4L60E Part 1

My name is Brad Wilde I have been rebuilding automatic transmissions for 30 years. I was factory trained at college and ASE certified in transmissions. This video shows the proper way to disassemble the 4L60E and the valve body.

    I worked at a fine blanking warehouse as a press operator. I made the clutch plates for this transmission. We produced 4 different ones. I was surprised to see 3 of the ones that we made in this transmission. I have always wondered how they look inside of one. It wouldn’t surprise me if I was the one that produced the plates for this transmission. Very educational.

    Just an FYI I watched another video on how to tear down a 4L60E transmission and in the first less than 5 minutes you have done what the other guy did after removing the valve body. Your way is obviously the correct way as you don't at this point have to worry about 7 valve body ball bearings. Just an absolute pleasure to watch a mechanic who knows what he is about instead of someone who portrays he knows what he is doing. He goes by the name of 1018 transmission. Thank you.

    Ive had really good experience with replacing all the accumulator pistons with the sonnex pinless and replacing the TCC isolator valve with fitzall teckpak isolator valve, I was chasing a sloppy engagement in first gear on a rebuilt 4l60 felt like a light slip or weak engagement my builder tore it apart twice couldnt find anything so I decided to pull the valve body and see what I can do. Well when I pulled out the forward accumulator piston I noticed slight play on the piston guide pin mostly on the end where it compresses to an thought hey I might have fluid leaking through the pin and this was a brand new aluminum piston, ordered pinless forward, 1-2 and 3-4 pistons installed them put them back together and problem was solved tranny shifts nice and firm.

    I have a delayed engagement in 1st gear when trans warmed up, around 155f. Even at a stop, it will need a nudge from the gas to re-engage first. Also when shifting from any gear to 1st d or 3 it'll do it as well when warmed up. It will not do it in R or 2, ever. Runs fine under 150f. Shop rebuilt it 50k ago, pan looked ok, normal buildup. They said they always replace the forward accumulator with an aluminum one. Fair enough, but do you think it could be possible that I have the same problem as you did? Or maybe that since it doesn't slip starting in 2, that it rules out the forward accumulator? And that the 1 gear clutches are just burning out.

    Sun shell and gear sounded sloppy. I ALWAYS replace the sun shell with an aftermarket heavy duty one. They are a known week point in the 4l60 family. And never should beat on a steel shaft with a steel faced hammer. Use either brass or lead faced hammer.

Felt like I hit something, no more reverse, noise, whining, etc. Limped home in first (not far). Have trust issues. Want somebody to do it right, like I would do it, to take pride in their work...like you. To be clear, you do NOT do this for outside customers? I am in need of both, Another reliable vehicle & a truck! I have an acquaintance with a truck that has a 4l60 trans, 4 wheel drive (I believe) If I were to get the truck, I would need to fix 3rd & 4th gear! In the very beginning, the puller you use, WHAT IS IT'S EXACT NAME? It looks kind of like the forcing screw for my inline brake flaring tool & similar except for size, the forcing screw for my fwd bearing installer/removal tool but, of course, Your puller is a lot smaller! Could you please tell me what tools I will need to replace the 3rd & 4th gear clutches & anything else that I will need please? This would be my 1st major rebuild! I have only changed transmission filters & partial fluid, Far cry from a complete rebuild! I am also wondering if it is worth the time & money to obtain this truck?

    Thought that I spotted some interesting parts by your hot wash cabinet? I too a little concerned re the tossing alloy and steel items together in trolley and cleaning buckets. Thought maybe for the speed of getting it all on video quickly? or experience has taught you what areas of parts are susceptible to damage if struck there? . The ole disclaimer: No useful parts were damaged in the making of this video clip! So correct, you must have the correct equipment to disassemble and reassemble, (plus wisdom to operate correctly!) Enjoy seeing other techs working effortlessly on specialized rebuilds.

    Hey Brad, thanks for making these great vids! Can you recommend a good major overhaul kit, for a 4l60e? 99 Tahoe, 5.7 4x4, 145k. Not sure yet what the problem is, it went bang and then suddenly it doesn't want to shift out of 1st. Once I hit about 20 let off the pedal and then hit it again it will kick in and all seems ok till back to first... Hoping it's a bad solenoid, but just happened today. Dammit man!! : ) It may actually not be shifting at the right rpms now, seems like overdrive may not be working right, and odd pulsing tug when braking at a light. Anyways, if you have a min i'd appreciate any suggestions. Have you thought of making a Patreon account? You should seriously load these vids there and make some cash man! I'd gladly make a contribution. Thanks again!

    Used these videos to rebuild my 4l60e 2 years ago. Put over 20k on it and still going strong. Rebuilding another one now and the 3-4 accumulator pin is stuck. 3-4 fractions and steels are trashed so has anyone ever had this issue. Can't get the pin out it won't budge. Seems like it was hammered in. I used a vice grips thinking I could wiggle it out now I got a stuck pin with a ton of scoring from the vice grips.

