4x4 PTO Driven Timber Trailer BUILD Ep.5 - Steel Frame Fabrication

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

4x4 PTO driven timber trailer build continues with steel frame fabrication etc.. Also cutting flanges on the homemade CNC plasma cutter for the adapters that connect the BMW differential and homemade tandem axle chain housing. Starting to fabricate a steel trailer frame with dual rails. Using the old big green angle grinder again while cutting parts outside which brings back good memories from the times I started doing steel work. The tandem axle chain housing and trailer frame get mocked up and the hydraulic crane base plate finds its place on the tow bar. The shape of the tow bar will change in future episodes due to the routing of the propshaft and the height of the hitch on my homemade UTV I'm gonna use for towing this trailer around. The trailer is taking shape! Pretty good! Stay tuned for future episodes!
Trailer specs:
* 28x11-14" tires & 14" rims
* 1450mm/57" wide; length and height - unknown
* tandem axles with homemade chain housings
* BMW E39 530D differential with 2.81 gearing (identical to the UTV diffs)
* hydraulic crane with a boom & grapple for easier log loading & handling
* independent hydraulic power pack
* radio controlled hydraulic winch on the boom
* load capacity - 1-1,5 metric tonne
Stay tuned for the next episode & thanks for watching!

    Where you are bolting to the box frame--- you should drill both sides and weld a small pipe through the middle. Your bolts will need to be longer and go all the way through the frame; but this way, you can snug the bolts down tightly and they will squeeze that pipe/ sleeve and you'll be using both sides of the box frame--- rather than clamping to only one side, which is just thin metal and will bend fairly easily... That sleeve keeps the two sides of the frame from smashing together as you tighten down the bolts.... You can't just bolt to one side of the frame like that --- it's too thin and too weak. With a center sleeve, you can use the full structure of the box frame and fully tighten down the bolts without crushing your sides together. You MUST put center sleeves inside your box frame-- it's the only way to make it strong.

    I'm REALLY impressed with this trailer! The hydraulic lift will be a big help. The balance on the drive boxes will be better with tires and wheels, but you'll still want the lifting loops for maintenance or breakage. Good job; well done!

  • @calholli

    I still think you need a clutch built into your drive line at the back of the buggy... You want to be able to disengage your trailer on the fly--- so in case the trailer starts pushing you around a corner wrong or over a log- or up a hill or something-- and starts to jackknife, you can just pull a simple hand clutch and let the trailer disengage for a second and drag behind you again to straighten out and re-correct. It would make it much more manageable in those rough situations.

  • @Aladinscave

    Will definitely need some sort of a clutch, otherwise stuff will brake especially with mismatched ratios …..

  • @calholli

    @calholli

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@Aladinscave It's not mismatched--- he's using the exact same diff that is on his buggy, and all the gears are 1:1 in his chain box. But you're right, It definitely needs a clutch; because if your buggy is slipping around with no traction and the trailer is still pushing you, it's going to jackknife you every time, especially going up a hill.

    From my experience running the plasma table at work (which can pierce 2" and cut up to 3" with an edge start) the closer you are to the maximum that it's able to cut the more slag or dross you're going to have. I'm not sure that's always the case but that's definitely been my experience.

    That is my experience with laser cutting, and I think it's for the same reason. The pressure of the cutting gas blows the molten metal out of the cut, but that pressure also vents horizontally through the already existing cut. So if the material is thick the pressure (or exit velocity) at the bottom of the material will not be high enough to eject all of the molten metal. Surface tension takes over and it balls up on the bottom. I haven't personally operated the laser cutting machines at my workplace, but I think you would ideally use different nozzle sizes for different material thicknesses.

    This is super cool, the crane I guess I did not see this option before. Either way its an impressive build. The wheel design can be used for any thing really. I could see this having 4 wheels each side and turn in to a machine by its self. Much like the track/amphibious machine you made. This design would be better than an argo along with it being way stronger and likely faster. Some form of automatic transmission with a diesel motor and a proper rear end would do wonders. With this design the unit can sit higher while still keep gravity lower. Pretty much can do 2 wheels like a skid steer, 3, 4, 5 or as many as you want.
