Hiking in Sardinia. We traveled to Italy on a road trip and hiked the 5 best trails in Sardinia (Sardegna), a Mediterranean island in Southern Europe. In order to have a mix of different types of hiking trails, we selected this list to get the the maximum variety for our first-time visit of the Italian island. They showcase the wild and naked nature of Sardinia.
During our research for this Sardinia travel guide, we accidentally stumbled upon a real hidden gem that features the wreck of airplane Douglas DC-9-32 which hit the mountain range of Monte Conca d'Oru in 1979. The name for the mountain ironically is - Golden Basin, but it should be called "Mountain of Death". All 31 occupants were killed that day, and the debris of the plan still lays there. It was a humbling a paradoxical experience, seeing the stunningly beautiful landscape and the fingerprints of death within. To us, it's the most underrated hike in Sardinia, and no hiking or trekking reviews feature this spot. But if you come to this pilgrimage place, please show respect. It's a sad chapter in the late history of Sardinia.
