If you move to any area in Portugal or in any country, you should learn the local language and not the other way around .

If you love Nature, good weather and relaxing, Alentejo is the choice. I recently moved to Alentejo and I'm super happy, specially because I love nature and not so much crowds. There is something magical in Alentejo, hard to describe. It changed me to a better and happier person. People here are amazingly helpful, friendly and relaxed. The weather is fantastic most of the year but in the peak of winter and summer we get uncomfortable temperatures but never last too many days. Spring here it's a paradise. and much, much more. Recommended.

I would add Madeira Island as one of the best places to live.

I like the two places we might want to avoid! In Monsantos I would buy a donkey to get me home after a large lunch!! ❤

Enjoyed your video and your assessment of some of the options that one has when choosing a place to live. Ofcourse, it all comes down to what one is looking for. I opted for Lagos for the reasons you spoke of. Looking forward to checking out eastern Algarve in January. Enjoy!

Outstanding ignorance around the beauty of Alentejo. If you want to experience typical Portuguese life and meet some of the kindest people (locals not American expats) then Alentejo will provide this. Keep your negative viewpoints to yourself. Very happy living in Alentejo region.

Monsanto is not a "xisto" village! in fact is a granitic one; Piodão is a "xisto" village (one of the most known in PT).

Firstly, I would recommend that anyone moving to another country LEARN the language, others do not have to learn English and facilitate expats. Secondly, Cascais and Sintra are NOT Lisbon, they are individual towns that are close to the capital.... I was staggered by some of some these comments, many expats do not wish to live with other expats, so your comments re the Alentejo and Monsanto were just pathetic.

You cannot compare cities like Porto or Lisbon to a village like Monsanto, how many villages in the States have a hospital or supermarket? Also, there are ex pats living there and nearby. Not sure how you did your research but maybe try harder.

You are totally wrong about Alentejo. In what bases have you set comments about one of the most beautiful and rich areas of the country ?! Alentejo is not only Evora, many other places like Estremoz, de Monsaraz, Elvas, are just beautiful and so special. Many foreigners have chosen Alentejo precisely for being extremely safe, best food, wine and the people is unique in the sense of being so welcome, simple and down to earth. Investigate more before you comment about this wonderful region of Portugal

I really DID not like why you point 2 places for not living there ( and I live in the Algarve so not in Alentejo and not in Monsanto to be clear) These are places that many people will look for instead, Portugal is widely inhabited for most of the Country except the coast. Inland is empty. But you cannot compare Lisbon or Porto where, by the way, not many people speaks English, I hive lived 2 years in the North! to Alentejo, 2 such different why of life. Of course this is your opinion and this is mine. And if one want to live here should learn portugese to integrate otherwise it will be only in an English spoken community called Expat Ball.

Some people like myself can't learn another language. It's definitely not from lack of trying, I just can't retain any new information due to a lack of short term memory issues. English is the one language that's almost universally spoken.

If you’re a US citizens living in Portugal, respecting 100% of their culture is a must. That falls in the definition of language and traditions. Just because you are saving dollars to stretch your retirement doesn’t mean you should exploit another country. Yes your dollar is helping their current economy, however, have you considered the true impact you have on the locals?

Are expats able to find jobs? I would need a part time job in order to move there.
