4x Quonset home-studio: 40 years of artistic simple living

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In the desert of Joshua Tree, Bobby Furst's home/studio/compound is an artistic wonderland built from 4 Quonset huts, 3 Airstream trailers, and a shipping container. When Furst left LA for the desert he erected one two-story 50' by 30' Quonset hut with a lofted bedroom and industrial kitchen and bathroom.
As his first build became more of a theater/concert space, First bought another kit and erected a second, third and fourth unit. Using just a friend or two and the help of a Genie Lift, he erected the building's arch by arch with just the simple bolt technology.

@@postedback , joshua tree is a wealthy people getaway retreat. it is in a busy area, I mean, it is not on the middle of nowhere. and it sits over a oasis, the whole yucca and coachella valley are oasis, and if I am not mistaken close to palm spring there are the biggest natural non-dam oasis in the world. so they get water from the underground rivers. the internet is very good because those 2 valleys are highly populated, especially the coachella one (with over 250k dwellers) and it is just 3 hours away from LA.

A true artist knows how to shape his environs. Walden is an example, so is Furst's home. But Furst has a command of physical space that's really exceptional. Wow. He pulls from so many disciplines (each with mastery) and then assembles the total space. In other words, his art has the context of his home and his home is an expression of his life. And it's open, walkable, inviting. So he's taken the last and final step of any great artist ( in my opinion ) of inviting in the local community for interaction. So? Who cares? Well, this is important when presenting art. It's the opposite of the 'gallery star artist with the genius concept art' we all loath because they're all ego. Anyway, really nice to see, thanks for the visit!

wow! great interview. I have been to Bobby's place a few times and am always so amazed. One thing I can never figure out is that all his STUFF is dust-free! I tease him about it. I want to know his secret. Great guy, great artist and I am honored to know him.

This is great. Quonset on top of containers is making lots of sense.

Just wow. I’m a self employed carpenter in New England. Just the concept of not having to deal with the moisture of my area. It’s an immense amount of time and space I don’t have to protect the few things I have let alone all the really kool things I’ve turned away because I have no place to store it. These buildings are so kool let alone wow you have used them. I’m green with envy.

I love how the video started and ended the same. With Bobby's keys jangling and their footsteps on the dirt.

What a unique gallery/home/workshop! I admit that I am a bit envious. He has more square footage than me. My home is also inside an industrial building. An efficiency apartment inside a pole barn on a rural setting. If he lived closer, I would stop by and do some trading of odd industrial stuff I’ve collected over the years. Thanks for sharing this with us!
