Hey Steven, I read a few of the comments and found one comment dissing you. FORGET THAT COMMENT BROTHER. There is always one guy making some claim of having 20yrs experience. Funny it is always the same exact and perfect number of 20yrs isn't it? Well Steven I have been working on cars since I was 15 on the Ranch, 66 yrs old now...we had to, no money for mechanics so we did everything ourselves. You did a fairly good job and can hold you head up HIGH, so don't listen to those pretenders. Let those comments run off Brother. I've managed to rebuild a few 4L60e in my day and still do a few. You presented a good video and it should help a lot of people. ONE THING TO KEEP IN MIND; Any builder that claims to know it all is one to stay away from. They have the attitude they know it all and that my friend keeps them from learning new technics and most importantly getting better. I still look for new techics and ways to do things differently. Even tho I claim to have mechaniced for all these years I still don't claim to know it all. I've got so many certificates there's no room to hang them on one wall of the shop...that sill doesn't make me better than anyone else. It just shows I took the instruction and passed their test. It takes more than passing a written test to be a good mechanic...remember that!!!!! Bottom line here; This is a good video and anyone claiming different has their own issues they need to work out. Anyone that really knows anything about rebuilding knows there is always a better way and any real mechanic worth his salt is always looking for that better way. It's funny the little things I've learned from novice mechanics that don't even shave yet. Don't let pride stand in the way of learning from anyone. The thing is this, You are the mechanic you are by the experiences and knowledge you pick up along the way. You learn from this source and that source and you blend them into YOUR routine. Ever notice not two good mechanics do everything the exact same way yet seem to get the same results? Good Video Steven.

Gotta 1999 gmc suburban k 1500 4l60e trans, lost all forward gears but reverse is perfect and no whining noises or nothing, just stopped going forward. I changed the filter and brand new fluid about 2 months ago, it was running better then ever, changing gears no rough changes no nothing, no warning, gears was shifting perfect, I was driving normal all day on it, then all of a sudden no forward gears. I seen a video or 2 that said it could be just the check ball in the valve body stuck in the fluid hole that allows fluid into the forward gear slot.

I actually just had the exact same thing happen to my 4l60e in my 2006 YukonXl but I do have a performance tune from diablo on my truck and it also had 199000 miles on it. It lost all forward gears and only had reverse. Cant wait to get into my trans and c if this is what happened to my transmission great video I am 44 and have been working on cars since I was 14 myself keep up the good videos

The rear planetary assembly was probably damaged due to someone slamming the vehicle into drive and doing a burn-out. If there even is a proper way to do a burn-out, it should be done in manual low. Doing a burn-out in drive puts all of the pressure on the low/reverse clutch pack and gears. Sometimes it causes the center support to "buck" and pop the anti-clunk spring and large snap ring loose. However, doing a burn-out in manual low engages the forward drum and turns the entire drive train from the front shaft and rear shaft simultaneously instead of just the low/reverse, distributing the pressure.

This is not my area of expertise, however the transmissions that I have some experience with can't be put on a bench but require a fixture rated around 30 tons. The case alone would be around 1 and a half ton. The ease of disassembly of this 4L60-E is remarkable, I could tell toward the end as you were about to remove the rear clutches that the output shaft had a lot of slop. The planet assembly must have failed first resulting in uneven pressure on the roller bearing deforming the bearing races and allowing the rollers to fly 'into the works' This must have happened at high speed or the rollers would not have shattered and larger chunks of gearing would have broken loose. This is speculation in that I, of course, couldn't examine the parts directly, but your assumption is basically correct. That truck was rode hard and put away wet!

Anytime you tear one down you should rebuild the pump if it is rebuildable,it may be but anytime you have a lot of metal from gear/bearing failure a lot of fine metal particles gets pumped through out the entire transmission and oil cooler too, which should be replaced also,if where the pump rotor and vanes turn inside the pump arent damaged with grooves and gouges,if running a finger or finger nail over it and can feel any thing other than smooth, its pump time, that one may be gone!

The cause for that planetary gear getting eaten up like that is dumping it in first gear when moving at 30 to 40 mph.. The other way is starting out in first and driving the vehicle to the limit in that gear for too long. A loud bang will be heard then a tremendous jolt to the vehicle. Red lining it in first gear to much. I just busted up my transmission in my 2004 GTO doing the same thing and I have the same symptoms, no forward gears but reverse works fine. There was some hot dogging on that Tahoe. My 2004 GTO has the same transmission 4L60E. It is going to cost some money to fix it. I was being stupid because of the type of car it is. That would be abuse on the Tahoe.

The 60 and the 80 won't make the first gear downshift manual till 35 mph or under. 700r4 since 1987 4l80e 1991 have had 1 gear lockout protection added to the secondary VB. There is a mandotory shift into second if left in first manual low by accident after 35 mph. Driving hard or light makes no difference what kills these transmission hunting for gears 3rd to 4th, then 4th to 3rd, 4th to 2nd down shifts, and 3rd to 1first kick down shift. It cost money to go fast, how big is ur budget?

You must have some off the wall 4L60e with a manual valve body because Keith Irey is totally correct. There are safety guards built into nearly all GM trannys that help prevent the engine of any constant high RMPs in 1st gear. The trans will shift into 2nd all on it's own. EVEN if the selector is held into 1st gear location. So your claim of the trans staying in 1st like you say just doesn't hold water. They ONLY way your car would stay in 1st gear like you say is if it had a manual shift kit installed. However, there aren't too many kits out there but there are some guys that know how to bypass the shift solenoids with toggle switches. Since you didn't mention any switches your trans would shift into 2nd even with the selector in the 1st gear location.
