4K UHD TV vs. 1080p HDTV - Side by Side Comparison

Ғылым және технология

Some say Ultra HD 4K TVs are stupid, and they back up those claims with science-based assertions, claiming the human you can’t see the difference between Ultra HD and standard 1080P HD unless you’re nose is pressed against the screen. But on the other side of the divide, some are saying they’ve looked at Ultra HD content on Ultra HD TVs and swear the difference is readily apparent. So, who’s got it right?
To find out, we decided to set up an informal experiment under what we consider to be real-world conditions to determine whether or not the average viewer can see a difference between Ultra HD 4K and 1080p when placed side-by-side. The results are in the video.
Considering this is such a hotly debated topic among the enthusiast community, we anticipate a bit of blow-back, but before you ragefully take to the comments section to tell us all about how we’re not scientists, allow us to explain why we approached this little experiment the way we did.
First off, it’s true: we aren’t scientists, and we didn’t approach this test scientifically - we did this on purpose. We wanted our setup to reflect real-world conditions, which included average-Joe viewers looking at content coming from one of the very few places average-Joe viewers can access Ultra HD content right now: Netflix. When 4K Blu-ray players are a reality, we will be able to compare 4K Blu-ray on a 4K display next to 1080p Blu-ray on a 1080p display, and we expect to learn a lot more, since resolution is only part of the total Ultra HD package. But for now, the Netflix comparison gives us the best opportunity to see how the Ultra HD content (albeit compressed) people can watch in their homes right now compares to the same 1080p content (also compressed) people are already watching.
Second, we chose to compare a plasma TV to an LED TV on purpose as well. Our theory (which proved to be right) was that the superior picture quality afforded by a plasma display would trump the resolution improvement afforded by a 4K display, regardless of whether the higher resolution was visible.
At the end of the day, Ultra HD is noticeably more detailed than 1080p HD, even when viewing compressed Netflix content. We anticipate the difference being much more stark when 4K Blu-ray comes available. We also found that 60-inch is about as small a screen as you’ll want to go with 4K, as anything smaller from a typical viewing distance has a much lower payoff. Conversely, the bigger the screen the more obvious the improvement in resolution is.

I agree , without using VR a 1080p phone screen at 5.5 - 6 inches is plenty , anything else is just wasted battery driving the pixels. As soon as use use gear VG or cardboard that low res screen is a problem you need at least 1440p

Only reason to have anything higher than 1080 on a 5.5 inch phone or even 6 inch , is for VR, if you never intend to use VR anything higher is a drain on your battery and unnecessary load on your phones GPU. What is more annoying is all the R and D wasted on stupid high res phone screens and 0 R and D on 16:10 4k displays

Yeah, those TVs are great. I'm personally going to purchase two SUHD tvs on Black Friday or Cyber Monday. Most likely a 49 inch and a 65 inch, might get the curved screen, depends on the price drop. I know last year a lot of the 2015 model SUHDs were almost half price. As great as I think the LG OLEDs are with they're super deep blacks I think the 2016 Samsung SUHDs are the better value considering they're a good deal cheaper. The "quantum dot" colors and HDR seemed better to me than the LG OLED with blacks that were almost as good when viewed head on as well as a brighter screen which could mean better HDR. Of course the picture quality of the SUHDs degrade some if you sit at an angle but that's not a big deal to me as I plan to sit right in front. If you can, try to grab a TV this Black Friday, prices will probably be crazy low.

The hustle for 4K tv is that you MUST buy a bigger screen size tv to see the differences he complains about. Just get you a 32 inch to 49/50 inch 1080p TV, Do a little fiddling by adjusting the color and contrast settings on the 1080p tv and you can't tell the difference from viewing distance. Save your money and get the 1080 HD and just watch your favorite program. Case closed !!

This was a good explanation. I think one of the main reasons plasma went out was because of the huge energy consumption, a 48inch is somewhere around 300 watts , I think 1080p lcd should stay around because they use little energy, like 46 watts. 4k oled is going over 100 watts now for that mentioned size.

Everything said is true except he didn't mention one VERY important factor - does a "curved" screen matter? I do see the difference in 4K versus 1080 HD pixel rate but my frustration is I bought a curved UHD thinking that was THE ultimate in TV viewing and I hate it. My regular HD television looks far superior and I hate the whole curved angle now because unless your literally directly in front of the curved screen, it gets dimmer and less visible the picture. Where the flat HD screen still looks good from any angle. I even gave it a month to see if it grew on me, and no. I hate it. I am going sell it with mount and everything - piece of curved crap garbage. **CONCLUSION: 4K is best but DO NOT get it "curved" OMG what a piece of crap BS the advertising team how they lied to the public that was about curved is better. Just get a nice flat UHDTV and you won't regret it.

