★ 4K 🇦🇹 Vienna - Linz - 🇩🇪 Passau (D), Austria - Germany cab ride [03.2021]

Welcome to the first train driver's view video on this channel in Austria!
We begin our journey in the Freudenau Harbour of Vienna, where our train has just been manoeuvred out of the container terminal we will pass to the right. Our locomotive is a Br 193 Vectron (many of which we will pass along the way).
We can leave the harbour in both directions to get to our destination, today we're taking the route via Oberlaa and continuing onto the Westbahn line, the main east - west line in Austria, through to wels, where we will be heading north Towards the German border station of Passau. The line between Vienna and Linz was successively expanded into a 4 track railway between 1994 - 2014, including the Wienerwald and Lainzer tunnels, which pass underneath the city of Vienna with a length of over 22 Km. The new line allows high speed operation with cab signalling (ETCS Level 2, LZB) and the whole line retains the older PZB system.
On our trip today, we will travel almost entirely on the old line, which is especially enjoyable over the hills via Rekawinkel. The line generally features more curves and stations and is predominantly used for regional trains and freight. Having said that, the system is very flexible, with most switches allowing for track changes at 100 Km/h and signalling in both directions for all tracks. It's not uncommon to see 3 to 4 trains travelling in parallel, especially at night. It seems to me that Austria has put a lot of thought into their railways - and their signal operators are good at what they do.
Some speeds are included in the video, but most of the time we will be travelling at 100 Km/h, which is generally the top speed allowed for freight trains in Austria.
There are a few interesting facts I've included along the way, of bridges that were destroyed during World War II and so on. The scenery isn't as beautiful as it could be, unfortunately it was late winter, so there was no snow and things hadn't started to get green yet. Hopefully I can record this line in a more colourful season in the future. Austria does have a lot more to offer, which you will see in coming videos, some of them curving through the alps for hours on end.
Stations we pass through:
30:55 Oberlaa
40:42 Hetzendorf Junction
45:56 Hadersdorf Junction
59:23 Rekawinkel
1:27:31 Wagram Junction
1:31:39 St Pölten
1:45:05 Prinzersdorf
2:17:05 Ybbs an der Donau
2:27:40 Amstetten

we viewed this film in its entirety . we had preconceived notions that austria was like we saw from the film the sound of music ,we were amazed that parts of austria is flat with industrial. areas and farmland. never the less we realize what it takes to make film like this the hard work and time .we can still applaud this video we are rail fans too and got to see the rail system of another country . is most of europe of the catenary design .we view any and all rail videos and appreciate your sharing of these films . thank you.

Fun fact: almost nobody in Austria has seen 'The sound of music'. I tried it once, but coldn't stand the corny stereotypes for more than 20 minutes. This movie is pure fiction; it neither represents the traditional Alpine lifestyle and music, nor the Austria of today. What exactly do you mean by "is most of europe of the catenary design"? Do you ask about electrification in general or the actual design of the catenary? Most mainlines in Europe are in fact electrified. There are different systems used in different countries: the main four are 1.5kV and 3kV DC, and 15 or 25kV AC. The lower voltage of the DC system usually requires "beefier" catenary (because lower voltage = higher currents), so there are differences in the design between DC and AC catenary. DC is mainly used in Italy, older lines in France and Spain, Slovenia, Belgium, Netherlands, as well as in Poland and surrounding areas in Slovakia ansd Hungary. Everyone else uses AC, and even in the traditionally DC countries new lines are usually built with AC as well, as DC just cannot handle the power requirements of high speed trains. The only notable exception to that overall rule is the 750V DC third rail network in the south of England.

thank you for this information , we are rail fans and are specially enjoying the many fine film presentations that lororocks 777 genereously shares with us the viewers.we think the catenary design is one of the best in the world .japanese rail uses this design throughout the different prefectures. norway has this great design too.maglev was supposed to be the future but never got off due to very high costs. we did not mean any disrepect categorizing austria with the film tsom . it was mostly shot on soundstage and is only fantasy . we viewed a film in an area of switzerland that used an older diesel with a cog track which we enjoyed . danke ; ]

Of course, that was the passenger train on the new line, going much of the time at 200Km-Hr. This freight train only goes 100Km-Hr, BUT you can watch this at 2x the speed and you have the effect of the passenger train going at twice the speed! Plus, then the video is only two and a half hour long :-)

Not knowing much about Austria and having never visited , I looked forward to watching this video . I had always thought that Austria was mountainous , obviously not on the route that this train took . I found the scenery totally boring and the high walls and fences a nuisance . Having said all that , the video recording and descriptions were top class . Maybe next time , a journey where there are some mountains and valleys etc !!!!

I’m British but live in Austria and one of the many things I love is the diversity of landscape. I live in a little village in Lower Austria close to Vienna right on the Danube. The scenery in parts is very much like Devon where I grew up but then you cross the Danube and the rich fertile plains exist where a great deal of intensive farming takes place. Slightly further north along the Danube it gets more hilly and some wonderful wines and apricots are grown but one can still see close to where I live in the distance the alps. Austria is a wonderful place to visit, the mountains of course but I encourage to to visit all parts as it is very diverse and rich in its geological and cultural Landscape. Just as was the case for many years with Americans who thought England consisted of London and Stratford Upon Avon so many think Austria is just mountains, how wrong they are and how much they miss!

No need to apologize for the fog at the beginning of the trip, lorirocks. First, no one can control the weather. Second, the mist added a certain "atmosphere" to the first 45 minutes. Now removing tongue from inside cheek. No need to offer apologies for the lack of foliage, either. One advantage to not having the flora all leafed out is that it opens up the viewing of landmarks--both natural and man-made--as the country rolls by. The Austrians certainly love their wayside sound abatement walls. Or do the barriers also serve the dual purpose of snow fences in open fields? During this five-hour journey the train passed through quite a number of stations. Must ask, where the heck are the people? It seemed like nobody was taking a train today until about fifteen minutes before end-of-run, and even then the total number waiting on the platforms was counted on two hands. Lorirocks, you didn't borrow Google Earth's software and "erase" everyone, did you? Most curious. 0:54:48 Trespasser on the right. 0:58:20 A church for Paolo to explore on the left. 2:34:52 Now, there's a great run if you can get it--a light engine move on a high-speed line. 3:08:10 That must be one heavy load of timber! 3:50:06 Mid-train helper. Wasn't sure this long-format was going to work, but--even though I viewed the entire video over two days--everything worked out fine. Keep up the great work, lorirocks, this mostly high-speed/express freight run was fun (I managed to get in a beer on the second day.)
