crispyness and taste like chips. Compared to just folding the factory bag. Just consume the profuct before their factory date is past due. Cooking fresh and canning, vac sealing.. is different. Cuz u know when u made that profuct fresh. And you can date it from the cooking- vaccuming date.

That pop corn jar is overfilled. I have a big foodsaver and love it but not able to keep it on my small counter. I did buy this smaller one this week and will experiment. Want for short term.

Deb,great review as usual.I have the small hand held sealer besides the big one from Bass Pro.Have told be careful with the hand held one because the tip can get stuck if pushed in too hard and can break off trying to remove it.Happened to me! Also,I’m lucky to have a set of the vacuum canisters that were available years ago and they’re still working fine.Love the bowl you mixed the cereal in.Dose it come with a lid?Nice

Thanks! Good point on the handheld one. I’ll be careful for sure! Yes, that bowl comes with a lid. It’s a three piece set I bought about 5 years ago at Walmart. That’s the biggest bowl. I use it constantly plus the lids latch on. Thanks for your comments!

My little handheld is more powerful than your brand. It’s worked so well that my seals have never broken on their own. I’m happy with it. It will extend the shelf life of my products more than paper bags or even original packaging with ziplocks. My rechargeable Handheld Food Saver is great, however the bags have failed often. Thanks for your input though.

Hahaha. How do you know yours is more powerful? For long term storage (5 years or more) I use my FoodSaver 5200. In 13 or more years I’ve never had a false seal.

you may be right, but with each of the the smaller vacumn sealer, it clearly states not to put the food above the ring at the spot the where the jar starts to curve.

I researched a lot before I bought my FoodSaver to make sure it would work with the jar attachments. Is yours a FoodSaver? If so it needs a port. Not all of them have that. The jar sealer attachments I bought are the official FoodSaver ones so I knew they’d fit.

If you used a lid for canning I heard it cannot be used again for canning. But can it be used for sealing? of will it fail have you tried this? A test for how much vacuum you can pull on each machine is to inflate a small balloon and place it inside the jar. Then compare the size after each seal test. Marshmallow kinda work too.

That is an awesome idea! I’ll try it. I separate my lids, so I don’t know. I can my foods and toss the lid. But with vacuum sealed I store them to reuse over and over again.

Depends on your sealer. Many of them can’t seal liquids or it’ll be sucked into the machine and ruined. My foodsaver has a marinate option for liquids.

@JustDoSomethingHomestead I see. Maybe it also depends on the thickness. I do it fairly concentrated and add water when I use it. I also leave about 2 cm at the top of the jar. But my sealer is also a smaller one.

I went back to see what they were talking about. You did in fact use 2 different positions with your fingers on the 2 different jars. The first one you clearly used your fingerNAILS to pry it open. The second jar you used fingerTIPS but did not apply your nails. I was curious because I have the same handheld vacuum sealer & I have not had an issue with the seals breaking. I don’t let it sit for 3 min. I let it go until the unit stops, then I take it off & check the seal before putting it into the pantry or fridge