Yep, specially on games, because I have a cool Samsung 1080P 21.5 inch LED LCD monitor, and on games since I play very close to the screen, I can still see the crappier textures even on games like Star Wars Battlefront on Ultra 1080p settings... When I played the crappier resolution version of the Xbox One in my friend's huge TV from far away it even looked better than the pc version all maxed out, because we were just far from the screen that every texture looked HD. Im sure if I had a 4K 22 inch monitor I would never ever see a bad texture on Star Wars at my playing distance, but everything would look smaller I guess, and thats the problem with the 4K monitors, Windows is not very optimized for that. You would have to increase the size of windows, icons, text and all that shit or you would have to buy a huge screen, but that again would make the 4K look bad from very close again... I also have a 22 inch LG LED LCD which look amazing, but, nowadays it sucks that most ps4 games they just put very little text so I have to go move a little to the TV to be able to read the text. I would like to upgrade today for a 49 UHD LG, but they are still expensive, and I can buy the 43 inch size, but it seems like it will be small too even though I dont even have much space in my room.

I also thought 4k might be just a gimmick since I use a 1080p Sony Bravia 40 inch tv as a computer monitor. I sit around 2 to 2 and a half feet away from the monitor so because of this I do dim the backlight considerably compared to far away tv watching. Yesterday I just had to try a 4k and bought a Vizio M Series 43 inch monitor. Wow! I never thought the difference could be so noticeable! Smooth and exact come to mind but really it's difficult to verbalize the wow factor vs the verbal logic. For some reason people think if a tv is less expensive it might not deliver and this is definitely not the case with Vizio. Full array backlighting, zero dead pixel guarantee and an attractive style. I paid a lot for the Sony Bravia and can say the extra money is ALL about the famous name! My new Vizio also has a hexacore processor manufactured by Vizio themselves making it speedy with apps while keeping the low cost.

Tyler Aronne You would need a 100 inch screen in the home to be able to really see the difference between 1080P and near 4K images. At that size and home viewing distances 4K would stand out out only because the 1080p would not look that good with the pixels being clear to see. Now in My home theater I have a Sony 1080p 100 inch screen with projector and I am back far enough that I cannot see the pixels and black levels are very good indeed. Can 4k truly beat this on a LCD TV well I am not so sure about that. I am just not sure how it could beat it.

  • @tyleraronne473

    @tyleraronne473

    9 жыл бұрын

bighands69 You are talking about projectors though which generally do pure upscaling of images which is why I play my older consoles on my 720 projector. On a TV where the image is FAR sharper, the 4k vs 1080p becomes quite evident especially when you sit about 3 feet away from the screen like I do. What the unsung hero is about 4k that no one seems to be talking about is the color separation...the image is so much clearer on my 55 4k TV compared to my two year old 47 inch 1080p set. Since you have four pixels instead of one represented the color separation benefits greatly. Playing Bloodborne on PS4 on these two sets is night and day in terms of color. There is input lag due to the upscaling, but the image is far better. I can't go back. This is why I don't like this comparison video, it uses Netflix 4k which is crap, only slightly better looking than an upscaled 1080p blu ray movie in my experience on my TV. I have tested 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p, 1440p and 4k content on my TV and I can tell you that the upscaling makes most of this content look better. Less so the interlaced resolutions though. One of the most rewarding treats of this 4k TVs upscaling is that the old PSX video games on my PS3 look fantastic since the PS3 feeds a pure 1080p signal and it is upscaled proportionately. Oddly enough, the PS3 looks much better than the Xbox 360 which I believes upscales most of it's content. My TV is an LG 55UB8500 btw.

Also I don't know if you know the answer to this but if I hook up an xbox one to a 4k tv do I have to buy extra equipment to it to upscale the 1080p to 4k or does it do it automatically? I have the first xbox one.

Another good proof is for any pc users out there when you go from a 27 inch 1080 p gaming experience then you bump it up to 4k with a monitor that can support it and a card that can max the settings out at that resolution you'll come to realize how many more pixels are actually on the screen. Super effective being you are sitting less than 3 ft from the monitor.

I have the last generation of Panasonic plasma tvs, there's 60 in model. And it still is absolutely stunning to look at with unbelievable blacks, beautiful color resolution, and phenomenal picture. Combined with my oppo Blu-ray player it is still stunning, and blows away anything other than a modern OLED. You just can't get that kind of richness from any LED LCD TV. Perhaps in 2021 or 2022 the new q LEDs will approach it, but in the meantime I'm holding on to this set as long as I can.

I own both of those flat screen tvs haha! LED. When I watch tv on the 4k in the living room for a few hours then head to bed where my 1080p is....Trust me you can tell you aren't watching the 4k Flat Screen anymore. The biggest difference is in gaming. But I wouldn't have bought the 4k yet if I didn't win it. The 1080 is 6 months old. If u have the extra cash and don't mind spending it then get a 4k tv if you really want it. If not wait a bit for the prices to go down on the expensive led 4k tvs.

Honestly I watched UHD tv streamed in 4K directly next to a 1080p tv in 1080p from a distance roughly 10 to 15 feet away and the difference is stunning. No joke it's in believable. But idk if others can pick up as well on this stuff considering I'm a film maker and look for things like this. Either way, it is beautiful in my opinion.

