Excellent picks. Hope to see more of this kind of content. I'm crazy for compact fixed blades. Saves room in the pocket, and none of the drawbacks of folding knives. I still love folders, but there's no substitute for an all around fixed blade.

Great video! Thank you sir! I can really appreciate a well made American knife. Good to see you representing local small NC business! My dad and younger brother spent some time there in the Corps at Camp Lejeune and MCAS Cherry Point! I hear other branches of the military are there but I don't recall their post / base names... guess I am a bit biased.

This is the first of your videos to show up in my feed. I live in Texas now, but I lived near Zirconia NC for 9 years, 15 years in Henderson County. Spent 9 winters living in a barn on the south side of a mountain on 100+ acres in a hardwood forest. My daughter graduated college in Boone so I’m very familiar with that area too. Beautiful mountains and great people. I liked every one of the knives you showed here. That almost never happens. This video earned my subscription because of that. 👍🏼👍🏼 Being in Texas, I edc a TOPS Prather War Bowie. Sometimes I’ll carry a TOPS Brakimo. (I like TOPS and the guys that run the company, Craig and Leo, are my friends). I make “survival” kits based around a knife, or a water container. I recently became interested in neck knives. And I’m very interested in that Winkler SD2. And really interested in checking out the Primitive Woodsman. Does he make something like the pocket tanto in a drop point? Thanks for this video. I look forward to doing business with Ridgerunner Blades in the future.

@@ridgerunnerblades Good video but please Do not compare Hoback with Spartan Blades! It isn't about where the blade is made but the ethics behind the maker. Also Spartan Blades do not make knives in China, Taiwan is not China. Hoback was busted selling Chinese made knives under the impression of them being USA made. Spartan Blades should not be mentioned in the same sentence with that POS. I'm not just commenting. I don't buy Chinese built knives and I was taken for $575 for USA advertised Hoback Husky. I was lucky and I was able to dump it for a USA made Medford product.

Let me help you out here. The clip used on the Winkler sheaths is a DCC clip made by Discreet Carry Concepts. Ulticlips are sharp as heck and are clunky rust buckets and everyone knows DCC is the best on the market which is why Winkler and every other serious company uses them. You should really know this if you are going to be talking about Winkler blades in that manner. Other than that, good videos.

National Sales Account MGR here for a Tool Steel and Stainless mill. My opinion, a knife is only as good as it's steel. If you're going the stainless route, 440C needs to be your choice at the low end.....if you're going Tool Steel it must be D2 on the low end. Carbon steel is junk plain and simple. Low hardness, low edge retention, low wear resistance due to V, Cr, and Mo content. Obviously you get into the high end "super high speeds" and powder metals that Crucible engineered in the 70's hence the name "CPM" but now Carpenter Technologies has the rights to CPM. So want a cheap knife, go D2 or 440C. Want a great blade look for high alloy CPM.

I'm sorry, but like most, I take a salesman's opinion with a grain of salt. As carbon steels have been proven by hundreds if not thousands of people that actually use their knives daily in real world use, I hardly think they are junk. Every steel has its advantages and disadvantages. Choose accordingly.

@@donaldroehrig7817 it’s not an opinion bud it’s fact. Tell you what how about on Monday you call around and price some 1095 carbon steel. Then call around and price some D2, M2, 440C, CPM10v or any other high alloy CPM grades. Then come back and let me know what you find. Better yet I just named some grades, do your own research. So back to my original statement Carbon steel is junk steel. It has low Alloy content look it up. Low corrosion resistance, low hardness, low strength, high chance of chipping, low edge Retention… why? No alloy that’s why.

@@dr.h9309 Typical salesman pitch, bud. Because it costs less, it's junk. I deal with salesman and marketing people everyday. Here's a better sales pitch...instead of calling someone trying to sell an item, call the people that actually use them. I'm not saying the super steels don't have a place, but they are not the be all end all that the marketing people want you to believe.

  • @dr.h9309

@@donaldroehrig7817 you’re obviously not reading my comments because I have plenty of reasons why the steel is far less superior. Did you not read the alloys I mentioned and their uses in steel? It’s fine that you don’t understand steel chemistry and the role that certain alloys play in steel making. It’s also fine that you like carbon steel blades. Make two beautiful knives, one from crap steel and one from high end steel… sit them on a table and you will not tell the difference. The purpose of my comment is towards this video. This video is about the best EDC knife. That mean something you carry everyday. Something you’re using to pry with, cut with probably use as a hammer, a screwdriver, something you’re going to beat the heck out of. And for that purpose I suggest, as a steel professional higher end tool steel or stainless. It’s not a sales tactic or mere opinion. Stainless and high end super high speed tool steel is far superior in performance because of its alloy content…. Not because it’s more expensive. The only thing 1095 or other Carbon steels have going for them is they are easy to sharpen but this is because they're soft on the HRc scale and have no wear resistant properties. They need to be easy to sharpen...you'll be doing a lot of that. You have 5 main elements in good knife steel and they all serve a purpose. That's Mo (Molybdenum) Ni ( Nickel), V (Vanadium) Cr (Chromium), C (Carbon). Carbon allows you to heat treat higher, Cr allows toughness and corrosion resistance, Nickel allows allows toughness and strength, Vanadium allows wear resistant and Moly allows high heat resistance should something be exposed to heat it will not lose its temper or austenitic properties. It's also ok for someone to have more knowledge than you on certain topics...instead of trying to be that guy just learn something. Again this is all public information feel free to check me....

@@dr.h9309 I have read everything you have wrote, and you are still wrong. I'm not disputing that some alloys are better at some characteristics, but they are not better at all characteristics. For you to make a blanket statement saying that all carbon steels are inferior proves that you are not taking all of the scientific information and applying accordingly. You can spew all the data you want, but it only reinforces my belief and the belief of the rest of the knife users, makers, manufacturers, and real metallurgists that super steels and alloys are not always the best for every application.
