    I am a real motorcycle noobie and been drooling over Janus motorcycles for about 4 years till I finally took the driver safety class and took order of the 450 which was delivered last week. It’s def a niche of nostalgia but where else are you going to get hand made small qty builds for that price from an established motorcycle company? It’s like owning a Time Machine that has a bullet proof enduro engine.

    @@JosepBlas Josep: Thought I'd step in here. I run the Halcyon 250, and if I had the extra funds, I wouldn't hesitate to buy the 450. They are different experiences. The 250 is really nimble around town. When it is sitting still or parked, it's fun since so many people ask me about it. When it is moving, it is more enjoyable overall than the other bikes I owned. The company, unlike any other motorcycle company I know, talks directly to customers. I just called today with a question on a particular part's paint. Finally, learning how to perform all the service on the bike has made me a better biker since I know that everything is kept within specs.

    I think they're nice but 15k for a 450? And motor is a honda Chinese clone. Not saying they're not reliable. As an American made motorcycle and how a big chunk of Americans associate Chinese with junk. You think they would've sourced there motors from somewhere else.

    I own a Janus 250 Halcyon and have put thousands of miles on it (overall, very reliable). Easy to work on, and the company encourages, though does not require, owners to do so (and it doesn't violate the warranty). The website shows how many parts are US-made (the percentage is higher than at least many Harleys). There are videos by one of the founders on why the engine was chosen--basically, no small-displacement engine made in the United States was appropriate. I can tell you that the engine here is very well-made, and once broken in is very difficult to break. Sure, one is buying the aesthetic, but I also am supporting an American company--and the employees really do have the values they articulate. Last, the bike is really fun to drive, which I do virtually every day. Jeff

    I went and took a factory tour at Janus back in February. Very cool bikes, yes they have a Chinese Honda clone motor, but nearly everything else is made in house or from local machine shops. Very high build quality! I was really impressed, and one day I’d love to have one. Definitely a niche market for their bikes though.

    Janus certainly seem to be a popular wish list. I too love that extremely old school look. But at $14,000 for a 450, no phuking way. Picked up a 1979 honda cm400t just before winter. $1200. Just about back on the road as a brat tracker all up for less than 2k. So in the end bought myself a motorcycle and saved myself 12k.

    I love that everyone's only complaint that Janus is single cylinder, making it less of motorcycle than their desires. Demanding a brand with niche marketing to put in engine that the more popular brand than they can be to compete, will be fastest way to kill it. So really everyone just wants a Harley? Or consider that for those who wants something actually different? Heh, some concept, lol

    I still get a kick out of my single cylinder 390 Duke. They're over $6k now and the only reason they're that cheap is mass production using cheap labour in India. It completely dig that Janus are hand made in the US, and more art than plebian mode of transportation. It's a different kind of fun from a Duke 390 or Z400, but still valid.

    The thing about Janus is that their bikes mostly resemble old V-twins to most people, like the Brough Superior SS100. Naturally, most people can't afford a real SS100 so they wish Janus would make a V-twin bike. Being that they can be optioned for over 15k, I can understand the thinking that a Chinese-sourced thumper isn't enough. Specially when the "Rolls-Royce of motorcycles", the SS100, cost 10.3k (adjusted for inflation) and was also hand built while being the fastest bike of its time. Hand built quality or not, 15k is a lot to ask for a bike that barely reaches highway speeds.

  • @SirOsisofLiver

    @SirOsisofLiver

    Жыл бұрын

    @@Topher7527 Other than having two wheels, it doesn't bear much resemblance at all to a Brough, and certainly to an SS100. It's much closer to something like a 1925 Norton, BSA or AJS single. A hand-built, American made, replica Brough would end up being a hell of a lot more expensive than this.

    There’s no way I would buy a Janus. But I do like the look of a Janus. I’m really familiar with the engine in one. It’s not exactly spectacular. They just like weird fuckin bikes.

    I own a Cleveland CycleWerks bike, called Tha Heist-Yes, they spelled it all edgy like that. It's a 125cc hardtail chopper that only costs a few grand new... Turns out to have been a good purchase, it's too cheap for Yammie to roast! Seriously though, the fact that a company in and named Cleveland has a hardtail... Cleveland is made of potholes and cracks in the asphalt, riding this thing anywhere in the city is like playing Temple Run in real life, and you feel like a badass for surviving a ride! It's the worst, most satisfying bike ever, and easy to repair and modify, which is the point-it's a bottom-dollar chopper!

    I've actually seen a Janus and while too low-powered for my needs, they have that cool 'Silent Gray Fellow' early motorcycle vibe, and they are extremely well-made. Gotta give them that, however the single cylinder thing might work for British nostalgia fans (see new BSA Gold Star thumper), I wouldn't consider a Janus unless it had a vee-twin.

    Do you own an iPhone? LCD tv? I'm positive about 90% of the stuff you own are made in China. I will say this to, and it is a very harsh and unfortunate situation. 250CCS IS JUST NOT ENOUGH DISPLACEMENT. I have several videos on my channel. You can see where it drops to under 40 mph trying cross a mountain. however in a big city, it would be a brilliant motorcycle to have. The CG based Honda motor is Bulletproof. I've owned also a Chinese dirt bike with the same motor and it is fantastic. Those little Chinese clones just are not enough on the highway.

    Actually, on a lot of Chinese bikes everything is junk except the engine. The engines are often just fine because they are just older Honda motors. The Chinese just buy the rights to manufacture an older Honda motor and they just make it using the blueprints for it that Honda did. So if Janus only uses the Chinese motor and makes everything else then it should be a good dependable bike. Yammie is just giving a knee jerk reaction like he so often does.

    My dad actually refuses to ride any Harley newer than the AMF Harley’s, he loves them, and still has the two he bought new in the 70’s. I can attest that they are not nearly as bad as a lot of people say, people that bad mouth the AMF bikes have probably never even ridden one. They just go off what they’ve been told. I’ve only ridden them myself a handful of times, but every time I do, I can feel the quality of the American steel in those bikes, it’s hard to explain but I don’t get the same feeling from my modern bikes. His shovelhead didn’t start leaking oil until the early 90’s which is pretty good for how much he’s ridden it, (probably had around 60k miles at that time) and his ironhead sportster I think he said only started leaking oil late 90’s. The only real problem I’ve seen while riding with him, is occasionally something will vibrate loose, and fall off, and I’ll have to turn around to go retrieve it. To be fair though periodically checking torque on fasteners is part of the maintenance on a motorcycle, especially a HD that vibrates.