  • @benjmiester

It's funny because the video bitrate makes far more difference than resolution. Netflix even in 4k is still very low bitrate. For example, most youtube and netflix streams are 8mb to 12mb tops. I have a 48mb 720p 60 FPS blueray clip that still trumps anything I've seen from Netflix even in 4k. Video bitrate is the real issue. 4k with a bitrate of say 64mb would look absolutely mind bending. Problem is... Nobody offers that, or even a fraction of that. Only 4k gamin via a powerful PC is going to supply enough definition to really make it matter. That's the only reason I'm going 4k. I don't expect much difference in TV viewing.

I downloaded a whole season of an Amazon show called Red Oaks in 4k, and each ep was only about 1gb!! And they looked pretty good, probably about 90% as good as the original streaming 4k ones.

All boils down to how good your vision is, and your distance from the display. A 4k display is decent if it's on a computer desk and you have it sitting 15-20 inches in front of you. But from 6-8 feet? NOPE. No discernible difference. If you can afford a 4k TV though, be stupid not to future proof.

Fed up of this "oh 4k is only worth it with a minimum of a 65 inch display" BS. I have a 49 inch 4k tv with HDR and it HUMILIATES my 49 inch 1080p tv. It's like the difference between VHS and blu ray that's how much of an improvement it is. If there was no difference under 65 inch then manufacturers wouldn't bother going through the extra manufacturing expense to make a 4k set. But there is a difference, a big difference at 49 inches. MAYBE when you start getting to 38inches and lower then maybe.

All depends on how close you sit to the TV.. Also anecdotal evidence as you're also taking into account picture quality in general which would CLEARLY be better on an HDR. You could have higher refresh rates on the new TV and better color gamut compared to the old one. All of which contribute to a much better picture. Chances are, if you had two 49" TV's with identical stats other than resolution.. You would be hard pressed to tell the difference without being very close.

Polymer Clay Artist Quantum Dot may end up being a less expensive panel to produce, but it's only a method of improving the performance in an LCD panel. The inherent limitation with LCD is that it can't produce true black, where OLED does produce true black because pixels can be completely shut off. It may end up that most 4KTV's sold will be a QD enhanced LED based on affordability, but like plasma, OLED will be the choice of videophiles.

OLED has no filtration and has a much more radical contrast between black and white. OLED is the future, where QDT is an upgraded LED technology. OLED is where technology is heading. Let's revisit this in another year and see where this conversation stands.

DragonFire9888 I been thinking OLED was the better out of the 2... If I was rich I'd get a OLED 4K 3D and make it 40"! Why not have it all? lol And power it using a nice new workstation with like 20-something cores (hey I can dream) because editing 4K video kinda sucks and I can't even sample my own content =( All kidding aside... imagine adding state of the art touch screen capabilities?!

Polymer Clay Artist OLED tv's are coming down in price and LG are upping their producing on this technology since they have invested a lot of time and money into it. As production increases price will come down. They have also decreased the error rate in production as well and that is still to continue. What is going to happen eventrually is that the market will settle with 4K OLED AND 16K laser projectors for the home.

It all depends on you setup... I have a 43 inch UHD Samsung TV and makes a big difference to 1080P... With 1080P content is kinda ok, with 4K it looks AMAZING. This is because my room is a little "box" 2.5 M by 2.5M... I also had a Sony Bravia UHD 49 inch TV and 1080P content was bad, but 4K content was still amazing like my 43 and gave more impact (immersive) from the size being higher. My friend also has a Sony Bravia 1080P and looks pretty bad on 1080P content and PS4 gaming looks bad in his room, because he also has very little room size like me and maybe even less than my current setup (PS4 looks pretty good on his TV at like 3 meters away). On my 43 inch TV ps4 doesnt look that bad from my viewing distance, but PS3\X360 looks kinda awful which before on my old LG LED LCD 22 inch at the same viewing distance, my xbox360 looked a lot like a PS4, specially on games like Metal gear solid. In fact I couldnt see much difference from the PC version maxed out at 30 cm from the screen to the X360 version running on my 22 inch TV at 2 meters away (the pc version just looked a bit different because it has more visual effects not present on the X360 version, but the textures looked kinda the same because of my viewing distance being big for a very little sized TV).

No, its Samsung UE43JU6060K (In the US has other name). But if I remember right the LG 43 UHD TV I had before even had better quality on low resolution content, but the TV had totally wrong yellow color (Was playing BF4 on PS4 and the fire from the guns were greenish, very strange). And I always liked the edge enhancer option on LG to play games from a console...

Anime4 Mii Well off course I can't... I live in a shitty small island from a shitty small country. And I'm not one of those noobs that parents give everything or work in a shitty place that gives loads of money to waste... There's other priorities. My last job a full year working hard wouldn't even achieve 5000 EUR...

It depends. On anything 17" or smaller, its nice to have but definitely not a massive improvement. But on a larger monitor, 1080p is acceptable while 4K is AMAZING. The closer you sit, the more you will notice it. Same idea with TV's. On 42", from across the room, not much improvement. But if you sit closer to your TV, or go up to ~55", it makes a huge difference.
