4K A 1980s Victorian Railways Scene at Southern Cross Station in 2019 - B74 S303 Royal Train

English - Welcome to another train video from Schony747. This video features Victorian Railways Liveried B74 and S303 with a mixed consist of passenger carriages at Southern Cross Station in 2019. There's something special about the sound that comes from the VR B Class Locomotive and S Class Locomotive.
This would have been a typical Victorian Railways scene at Spencer St in the 1980s. There would have been VR Blue and Gold locomotives everywhere and lots of shunting movements.
This train features the Seymour Railway Heritage Centre Royal Train Consist that was returning from Castlemaine to it's base in Seymour. The video features the train arriving on Platform 4. The locomotives then shunt off the train, run around the passenger cars and hook up to the train at the other end. Finally the train departs for Seymour.

The old V.R. ghosts come out to play at night fittingly to once exact their dominance and show the newer variants on how it's really done with the charm and grace that only B74 & S303 can provide. That dining car with Avoca name on it is the dining car they used on the train in the 1970"s that used to do the school camps that were called the "Train of Knowledge" It would spend a week travelling around Victoria with school kids on it. I remember it well my little brother fell out of the train around Inglewood somewhere , he was lucky a few stitches and some bruising was all he got for his trouble. It was a great excursion they should do stuff like that again and show kids Victorias history from a train.

More based on an F unit with just a single 567 prime mover. Although on SD type three axle three motor trucks. The VR here were the first to ask EMD for this type of truck to be developed. Mainly to keep the axle load down. The VR experience with electric suburban trains and locomotives from 1919 had them convinced of the value of all axles powered, unlike E unit with idler axles. So idler axles were ruled out.

@@Comeng_Both the B and S class are based on F7 design and mechanical parts but with modifications to suit the smaller width and height limits of the most common Australian loading gauge. In all likelihood the EMD SD six wheel powered bogie was developed at the urging of VR to reduce axle loads without losing traction. The imported F7 nose sections were cut down at our local Clyde GM factory. If your Lima bogie has just three wheels then it has lost half its six wheels on three axles.

The red/brown shunters may be the F class, unless you mean the much smaller M class. The similar Dutch and Australian versions were based on the British Railways class 11 just before the 08 and with smaller wheels. A vid of the Australian Victorian Railways F class version delivered in 1951 on a rare local passenger tour a few years ago with R class Hudson steam power on the other end : kzread.info/dash/bejne/oa2dtdF8nJm6l7Q.html In the vid you do hear both the horn fitted and the whistle. I wonder if the whistle is like the UK whistle. Nowhere near as good as the R class whistle of R 707 though. The F is painted in the second red and gold shunting livery from circa 1955 to 1965. Then Blue and Gold until withdrawn around 1987. Does not have its usual shunters steps for shunters to stand on with a barrier to protect them from the coupling rods. The local Mark Bau VR website has more detail on the F class and so much else of the Victorian Railways.

Tyler. You are spot on as they are based on the EMD F7. But running on six axles to keep the axle load down to enable running on nearly all lines in the state. The early B class had dual cabs to get a fast turnaround at stations like this for intensive passenger service over 60 to 120 mile or so services. No need to delays of a turntable. The later S class for longer distance use saved cost with just one driving cab but you might notice the windows at the non driving end to enable low speed positioning moves with controls in the B end as well. The Victorian Railways were insistent on having all axles powered unlike the US E unit design. So EMD saw the sense of three axles all powered so developed the SD truck for the Victorian Railways but soon developed the SD7 to make use of the idea in the US. A good idea from the Victorian Railways with SD trucks soon dominating US EMD production to this day.

The blue and yellow scheme came from the Eirie RR freight scheme. VR did not like the insipid proposal for a livery from EMD but soon found in a Catalog or similar the Erie freight scheme, but changed from Black and Gold to Blue and Gold as used by the top streamlined Spirit of Progress train. So when the B class diesels took over running of the Spirit of Progress from the streamlined steam S class locomotives, the colour scheme matched that train straight off. Proved so popular a colour scheme that it became the VR standard scheme for many years and eventually was applied to even the smallest and oldest non steam locomotives and railcars.
