    I had to replace mine the part from a ford 7.3 powerstroke diesel fitted and ran fine no modifications needed, hard finding these from isuzu or aftermarket

    They aren't that difficult to find but it is good information knowing that the Power stroke version works okay. You can buy these from any Caterpillar dealer for around $700, Holden can also get them but you'll pay a premium, around $900 and they'll likely buy them from Caterpillar anyway. You should be able to buy them from Ramin Auto Spares in Dubai, not sure of cost. As they are a Caterpillar part anyway, I sourced one at a truck dealer in Dandenong and they had one in stock.

    The piston cooler control valve is another spot you can loose oil when sitting over night. The rail is supposed to hold around 30 psi sitting static but mine was only holding 8 psi. Making a long crank time to build back pressure on the rail. Thanks for the video. Engine out job for that valve change😮

    The oil rail end cap seals can leak oil and you'd only notice when the pressure drops and it is hard to start.

    @@thejackaroo4WDcampingchannel Yes there are many areas they can leak. I resealed my rail and made up a rough tool for getting the end caps off. I pressurised the oil rail system with air and that is how I found the piston cooler check valve was weak and leaking.

    RPCV is the Rail Pressure Control Valve and you can buy from Holden (expensive) or from a Caterpillar Dealer (less expensive). Do Not buy from eBay, you'll waste your money. Otherwise, try Ramin Auto in Dubai, email Ibrahim here: raminaut@emirates.net.ae

    Cut the white wire, still no start. Tech 2 time or is there something else to look at?

  • @thejackaroo4WDcampingchannel

    @thejackaroo4WDcampingchannel

    The white wire trick is to fool the ECU into going into limp home mode. If that does not make it start, my next check would be to remove the RCPV and clean it out.

    I'm not sure of the size but you need an extra long socket that can fit over the end of the RPCV. Best to get one from Chris on the 4JX1 Compile/ Decompile Project FB Group

    Excellent. When can I bring mine over? Seriously, that was very instructive, thanks. Mine takes a little while to start up, so I figure its probably the RPCV too. Not sure how many 4JX1's are still roaming the streets still which probably means the potential subscribers is fairly small. I really do appreciate your efforts though. Not only do you need to know what to do, how to do it you also have to record it, so massive effort.

  • @thejackaroo4WDcampingchannel

    Benjamin, you are more than welcome. The slow starting may not be the RPCV, though. If you think of how the HEUI system works, any number of places could be reducing the oil pressure. It can be anything from using the incorrect oil through to the pickups in the sump. One of the issues I had was that when it was cold, it wouldn't accelerate very well until it warmed up, so much so, I hesitated when pulling out of junctions. That turned out to be a partially blocked CAT.

    @@thejackaroo4WDcampingchannel Thanks. That's heartening. I got mine about a year ago and haven't really taken it away yet...stuff gets in the way. I do notice the odd Jack here and there, but they are a pretty rare breed from my observations. Still its a nice vehicle, well kitted out except for cruise control and thats not something that I care about much. I hear they are very good off road, so looking forward to the Christmas "trial run" and actually putting it in low 4.

    G'day is the rpcv valve the same as a Pcv valve? Mine is suddenly belching thick blue smoke when cold. There is oily fluid in the outlet of the intercooler and it runs like a dog under 1500rpm. It's fine when it's warm. Its got fresh 5w30 oil. This all started when I had a bloke pull the rocker cover off to time the ignition mark on the flywheel following a clutch replacement. Any clues please? Thank you from Dan.

  • @thejackaroo4WDcampingchannel

    @thejackaroo4WDcampingchannel

    Thanks for the question Dan, I would think that yes, if you are driving any model of Trooper with a 4JX1 engine, the RPCV is likely the PCV as well. I think it is just a case of people calling it different things. If it were me and the car ran okay before the bloke got in there to time the ignition after a clutch replacement, then I would be looking at that. A lot depends on who it was and what their experience is. The ideal thing is to use a Tech 2 to connect and look at what both the RPCV and the ORPS are doing. The FB Group '4JX1 decompile/learning project' has a list of people and their locations and mobile numbers, that have a Tech 2 if you don't have one. facebook.com/groups/264658247280734 The 4JX1 is a HEUI injection engine and relies a lot on the RPCV, ORPS and the ECU to control how the car runs. I would also look at the injectors with the Tech 2 and run the tests to see if that identifies an issue. Because they can cause a car to run rough at lower RPM and clear up when the engine is running at higher rpm. Regarding belching blue smoke, the oil in the intercooler pipe may well be your issue. It could be coming from the EGR return or the turbo itself. The best way to check is to remove the air inlet pipe to the turbo and see if there is oil there. If there is, then it's likely the EGR and I would fit a decent catch can. If there is no oil there and there is oil in the intercooler then likely the turbo is causing it. I'll be posting a turbo exchange video tonight or tomorrow. I'm uncertain if you know but EGR stand for Exhaust Gas Recirculation and basically, it returns any pressure created by combustion gases bypassing the piston and pressuring the oil sump. We used to vent it to the atmosphere but now it gets recirculated and can cause major issues in car engines that have direct injection like the Jackaroo. EGR fundamentally re-directs these gases so they get burnt in the combustion chamber, a great idea in principle but over the long term they can cause major issues. The 4JX1 engines are getting long in the tooth now and if you have high kilometres, then your piston rings may be worn and combustion gases are getting past the piston, this is called blow by. Those oil filled gases are likely recirculating and burning in the combustion chamber. What is your oil level doing, it isn't increasing on its own is it? I know this is a long-winded response but at least it may help.

    @@thejackaroo4WDcampingchannel thankyou for your kind reply. Much appreciated. Just to confirm the bloke who put the gearbox in pulled the rocker cover off to time the injection timing, to confirm TDC when reinstalling the flywheel. I have since put an EGR blank in, cleaned the map port, changed the oil to 5w30 full synthetic. Replaced the air and fuel filter. If I can't find anyone with a tech 2 over here would you be interested in a cash job to look at it? Cheers Dan.
