Even though trams condition and traffic looks terrible, maintenance level of tracks actually looks pretty well, even way better than in many ex-USSR tram systems.

Ce n'était vraiment ni facile ni agréable là-bas. Le bruit, l'odeur et le chaos rendent difficile d'y prendre des photos et d'y filmer. On ne sait jamais, le prochain tram arrivera dans 20 minutes ou dans 4 heures. Attendre là-bas était très fatiguant. Mais je suis heureux si vous avez aimé le résultat. 🙂

I am a citizen of Kolkata. Earlier in 70s and 80s the tramway was one of the best in the world. The termini, depots, trams, tracks, wires, everything were managed very carefully and was managed very effectively. But after the closure of Howrah tram network (trams used to go from the Howrah bridge) this tramway saw a great degradation. Our tramway system is 151 years old(introduced in 1873).

In 80s and mid 90s there were 60+ routes operational in our city. But after the closure of the route discussed above, slowly majority of the routes began to close.

The two-coached trams are made in 80s and the single coached non-ac trams were introduced in and after 2010 while the ac trams were introduced in 2015. Even in 2015-19 you could get see the trams crossing each other, one tram following another and there were almost 10 routes in service.

I believe you, so when i see old pictures it looks very busy. I was very shocked about the bad intervalls, so i wait some hours and no one tram was coming. So i think, nobody will use the tram in future. Its important, that the intervalls get better and more trams are in service.

Hallo Thomas, vielen Dank für Deine Zeilen! Ja, aus unserer Sicht kann man es mit Alexandria ungefähr vergleichen...es ist ähnlich chaotisch, doch der Verkehr und das Straßenchaos sind in Kolkata etwas intensiver. Dafür aber ist die Belästigung durch Passanten in Indien nicht vorhanden...da lässt es sich verhältnismäßig gut am Straßenrand abwarten, was in Alexandria durch bettelnde Kindergangs schon sehr unangenehm war. Es ist schade, dass Euere Straßenbahn in Hamburg nichtmehr existiert, hatte einen Wagen mal im Museum am Schönberger Strand erleben dürfen. 😃 Grüße aus Plauen

Absolute Chaos... So sad that there seems to be no money to do at least the necessary modernization and repairs to give this tramsystem a secured future.... You can see clearly that the will is there, as there are a few trams looking to be in pretty good condition.

@@KT4Dani Our state government doesn't want to invest money in trams because they have the mentality that "trams causes traffic congestion ...." and investing in metros... They have enough money to modernise or even take help of a tram manufacturing company.

Gerne doch :-) ,aber hallo...ich könnte es mir auch nicht vorstellen. Habe ja schon viel erlebt und gesehen, aber die Tage vor ort waren schon sehr belastend. Zum Glück hatte ich ein besseres Hotel mit schalldichten Fenstern...doch glaubst nicht, welch Genuss es war dort abends hineinzukommen und festzustellen was "Ruhe" wirklich ist. Für Menschen mit Behinderungen und Anspruch auf Niederflur muss man uns in Europa wirklich hoch loben, auch wenn es Ausnahmen gibt. Da ist weltweit noch sehr viel Nachholbedarf zu leisten, wobei sich das ganze durch die Gesellschaft auch anders darstellt um es vergleichen zu können.

Děkuji. Počet odběratelů mě nezajímá. Chci za 20 let sedět na pohovce a užívat si dnešní dopravní systémy na obrazovce. Myslím, že hodně z toho do té doby zmizelo. Obrázky jsou pěkné, ale pohyblivé záběry s akustikou atd. jsou působivější. Rád se ale podělím o své dojmy, jelikož mnoho kolegů hobíků tak daleko určitě nejezdí. 🙂

Es ist wirklich schade drum, die Fahrzeuge sind schon ordentlich durch...doch die Gleisanlagen an sich sind jetzt gar nicht mal so schlecht...auch auf den stillgelegten Trassen. Doch der Zustand bleibt schon sehr im argen...man wartet tlw. mehrere Stunden bis eine Bahn kommt. Das ist dann eigentlich schon ein Todesstoß und auch wenn man jegliche Straßenbahn befürwortet, ist das Fahrtenangebot den ganzen Aufwand fast nichtmehr wert. Hoffentlich ändert sich da noch etwas...

Трамваи в очень плохом техническом состоянии. Такие раритетные вагоны было бы хорошо видеть в хорошем состоянии. Однако то что они ездят уже хорошо, но над ремонтом стоит задуматься.

Nice video, too bad that this tramway looks like it's in extremely bad condition, I think they plan on eventual tramway closure though, or at least that is what it looks like.

Thank you, i think the same. The condition of the trams looks very special, but they can work through some improvisations. But the intervall of traveling are very bad...some trams i can catch in morning hours, but after 10AM i wait very long and for some hours no tram is coming. I think that with such irregularities it is impossible to use the system sensibly. It's a shame...even if you choose to take the tram, you will be waiting for an uncertain time. It is better to use some other mode of transport. Maybe Kolkata can get a tram line for nostalgic purposes, it would be nice.

@@KT4Dani - There is currently 3 routes operating with an unknown future with 3 routes inactive due to building of Metro Line 2. Will they reopen, it is doubtful.

I hope, that some routes will reactivated again. But the problem is the situation of vehicles. On some of this three actual routes i wait more hours for next tram. When more tracks are in service, how many days are to wait for a tram?

There are two conductors in the trams with double compartments.. After the Indian Railways, this transportation charges the least amount of fare..
