Ive been running a toggle switch shift 4L80 in my '80 3/4 ton for nearly a year now. Have a column shifter, so no floor stick option possible like you did hear. I absoluteIy LOVE it. Overdrive with bulletproof ruggedness. No worries like when I had a 700r4. I still have the temp gauge just to make sure shit stays cool on these 116 degree summer dayz. Next build will have an 4L80 also.

Scott, I'm starting into a '49 Chev rat rod truck project, I got a LY6 6L motor from a 2007 Chev truck... Plus I have a 4L80e from a '01 2500HD I'd love to do exactly what you've done to it. I'm sick of looking at wiring diagrams and talking to people who suggest getting the ECM reprogrammed with a van wiring harness to control the 4L80 or spending $$$$ on a specific standalone controller... I just want to be able to shift it when I want to shift it. That's it. Don't want toggle switches all over my dash, don't want computers... I want a shifter and a cable. Done. Do you think I could pick your brain a bit how you got this setup?

I don't understand why automatic transmissions weren't designed this way from the beginning. I used to think there was some sort of hydraulic pressure magic that determined when an auto transmission would shift. But then I found out that the gear shifts are ultimately caused by electrically activated solenoids! There's no reason these solenoids need to be controlled automatically by a computer. That's just how car manufacturers decided to set it up. They could just as easily have had "up" and "down" buttons on the steering wheel! I understand the reasoning behind using planetary gearsets and a torque converter. In heavy traffic, or intersections on steep hills, using a clutch can be a hassle or challenging for some. But why car makers chose to permanently remove the driver's ability to control shifting is beyond me.

I think it's because most people just want to put it in gear and go...that's not me, I want to be in control at all times when it shifts. There are many times I will shift at 7000 RPMs are higher and it's just not possible with a stock 4L80E.

+Scott Bruton I feel exactly the same about shifting control. To me, gear shifting is no different than braking, steering or throttle. It is another variable that determines how a vehicle will perform. The less control you have over any of these variables, the less you are actually 'driving' the vehicle. But you're probably right: most people care more about convenience than the specifics of a machine's performance. And I suppose the car makers' reasoning was that the customers who cared about performance would go with a stick & clutch anyway, so why bother putting the option of shift control in the automatics at all? From a business perspective, it makes sense, but I'm no business man. I prefer technological variety, not because it will make somebody rich, but because it's awesome. P.S. That's a pretty damn cool truck you've got there.

I have always owned standards, but I just a month ago bought a 2012 Ram 2500, with Hemi, and 6 speed bauto. Switching from 97 7.3 Power SDtroke diesel, I notied the horrible fuel consumtion. I found this video, by searching for a way to put it into 6th Gear when I'm going downhill. When I try to let off the gas and go downhill without using my gas pedal, the truck actually slows down, because it downshifts. I want to use my goddamn higher gears when I'm going downhill so I can roll further and save some fuel. I was wondering how the hell I could manually put it into 6th Gear, as I know that running it downhill in neutral will f*** it up. I'm going to have to look into seeing if this can be done on a modern truck. Thank you, great video..
