You're dutch.... also pretty known problem the 3-4 clutches burn up. Mine even broke in half, my rebuilder never seen that before lol. But they are pretty straight forward to fix. Rebuild is the best option, if you don't you will get more shot to deal with on the long run . It makes little sense to "just" replace those packs. They all have to come out anyways.

From my experience if its a 4wd the Transfer case seal gets hard and develops hair cracks that allow transmission fluid to leak by therefore 3-4 clutch pack get burned up bc lack if fluid. So always replace the seal on it.

Vice Enforcer yep just checked my transfer case last night & it was leaking transmission fluid. My 3-4 clutch packed is burnt up so I need to replace it sadly :/

Could be internal or external wire harness or solenoid

Had this issue. Took out transmission paid $250 get it repaired and $20 for the front transfer case seal(which normally causes 3/4 failure) and put it in and was good to go

I’m 16 and got a free 96 Silverado, it was sitting in a field for YEARS, my dad and I got it running and ran great for a weak and then suddenly this happened. My dad and I watched rebuilding videos, and for this trans it’s not that bad. We are going to rebuild and and add an improved 3-4 clutch pack kit. Fingers crossed we don’t fuck up.

Look up 4l60e transmission you will see about the sun shield and all about the replacement parts you need to fix the trans.aftermarket parts are great the bear sun shield.change out the two shift selonoids two.

Haha this guy makes it sound so easy but in reality most people can't even change their own engine oil.

I had a 1996 Chevy Blazer that would not go past 2nd gear, so I probably suspect that was my issue, truck is now long gone. When I had it I just drove it in 2nd and had no issues.

that's the boat I'm in with my 2000 chevy Silverado z71. been driving it in second gear for a few weeks. gonna be that way for a few more months unless I somehow inherit a windfall of $

I would pull the pan and replace the junk from factory thats bad to wear and or break plastic 3-4 piston with a metal one first,that would save a lot of work if that is it!

Mine has a similar issue after having a trans line rot out. A line going to cooler developed a hole and pissed out its fluid on a drive. Replaced all trans lines, added an additional trans cooler, and replaced filter, seal, and fluid to discover it now does this. It had no issues on the drive that the hole developed. When it gets to third, it slips hard; some, but very little of the power is sent to the wheels. I can't test 4th, can't get it fast enough.

Did you ever fix this? I had a 00 that just did it last month, I had THE SAME IDENTICAL thing happen to a T, unfortunately the lack of fluid even a few quarts low will foul 3rd gear. It’s very common on the 99-07 especially or similar GMC builds like sub/TB/Yukon whatever. I bought a $200 transmission and just swapped it out, rebuilt other on spare time. Let me know if you need any help.

Erik, Havent seen one but I believe you may have a good point (start with the basics), I'm going to be pulling a 4L80E in the next few weeks and Ill capture a video of my method. I can have a 4X4 tranny out with standard shop tools and a floor jack in under an hour.

Erik, good point to start with the basics- I plan to pull a 4L80E in the next few weeks and Ill try and capture my work for youtubers, I am usually able to remove a 4X4 tranny in less than an hour or close to that with a floor jack/tranny jack and some basic tools, I do like to have a very long extension to get the top bell bolts from underneath and not crawl around under the hood. If you do it first, remember to disconnect the torque converter first so it comes out with the tranny.

hi. I have a 2001 Chevy suburban with 4l60e and having problems but don't know what it might be. I put it in drive it drives but don't switch gears like it should and after a while it gets second gear but no 3rd or 4th and no reverse and rpm be at 4000 and still no change of gear. Any idea of what it might be would help out.

Why tear it down without fixing the issue why it burns 3-4. The reason is because the piston that applies the 3-4 clutch passes fluid through its seals and it ends up slipping said clutch until it burns out. The pistons are not far to go once you go down that far

I wouldn't Drive it far distance or pass 45 MPH by much. About 3500 Rpms is pretty hard on your engine when drving long distance

I have a 1994 GMC sierra 1500. My truck starts just fine. It will switch from 1st to 2nd but as soon as i hit about 25mph the rpms jump to redline and doesnt go any faster. Does this in OD and D. And now I'm hearing a loud whining noise at about 1200rpm when pressing gas pedal in park AND in drive. Please let me know if you have a solution.

