A very special upload today as we fly on the TRUE baby bus! Many people call the Airbus A319-100 the "baby bus," but the title is really held by the very rare Airbus A318-100. Only 79 Airbus A318's were ever built, and only a handful of those are still in service. In fact, just a few days ago, Air France flew one of their 12 examples to the US for scrapping. This is an extremely rare plane, and some people forget it even exists. It was a long time bucket list item for me to fly on an A318, and this was likely the only time I ever will. So join me on the true baby bus, as we fly onboard Air France, from Amsterdam (AMS) to Paris (CDG)! Enjoy!

Even I have never had the opportunity to fly on A318. They have become rare and Air France is in the process of remove them from the fleet

They're even more rare than I thought. It had long been on my bucket list to fly one, but I was under the impression that roughly 30 were still active. In fact, I just read an article that detailed every active A318 left, and there's only 15 still active. And that's with only two airlines. Air France still operates 11 after they retired one last week, and TAROM operates the other 4, but is actively trying to get rid of them. There's not much time left for them.

Well hello there, Razgriz! Great to encounter your comment here at one of my favorite channels, and I'm so glad you do the same thing Skylite does. No window mounts for your cameras either! I love both your channels with different styles of videos. My only wish is that yours were longer featuring more of the flight each time. But it is what it is, and thank you both for such great content here on KZread.

Sadly, this may be some of the last content from on the A318. As of today, only 15 are still flying, all of which are on the chopping block soon. Air France sent one of their 12 to the scrapyard a couple days ago. Leaving them with 11 and TAROM with 4. So Air France wants them gone ASAP and TAROM has been trying to sell theirs with no luck.

Great video! On the super rare A318! My favorite A320 series aircraft! Sad that they are being retired, but it's expected. The only upside to the retirement is that the most recent retired aircraft (F-GUGH), is in an airport not far from me, so I'll have to take a trip see it before it's in pieces!

Great one SP👌. Liked and enjoyed. Also I noticed something. When your flight was pushing back from the gate on the left there was an all white Airbus A321 plane. I couldn't tell what airline that was. Although I did read the registration on that plane. It was LZ-MDF. I looked it up online and the airline was Fly2Sky.

Wow, great flight. I've been to Schiphol a few times, but never to CDG. I've never been to France for that matter. Anyhow, good views, looked very European. Even how the passengers responded during the hard landing at CDG sounded uniquely European. Love how France does such a good job in keeping most of their country beautifully rural and pastoral. They seem to know something about good land management. And... the nice thing about this flight: no jetlag!
@sla31

No jetlag, and a very rare plane. What more could you want haha. Only 15 Airbus A318's left flying today. 11 for Air France, and 4 for TAROM. All of which are soon on the chopping block. I've been to France twice now. I loved every minute of it. I took several years of French in high school and know enough to have basic conversations, so it's nice to a foreign country and somewhat be able to converse in their language haha.

Can you do a full flight from CDG to LAX on Air France B777-300er
What's the noise at about 6 minutes, heard right as the planet stopped at the end of pushback? The A319 I flew on with Delta last summer made that same noise. I had only flown on a 737 before that.
@sla31
Жыл бұрын
What you’re hearing there is the power transfer unit or PTU. The PTU is used to transfer power between the various hydraulic systems when only one of the two engines is running. This is why you only hear the “hacksaw” or “barking dog” as it’s commonly called, during taxi. Either it’s like you pointed out here and is heard shortly after one engine has been started, but before the second engine, or after landing when the crew has already shut down one of the two engines. It’s very loud on Airbus aircraft, especially if you’re sitting over the wing, but it’s normal. Just part of the hydraulic system.

What in the heck was that noise at the end that sounded like someone with a hack-saw sawing off part of the plane?
@ricgsy7825
Жыл бұрын
Power transfer unit [PTU] for hydraulic system. You get it on engine start up too. Very common sound on A320 series aircraft. The Captain sometimes gives an announcement regarding this sound so as not to alarm passengers.
@sla31
Жыл бұрын
As Ric guy already mentioned, it's the PTU, or power transfer unit. It controls power going to the separate hydraulic systems when only one engine is operating. It's a very notorious Airbus sound haha. All normal though. Thanks for watching!

I guess the price for the 318 variant was just to much and Embraer's jets much cheaper while offering the same performance. There is no other explanation for me that the A 318 wasn't a mega seller like all other variants.
the proportions look so goofy lol
isn't there something open near the tail of the a220 in 1:07:24 ?
@sla31
3 ай бұрын
Yup, good eye. That is the air intake for the APU or auxiliary power unit. When aircraft are at the gate, it's obviously very dangerous and inefficient for them to have their regular engines running. Not only does that burn a lot of fuel, but it's very dangerous for the ground workers who are servicing the aircraft. So, to solve this problem and to let the plane still have power, all commercial aircraft have an auxiliary power unit in the tail of the aircraft. This is a small jet engine that can be operated to provide power to the aircraft. The small exhaust you see at the back of every plane is the exhaust for these APU's. Now, that all said, being a small jet engine, it still needs air to operate. But, it's not very efficient to have a gaping near the tail of the aircraft. That would cause a lot of extra air residence and drag when flying. So, the APU air inlets are often hidden by a small door/panel, that will open when needed, allowing air in. But then it's closed again when the APU is shut down so the aircraft is as streamlined as possible. That is what you see here. APU air inlet is open since the plane is at the gate and is using that APU for power.

@sla31
Жыл бұрын
At the moment, I don't have any other A318 flights booked. This was, at the moment, a one time deal. They're kind of hard to actually fly on. With a lot of the remaining examples being in Europe, and Europe being a hotbed for aircraft swaps, it's not easy to actually get one. I've read multiple articles where people like me, tried to fly the A318, only to have the aircraft swapped at the last minute for an A319 or A320. I would love to fly one again, and if I do, I will sit up by the engine, but at the mount, I don't have anymore booked.

I hope they don't retire the a318 due to the a220
@sla31
Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, the writing is on the wall for the A318. Only 15 remain in service and Air France just sent one to be scrapped two weeks ago. Sadly, they'll all be gone soon.
What is whirrring sound immediately after takeoff? Is the the landing hear retracting or something else?
@sla31
5 ай бұрын
Yes and no haha. The noise you hear is related to the landing gear, but it's not actually the gear retracting that you can hear. What you're hearing is the aircraft's power transfer unit (PTU) which is basically a pump that is used to keep pressure in all the aircraft's different hydraulic systems. So, it's the PTU you can hear, but it's being used to raise the landing gear. If that makes sense. Thanks for watching my friend!
How was that yummy sandwich? 😄☀️

It was not the best sandwich I'd ever had, but considering it was such a short flight, I'll take it. Considering in the US, on a flight that short, you'd likely not even get a service at all.
