5 Amps that didn't reach the channel (terrible to wonderful)

Музыка

There are 5/6 amps that I loved and hated that never reached the channel with a dedicated video for various reasons. In this episode we briefly explore these, there main characteristics and the story behind them.
Errata Corrige: The Nefesh Ii amplifier has a retail price of €9000 (and NOT€20k)

Guido, I enjoyed your channel for a long time and this is the first time I write to you. You should try the David Berning ZH-270 power am. It is an OTL amp with a very different approach. It is rated at 70 watts per channel but it actually produces much more with 8 ohms. Incredibly stable with lots of control and detail. This is an older design from David but I have not heard anything approaching it and I have heard many tube and transistor designs. In fact I have a pair of Artemis Labs mono power amps with very special and expensive NOS tubes that cannot touch the Berning ZH-270 amp. The newer Berning amps are great also but very, very expensive. Love your videos. Keep the good work.

@@geo.037 I traded a 300B SET integrated from Line Magnetic for a PrimaLuna Dialogue Premium last summer because I wanted more dynamism and authority in the low end for my Cornwalls. I expected to lose the magical midrange and presence of the SET, and I did, but definitely got what I was looking for in low-end control and didn't find anything to object to in the mids/treble. I recently swapped the EL34 for KT88 and am impressed by how much more 'easeful' and 'airy' the presentation of the KT88's are. The EL34 are a bit 'warmer' in the midrange but also sound more congested. The KT88 kick harder in the low-end, and I prefer the treble presentation I'm hearing. It's nice to have the flexibility as neither choice is 'wrong' but do make a significant difference in the presentation.

I thought the Primaluna was all hype until I tried it in my lounge with Proac’s. Yes I sold a more expensive amp for the Primaluna evo400. It takes a bit of trial and error to get it right. The gain valves make a significant difference. At the end of the day the sound signature must be to our personal desire, and somebody else could just like it different. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

You have the CD35 of them when I remember right. So it was surprising for me that you didn't try one of their big collection of tube power amplifiers. Haven't you thought of them or have you already listened to Ayon in the past and due to that knew that their tube amps are not for you? 🐹

I have had that avi s21mi integrated , and s21mc CD player , That amp is really hifi , only it depends on the speakers you do connect to it , Connected Also to avi loudspeakers was one of the most transparant , detailed sounds i have ever heard , with a pair of Sonus faber cremona auditor was not the same story ( despite sounding very good) , The avi s21mc CD player , is for me not one of the best , but the best CD player I have ever had , independent of the price , it’s a shame that avi is out of business . I compared this little midi monster with some big brand CD players at the time, and the avi was the very best balanced of the bunch ….for a mile !

Hey Guido. Great vid. I think people may get worried about having the next best new amplifier, when the technology hasn’t changed much in years. I’d personally rather buy an older amp and either upgrade or restore it if need be. If there’s something I’ve learned throughout the years of owning many different topologies of amps, is that the circuit itself has more bearing on the performance, and that oftentimes the simpler ones tend to sound “better”. Of course, quality parts can make a difference as well, but an amp needs to be a good match for your speakers and synergy with the rest of one’s system. That’s how we’re able to find out our preferences. Thanks, Guido.

Find some Sylvania 7027A ( tall boys ) for your MAC........ Best tube amps make the best SS amps only to come close , tghis privolege does not apply to the majority of modern current production ( commercial ) tube amplifiers. No amp is perfect but when you realy enjoy one ........stick with it , the mAc is one of the examples made to enjoynthe emotions of music.......do not fall for re-issues of vintage amps ! Good amps ( and synergy in the ystem ) will always let you foirget the electronics of you set up.....and you won't analyze the music as to many audiophile do and compare components to components eternaly from beguiling brands, that will become like walking on the road of audiophile hell..

To dispell the "6c33c in Migs" legend - which was never reliably confirmed - the 6C33C was and is a regulator tube. It was not rated for avionics with their g-forces, just like the 300B. And, just like the 300B, it's high cost precluded it's wide use. But, nevertheless, it was occasionally used in civilian power supplies and broadcast amps and appeared in unclassified, public literature.