I have a 99z28 camaro. Car drives good as long as your just riding. When I try to get performance out of it, It goes from 1st to 2nd fine, but 2nd to 3rd it goes to rev limiter... Any suggestions?

Just a guess, but I would say your 3-4 piston is failing at higher pressure and clutches are soon to follow, other guess would be a pressure issue with pump. In any case, there is pressure loss under WOT.

So i have a 98 gmc suburban 5.7l im having shifting issues i go in 1 gear for about 35mph n about 4000 rpm then shifts into another gear and sticks go about 45 mph 50 mph will not shift into another gear only have 2 gears like

Charlie-it sounds as if your tranny has a different issue, passage blocked, something is sticking. I would suspect valvebody to start with. At least that is low hanging fruit, pull one (Valve body) from a pick-a parts and swap out with new fluid. If that doesn't fix the issue your only out 60ish and a few hours labor.

I'm looking at a 2000 Camaro Z28 with an issue like this (same trans, won't go over 40).

Hello, my old automatic transmission moved on only one gear (like a reverse gear). I changed it, but the new one is same thing. I've tried new brain box, I've scanned the car, it shows no problem. I've had an electrician check the car and he said the fuse is good. Is it possible that the fuses are good but not receiving enough current or have some other issue?

My guess would be the new transmission has the same issue (Im guessing you put a used one in), If it only goes in reverse I would guess its a hard part issue.

@@jaychristensen4600 No, I mean driving forward, it only moves on one gear, just like reversing only has one gear. The old gear box was a new one too. It worked fine until we noticed it leaked oil. We tried stopping the leakage and couldn't, so the supplier decided to exchange it for another one for me. But when picking it from the mechanic trying to stop the leakage, I noticed the problem of forward driving on just one gear. I didn't complain at that point because I thought since I was getting a new one, the problem will stop. I've gone back to the mechanic though, he scanned the car and said it is MAP sensor. I asked how likely it is that MAP sensor will cause such an issue, and he said it's a possibility, although I take that with a pinch of salt.

@@ogheneyomaedafitohwo3519 If it is the same issue with both new transmissions then you have likely ruled out several possibilities, The Map sensor likely has nothing to do with it, but I would first start there anyway in order to see if you can operate it without any new codes coming up. The computer will not always tell on itself for the true problem so if you can get it code free, that would likely eliminate that issue as well. Meaning it may not be the problem but may be a clue, Look for any areas that electrical operates that may have been saturated with oil or has been chewed by mice or rubbed on something, check the electrical connections at the tranny and the TCM (transmission control module). I should also say that I have had a bad transmission control module on another vehicle that was bad but was not throwing a code. On this particular vehicle, oil passed through the wiring into the TCM and I noticed a stain in the carpet by the TCM (it was a Mercedes) What type vehicle is it?

Repair complete, It was the 3-4 clutch pack but I went ahead and did a complete rebuild. Follow up with link to the instructions I followed are at kzread.info/dash/bejne/a3h-0biij6yTdMo.html cost of $175 plus fluid/filter.

I know this is a couple years old but hoping to get a little more info. Mine was taking off in 2nd and that was the only gear I had. And it now shifts hard into reverse. It never did that before. I shut off truck and restarted and now I have 1st and 2nd but no 3/4. Was thinking the power train control unit wasn’t sending signal to 3/4 clutch packs. Would I be able to test this before start to go thru this transmission.

@@garymerseal6128 personally I feel you have the same problem but the TCM is probably exasperating the issues by attempting to interfere with the problem. Another issue is the reverse, one of the first indications your tranny is spent. Sorry I don’t have better news for you and of course I could be wrong, that would be my best guess. I can say if you ever wanted to try you’re hand at a rebuild, this is a good one to start with and fairly inexpensive parts for it.

Sounds like throttle position sensor. That's what mine was. I bought a 96 chevy with a 5.7 for $500 transmission issue guy didn't want to put $1,000 for trans so i took it home & bought the throttle position sensor $20 from dealer. Put it in just like a brand new truck! Spent $620 total price with the trans flush. Were in 2020 & that bitch is still going with no issues. I guess i waz just lucky this day

It doesn't grab 3rd gear it just downshifts to 2nd. Rebuilding the transmission in my dad's corvette same basic tranny.

