Welcome to the third cab ride in this direction along the world famous, heritage listed Berninabahn (Bernina railway), this time during early Spring. If you missed any previous videos, you can see them by clicking the following links:

Today's video was filmed while the border to Italy was closed. At this time, passenger services terminated in Campocologno. Our train however continues to Tirano without passengers in order to deliver the wood. We'll be entering Tirano on an uncommon track, due to the fact that nobody needs to get out.

The Bernina railway sets a few records, including being the highest railway alpine crossing in Europe (2253m), the highest adhesion railway of the continent, the open air railway with the greatest height difference (1824m) and furthermore one of the steepest adhesion railways (conventional railway without cogs) worldwide, with gradients of up to 7%.
The gradients are included in the upper right corner in the same format as they appear to the driver. The arrow indicates whether the gradient is up or down, the larger number is the promille value (1/10 of 1%) and the smaller number indicates the distance of the gradient in meters. You will also see station names with their altitude, tunnel and bridge names with their length and year of construction - as well as other interesting information along the way to improve your viewing experience.
A unique aspect of Switzerland's narrow gauge mountain railways is the mixing of passenger and freight wagons in a single train, with wagons often added or removed at intermediate stops with shunting locomotives. Three stake cars loaded with wood await us in Pontresina, from where we'll be taking them to Tirano.

Grosse Überraschung: der kurze Rundgang in San Romerio - ich war auch schon da oben, aber leider war das Kirchlein geschlossen. To Mr. Paolo much thanks for giving the tour of the very old Catholic church it was amazing and it seemed like it had more function than just serving mass, it seemed to be a outstanding observation location that could serve a assembly point for the locals in case of military action and it would be easy to defend, plus the church bell could be used for warning the valley below.
It's the perfect time of year for a train journey. the snow is disappearing , the trees have lost a lot of leaves. Combined with good weather, the views will never be better. Thanks once again.

Vielen Dank für eine wunderbare Reise durch die Jahreszeiten! Vor etwa 10 Jahren bin ich auf dieser Strecke Ende März mitgefahren, vom Schnee in den Frühling in einer guten Stunde. Die Landschaft und die Strecke sind einfach traumhaft und immer wieder beeindruckend. Besonderen Dank auch für den kleinen Ausflug zu der Bergkapelle, das war ein echtes Highlight!! Mit etwas Glück (wenn das Coronavirus es zulässt) bin ich im August endlich mal wieder im Bündnerland. Das Hotel ist jedenfalls schon mal gebucht, die Vorfreude steigt :-)

Wow, a dream for many train-drivers with compilations of all seasons. I'm a bus driver in north of the Netherlands with as example the Ebusco and i'm surprised the same 'beep' sound for the bus stop what I hear from time to time in your cabine. Have fun with your train rides through those beautiful mountains and my preference is absolute the winter train drive.

Another absolutely stunning journey. *lorirocks* - Paulo - your train journeys are the best on KZread, no exception. These journeys save my life, by relieving the montony of living in a country mostly full of selfish morons (UK) and giving me respite from my interminable depression. These journeys quite often bring me to tears (of longing and joy). . I try not to be envious of those that live in such beautiful and clean surroundings, like Switzerland or Northern Italy, but it is hard to fight that emotion when comparing the differences with my own existence here. . The especially high point of this journey was during the intermission... When Paulo opened that portal in the 11th Century church, my breath was quite literally taken away! Wonderful. . Thank you!

I'm about 25 miles from Bel Air. I live in a small town called North East.
Excelente viaje, largo, pero valió la pena, excelente imagen para los contrastes de colores en la montaña y como atracción turistica, ni hablar, con la muestra de la iglesia, es como retroceder en el tiempo, un acierto, felicitaciones. Pero me asaltan dos dudas, ¿Este tren efectivamente llevaba esos 2 carros cargados con troncos? y lo otros, ¿Porque cuando el tren llega a su estación de destino, se devuelve y sale de su vía para luego volver a la vía original y quedar definitivamente en su anden estacionado? Serías tan amable en responderme esas dos consultas

Muchas gracias! Si eso tren llevaba 3 carros cargados con troncos (~140t). Cuando el tren llega a la estacion de destino devuelve y pone los 3 carros en una via donde los carros pueden ser descargados con camiones.
