    Finally a video of how to fix the hemi camshaft lifter problem.THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!! My nephew just spent $4500 four months ago for the stealership to go back with the same china made lifters and cam. He drove it to my house today saying it was missing like crazy. I put my scanner on it; misfire on 1&3. I haven't pulled the valve cover yet to see if cam lobes are toast, but I believe they are. He has only put 11,000 miles on it since they did the job. Told him if I was younger I would do what you are doing, but at 71 I ain't got it in me. Thanks again!!!

    Mine is a 2008 1500 with the 5.7, coming up on 185,000 miles. I am the original owner and love the truck. Just purchased a new 2019 with the 6.4. Had a couple of the old guys back in the day tell me that you want to do the first oil change before 2000 miles to remove any metal dust etc... from the break in period or if anything wasn’t completely flushed out when the engine was assembled. Did the first oil change at 2000 miles and switched over to full synthetic oil at about 35,000 miles. Always have done a short warmup after it drops from high idle and generally don’t let it sit idling for long periods of time. Within the last 20,000 miles or so it will occasionally have a slight tick on startup if the truck has been sitting for several days. This has been my primary tow vehicle and has probably 80/20 highway to city driving. Firmly believe that doing the first oil change early and switching over to full synthetic is the way to go on any engine. Because of the amount of highway driving vs city, I push the oil changes generally to 6,000 miles. Can’t complain about this truck at all. Oil changes, air filters, brakes and tires in 185,000 miles.... if that’s what some people consider junk then I’ll take it all day long.

    Here is another thing to consider. During engine breakin, thousands of unfiltered (because they are so small) tiny pieces of metal are washed through the roller camshaft. All the way until the owner is told it needs a change, by a electronic meter! Sometimes 10,000 miles! These micro pieces of metal, come off the cylinder walls and rings as they break in. Get them out of your engine, after 3,000 miles. Ram has lowered the valve spring pressure on all its newer 5.7. Hopefully this will do the job also.

    So basically change oil every 3,000 miles or at the very least the first 3,000 miles? I've heard of some dudes doing first 500 miles then again at 3,000 to avoid metals getting into places it shouldn't.

  • @davidleslie949

    @davidleslie949

    7 ай бұрын

    Those small particles that you're imagining if they get past the oil filter they definitely won't get past the magnet at the bottom in the oil pan. That's of course if an aftermarket drain plug with a magnet was installed in the oil pan or a magnet itself could've been installed by a HEMI KNOWLEDGABLE PERSON TO COLLECT DEFINE PIECES OF IRON, NICKEL & COBALT which are the only 3 known ferrous metals to exist on earth. Another not so effective way would be to stick a large earth magnet on the side of the oil pan and then when it was time to do, I know you'll change or I know oil pan gasket, or the oil pump. When the pan comes down, he would have any small metal particles stuck to that magnet as long as it didn't fall off and as long as it wasn't removed until the oil pan came down. I still don't know how effective the last method was when I do change my oil pump, which is what will give you more volume this is my opinion is the best way to be proactive in preventing the cam\lifter failure because of the fix displacement, gear, rotor type oil pump. Yes the hell cat oil pump is substituted instead of the OEM OIL PUMP WILL INCREASE THE AMOUNT OF OIL BY 12% WHICH DOESN'T SOUND LIKE MUCH BY 12% MORE THAN WHAT GETS TO THE TOP OF THE ENGINE WILL LIKELY SAVE A LOT OF MONEY IN THE END FOR A $200 PART.

  • @davidleslie949

    @davidleslie949

    @@MrComputerCoder WELL SAID as this is the best practice in preventative we are in tear by being proactive by changing your oil at no more than 5000 miles yes I synthetic oil is used or 3000 miles if I conventional oil is used. This is a proven method to protect any engine, but more so for the hemi 5.7 L. Furthermore, if you wanted to all but 100% guarantee this problem from happening to your engine would be to run 100 % Full synthetic oil and on top of that do not idle the engine for more than 10 to 15 minutes at one time. Lastly, and the most important of the three would be to replace your oil pump with that over HELLCAT HEMI OF ANY YEAR AND MODEL AS THEY ALL USE THE SAME OIL PUMP, WHICH HAPPENS TO BE A DIRECT BOLTON FIT FOR THE 5.7 L. YOU MAY HAVE TO SWAP THE PRESSURE RELIEF SPRING AS THE TENSION IS DIFFERENT. The other method would be to mess around with the 3 wire oil pressure sensor instead of getting a code which will occur when the new pump is installed. It will read incorrectly, but not really because it's doing its job because the oil pressure will be higher than 60 psi and it will throw a code but that's ok because you want a higher oil pressure which is caused by the new oil pump because it's a larger gear rotor I think 12% larger something like that. Changing the oil pump and using synthetic oil at the proper intervals while not idling the vehicle for more than 10 to 15 minutes at a time. I can almost guarantee a non-cam/lifter issue on a 5.7 L hemi.

  • @davidleslie949

    @davidleslie949

    Also, I forgot to mention never go by that 10,000 km because it's actually 10,000 km on a hemi in Canada that that little light tells you to. Keep in mind that stupid oil minder uses up to 30 different parameters to estimate when that oil is due to be changed. It's a complete gimmick, because if you look in your owners manual your driving patterns believe it or not will fall under severe driving conditions almost everyone falls under this category and then you'll see a different interval for your oil changes! You will be shocked, but you shouldn't be surprised because auto manufacturers have this in their owners manual, but the programming is set differently because they don't want that engine to last forever. How would you ever come back and buy another car or truck? It's not a well-known, but it is kind of a trade secret tho not documented that the engineers are asked how long will this engine last & will it make it until when the warranty ends? That's why you're oil minder takes so long. It should be half of that depending on if it's mainly highway driven or stop and go traffic, which falls under severe driving conditions. Which in that case your oil change intervals are almost cut in half.