My 98 just started doing this on 2nd transmission damm!

there are several weak points in the 4l60 that can be addressed with a real rebuild. a real rebuild is not cheap, but once done with correct updates, very dependable.

When I start it and start driving, everything is good. However, after driving a bit, it won't shift into 3rd. If I stop and turn off and let it sit for a bit, it drives fine again. Already did the solenoids A and B and fluid change. Is this an electrical issue elsewhere? If it's the clutches, why does it work after a turn off?

Conatus you have stuff in your transmission clogging the pump. When you turn it off, no fluid is moving and all the junk falls to the bottom of the pan. Once you start it and start driving, all the junk gets sucked up in the pump and clogs it.

Im having a similar issue with a 1995 GMC Sonoma 4.3 the trans was replaced a while back with about 30k on it. The truck will crank and run great, shift just like its supposed to then once on a bumpy road the speed odometer will start acting crazy (jumping up and down) then eventually fail to zero and the trans acts like its in neutral. It will take 1st and 2nd but acts in neutral when in OD and D. I have replaced the VSS (no different). Also changed the filter and fluid. Any advice would be appreciated.

How about the 3rd the 4th shift solenoid

It's one of three things it's either the fuse the three four clutch packs have gone bad or it's your B shift solenoid my thought would be hopefully it's the shift solenoid but more than likely it's your 3-4 clutch pack

Yeah? I'm having this with a 94 k1500 sub. I replaced both a and b solenoids. They looked a little different on the screen end but popped in the same. New fluid and filter oil change. Haven't checked fuses tho lol. It couldn't be that simple. It was fine before tune up and after it started slipping out of 2nd. I thought I kicked a wire or vacuum hose off. No luck in finding anything yet, it was shifting great before tune up and oil change.

Before you star spending money check your transmission oil. If you good look at the oil the color and smell. If look good check your fuses and tcm connection. If is all good get down your truck or suv follow the cables all the way to your transmission look for any damage or lose connection. Look at the ground cables if they lose or need it to be clean. If you add any Lucas or any product to your transmission put it on all the gear wait 10 minutes before you select the next rear. For those products to work if you overheated your transmission is a valve the open to help your transmission if this happen to you on a raining day probably water got inside your transmission. Before you star taking a part or change anything from your transmission I recommend to have it scanned to see if something what is not working on your transmission. If your truck or suv is reading the speed don’t change your speed sensor do it if you think you going over 20 miles per hour and show the you going 2 miles. But most of this cases they did over heat they transmission why because your transmission oil was low or something it blocking your oil. If you need to replace your transmission or rebuild it look for a better one lol but if this transmission is really bad it will have a recall and I don’t think is one. But this truck and suv do have a lot electrical problems. Good luck 👍

And 2007 tahoe has 2 recalls for electrical problems. This way I recommend to take a look to your fuses wires and connections.

Mine did this wouldn't shift past 2nd gear replaced speed sensor on the transfer case and it fixed it

No. It’s the 3-4 clutch pack. The piston inside has allowed fluid to leak through due from heat and age. You need a new piston and a 3-4 clutch pack

@@ryanwerrell7484 that's what I told the mechanic - I presented him with a new piston and a 3-4 clutch pack. He said - he'd rather just get a warranty rebuild transmission. hahaha.

If you just replaced the 3-4 clutch pack other parts will start to break and won't correspond well Its always recommended to do a rebuilt with great quality parts, I got mine fixed for $1700

your full of shit and dont know what your talking about ,, the 3/4 clutch pack fails due to incorrect pressure rise.... the pressure rise malfunction is due to a leaky valve body.. the clutches can only apply and hold, as firm as the hydraulic pressure forces it to.. tghis is why transmission repair is so failure prone, you dont look at the real problem, u look at the symptom.,. the valve body gets upgraded so that the 3/4 gets more apply pressure.. a properly updated and rebuilt 4l60e will last a very long time..

Weird my 4l60e in my 01 silverado LS 4.8 1500 has 4 gears 1,2,3 and Drive which is 4th gear of I had over drive there would be the letter O over the D. So no there not over drive my took a crap I only can go 30 mph do t have 3rd or 4th gear