  • @bradstransmission3846

    @bradstransmission3846

    Yeah it happens, someone will damage the pin on purpose and hammer it in thinking it's better. The bad thing know is you need to get the pin out and replace it or clean up the pin in the bore. as long as the piston slides easily over the damaged part you should be ok. test try it with the piston with no seal on it to make sure it slides ok.

    Got any tips for freeing up a stuck 2-4 servo cover that refuses to be pushed inwards so the snap ring can be removed? The trans is still in the truck, so space is limited, and levering with a jack handle just isn't doing the trick. I'm afraid of crushing the cover if I push any harder.

    Sorry I haven't been notifications on new comments or I would have responded sooner. I hope you have gotten it out already. If not there is two notches in the case you should be able to get a screw driver behind the snap ring and remove it, some times the dirt needs to be cleaned out first. I am sorry for the delayed response.

    got a question. I got a 93 chevy 1500 w/4.3l and 4l60e. I just swapped motors with what was supposed to be a 93 but it had different heads than my older style. Anyway the bracket that mounts with motor mounts that mounts bars to dust cover wouldnt work with this engine block due to a difference in block casting. The bracket hits on the block and cant be tightened right. So is there an different bracket offering out there and what is the bracket called. Ive been looking at schmataics but nothing seems to show this part im looking for. Only other option is to modify old bracket possibly and might weaken it some. I think the reason for this is GM found that it kept the bell housing from cracking with torque twists. I dont like the idea of riding around without it waiting for bell housing to crack. thanks.

    So i posted earlier on i believe Part 3 of this series... 2007 gmc sierra Last week it started to have a delayed shift from 1st to 2nd, and shift flair 2nd to 3rd(small slippage when under hard acceleration) These both happened after a 15min run on the highway... Ive been babying the truck all week, but this evening decided to open up the throttle a bit, and to my surprise, 2nd to 3rd shift flair is gone!! Have you ever heard of this? Is it possible a valve or check ball was sticking and it has freed itself up? Unfortunately, the 1st to 2nd shift still feels alittle delayed, but its not bad...Maybe 500 rpm higher than it used to... Im wondering if theres something in the valvebody that i can clean up and replace, or do you think i should consider an overhaul? I stopped at a local trans shop during the week, and without even looking at my truck, suggested i needed a rebuild. Any input would be appreciated! After watching some of your vids today, anyone can tell you really know your stuff! Hats off to ya!

    Brad's Transmission Thanks for the reply! Weird thing happened this week, the 2nd to 3rd shift flare, has gone! Its shifting completely normal, which i cant even explain... The 1st to 2nd has a tiny delay in the shift, was almost thinking maybe the 1/2 accumulator has got wear or possibly cracked... Im no professional, so maybe im way off, but i am stoked that the trans is shifting normal other than that

    Tvpc1971 The band is 2 and 4 gear. It would not cause the delay in reverse. If the sealing rings on the pump are damaged it might cause a delay but would not cause a noise. I believe your problem is in the rear of the transmission.

    Sorry not moving. The thing is the shop I work for doesn't want me to build that way they don't see the benefit in it. I do build every unit that way at home. (where I make the videos) I see it this way, I have never had a come back when I build a transmission this way. That's worth it I think.

    Hi Brad, help me with this problem, my Suburban 2500 1999 with 4L60E transmission jumps the second, starts at first but does not make the second change to jump to the third revolution at 3000 RPM the other changes the good, same in the recoil arrives To third and from there jump to first, with your experience, for you what is the fault. For your attention, thank you.

    Hi Brad Good evening, I hope you are well and I comment and I disarm the transmission and the problem I found was that the band 2-4 came out burned and the reverse drum striped and with curvature in the center of the face where it seats the band 2 -4, also in the valve body note that the regulating valve TCC is without spring pressure, I do not know if it is normal that it does not have spring pressure or that the spring is damaged, you can tell me from this observation . For your attention, thank you.

    If it is the one I'm thinking of, it means the transmission has had a shift kit installed. the V "spring" goes in the big screen in the spacer plate. so the screen does not collapse. never seen it happen so you really don't need to reinstall it.

    Brad's Transmission thank you I do have a new rebuilt transmission to put in it but it vibrates and Shakes the truck about 60 to 70 miles an hour not all the time just sometimes I was told buy a couple people it's the torque converter but I don't know because I don't rebuild Transmissions or know much about them but I was wanting to rebuild the one that's in it that has the shaking issue and figured this transmission would be a good way to learn or try

  • @bradstransmission3846

    @bradstransmission3846

    6 жыл бұрын

    Transmissions will not usually cause a vibration. It sounds more like a drive line issue. If it was the torque converter it would vibrate at the same engine speed not how fast the truck was going. Did you mark the drive lines when you removed them. They need to go back on the same way they came off. Try rotating the drive line. Undo the drive line and rotate it 180 degrees and bolt it back up. (rear drive line) and maybe check the U Joints at that time. hope that helps.

It doesn't show enough detail and you simply work like a guy in a shop not someone wanting to show people what you are up to or may want to tackle something like this on their own.