    If it doesn't stop while driving its the valves, the exhaust manifold has two different metals bonded to surface. I don't know if that causes the bolts to break or just a less serious tic Back when Dodge was built by Dodge my work vans sitting overnight would seep a little oil around the valve seats. I would get a little puff of smoke when starting, and thats it. I never used much oil, but checked them regularly. I would buy used work trucks, and never had a premature fail. One van blew a head gasket after 350,000 miles I paid 500 bucks for that van, and I put on 100,000 miles myself. the only work I ever did to it was change the freeze plugs. I am a Mopar Guy, but needed a van this year ended up with a 6.0 liter GMC. Not liking the six cylinder mix breeds.

    It’s a design flaw. The cam is starving for oil. New cam will fix it but the problem will continue. When you look at the lifter, you’ll see the burnt side indicating lack of oil. Someone should invent a way to get the oil to the cam. Idle will increase the problem.

    It ins't really the lifter that is the problem. It is in the methodology or oil starvation at low engine idle speed. There is no direct head lubrication pathways from the pump assembly, instead relying on the Crank Sling method of oil deployment which suffers greatly at idle. Bad Engineering design, not lifter design.

  • @anonimous2451

    @anonimous2451

    4 жыл бұрын

    @Bailey Hatfield The issue is NOT the lifters. The issue is the Low Oil Pressure at idle due to methodology of lubrication to lifters. The Ford spark plug issue was basically limited to 04-07 5.4 L engines. But that is not the only problem Ford has designed. The Focus RS blowing heads is far worse and also late 90's mustangs had cooling issues with the rear cylinders that seems to overtly affect the GT350 engines too. Though Ford has denied that one. 2013-2014 GT500 5.8 L engines are a time bomb as well.

    The HELLCAT Lifters that you'll be getting or already put in are the exact same part number of the ones you took off actually. The hellcat uses the same lifters as the 5.7 L HEMI ENGINE, NO DIFFERENT THAN THE 6.2 L. I'm sure you probably figured that out by now but I'm just watching this video today. The PERFORMANCE HELLCAT CAM KIT YOU PUT IN IS JUST A STANDARD OEM HYDRAULIC, RELIABLE IF TREATED PROPERLY AND NOT ABUSED OEM HYDRAULIC LIFTERS. If you did remove the MDS, which I'm guessing you did because it says that in the title? The MDS has nothing to do with that cam/lifter failure. hopefully you installed what is important is a new hellcat oil pump which will give you 12% more volume eliminating the lack of lubrication at both ends of the camshaft, where the problem is due to lack of lubrication because of the length of the intake and exhaust valves being higher up than the previous generation splash oil lubricated cam/lifter. Chrysler failed to install a larger OEM OIL PUMP, BUT THEY DIDN'T FAIL TO YOU ON THE HELLCAT ENGINES WHICH DON'T HAVE NEARLY THE PROBLEMS A 5.7L does. Enjoy the video because I'll be doing something like that soon. I'm sure though I have 120,000 miles on my vehicle. The majority of the miles were highway driven not to mention I used to 100% synthetic engine oil which I only went over the 8000 mile mark once. I'm in Canada, so I'm having trouble converting the numbers exactly but yeah and then I started adding a zinc oil supplement to my motor, in order to help lubricate and prevent wear on the camshaft. It's strictly an engineering problem that was overseen or intentional likely overseen by the CHRYSLER ENGINEERS.

    Honest question for you 'good' home mechanics out there: I have the chance to buy a 2011 Ram 1500 Laramie Quad Cab 4x4 with likely this issue. (the P0303) popped up recently, along with a drop in power. It has high mileage (208k miles, 335k km) but it's in quite good shape for it's age, with only minor cosmetic issues. Would it be worth replacing the cam/lifters and trying to resell for a profit, or is it too big of a project for a 'mid-level' home mechanic? My experience: I've done a couple head gasket repairs over the last 25 years, 1 or 2 timing belt/chains replacements, 2 or 3 water pumps, a half dozen alternators, and at least 50 oil changes. In short, I'm 'pretty good' but not a mechanic.... is this job more than I should take on?

    Brian It’s the detergents in the oil that break down causing a piece of sludge to seize the roller on the lifter which then wears away the camshaft.

    I have metal shavings in my filter but not in the pan as far as I can tell without having the pan off. I planned on doing AMS with the hellcat lifters and new oil pump. Do you think it'll be good or will I just need a new block? I noticed the tick about a week ago. Getting ready to start it this week.

    That is easily fixed by either Tow Mode (disables the ECO Mode or some newer models you can just hit the - button to disengage the ECO Mode, it's what I do every single time I get in the truck. And after every single restart...it's a bit of a PIA, but I hate the ECO Mode, don't give 2 Sheets about the cost of the gas. I f I couldn't afford the gas I wouldn't have bought the damn thing.

    I just got my 2013 2500 5.7L truck back from the Hemi Shop. I had Hemi tick start last Tuesday. My check engine light came on with a code for the oil pressure switch and also had a misfire on cylinder number 5. I checked the oil pressure on the dash and it only would go up to 31psi🤦🏽‍♂️. It ended up being a seized lifter at ate up my cam lobe. The shop replaced the cam lifters seals and other stuff I can’t remember and sent the heads off to get worked. No it runs better than when I bought it with 60k miles.
