Our 4g63 swap is just not shifting right so we're tearing it down and diagnosing what is wrong. Not only will we fix what's wrong, but we also upgrade several parts in the transmission since we're already in here. This Mini Cooper is going to rip down every track it's put on haha

    I primarily rebuild Tremec transmissions at my work. I see all the shortcuts people take building these things, improper shimming, or no shim 😂. Some people think they need to use the whole tube of RTV I run a 2mm bead around the center of the mating surface. It barely oozes out. I’ve never used solder to check shims. I sorta know what they need and I add shim until the resistance turning the individual shafts feels right. I’ve rebuilt/built transmissions for a few of my friends, Mitsubishi Evo transmissions are so much easier. Case splits in half. 2 shafts and a center diff. 4 shims to worry about. Just dumb luck being in the right place at the right time, I got to build a PPG dogbox for a Evo. 1st-4th and final drive. I rebuilt a stock one later replacing synchros and a 4th gear because the prior builder forgot a shim and the driven gear made contact with the engaging teeth on its drive gear. All of that pails in comparison to the STI 6 speeds I rebuilt. Those suckers have a ton of parts inside them. You have to have fixtures to hold them. The pinion nut for the front diff has to be torqued to 390ftlbs.

    A huge thank you for this video series. I successfully rebuilt the M/T in my Kia and would have struggled without your tips (even with the OE shop manual). It doesn't have a 4G63, but the M/T shares many design similarities (minus AWD).

    Super happy this helped you out mate. Even though it's a different application, so much of the automotive/industrial world overlaps from platform to platform. And sharing the tips and tricks can help keep someone from struggling or even worse, breaking something on their car because they didn't know the right order or see the hidden screw, etc.

    A couple other things I learned: (1) add a tolerance to spacer thickness when installing new taper bearings (the races wear-in; 0.0015-0.002" in my application - see OE specs), (2) measure the input shaft end play afterwards if reusing the bearing retainer (it's effectively a big crush washer - I needed to add a 0.012" shim to take-up end play - spec was 0-0.002")

    That's a very good point and that's where specific experience with a transmission AND specific components when compensating for break in vs general wear of its life. Things wearing in will be a big part of transmission rebuilds but if you use an off spec bearing or a replacement of lesser quality, it certainly can affect your tolerances in both areas as well.

    As a tranny builder my best friend assembling iscpetroleum jelly I mix some atf into. It lubes seals and bearrings and it helps hold those pesky small parts in place like check balls and solder bits. Also the freeze works good but get some bubble gum remover or similar item that has a freezing characteristic to blast just as you install and some heat in that case will really do something. I've had them drop right in with no hammering or very little force. Remember though your hands are taking the cold out of the races so dont handle or set them down and dont take them out of the freezer until the second its going in.

    Hyundai uses a different measurement procedure for encased tapered bearings using tools nobody has. The Mitsu method will work slick 👍

    Oh interesting. Kinda funny since Hyundai engines and transmissions in the late 80s early/mid 90s were made by Mitsubishi 🤣

    That's true. Hyundai says to measure the case widths, subtract the length of the output shaft (or diff), then add the pre-load to determine the spacer needed. Easy on an assembly line with a highly precise measuring tool, but not practical for the DIYer or mechanic.

    A little more work for the solder method, but way more accurate IMO. I wouldn't trust long measurements with a caliper.

    The solder was 0.0564. What did you add together to get 0.0604?

    can you do a f5m22 fwd? parts list with that too! i autocross my 1.8 and want to rebuild my old trans that the diff is wobbly in!

    I don't have a car with one to rebuild so I wouldn't be able to do a video of it unfortunately. But if you grab the factory service manual, it should be super similar to this transmission minus the center diff and output shaft

    Did you install shims on top of front diff and not under because when I tear mine apart the shim is under the diff but I see you out shim on top of diff

    Personally I shim on top because it's much easier to measure and reassemble. Has yours been rebuilt before or was it factory sealed? If you're needing to add a large amount of shims, then you may want to verify the gear offsets and bearing specs to make sure you have the right ones and that they are new and not worn, but otherwise it won't matter with the small amount of shims you typically need.

    I don't know the size, but it looks to be a common ball bearing. You'll want something slightly larger than the hole so I'd start by measuring the hole and adding 25 to 50% and ordering a couple steel ball bearings from McMaster or other metal supply shop

    So the shims are compressing the bearings? I thought the shafts Needed some play for expansion due to temperature. I'm absolutely no expert. Can you please explain?

    Great question. The topic is a little tricky but I'll try to keep it high level without going into dissertation mode lol. I also don't know your background on the subject so I promise I'm not talking down or patronizing, I just want to make sure I'm not saying something without the right context. For performance, you want a tighter fit as the load on the shifts increases (higher input torque/hp), you want to keep the shafts from deflecting or bending which will load the gears at a weaker point. Also keep in mind that these are helical cut gears so they will be pushing apart axially (along the shaft) and horizontally causing bending). Both of these cause the gear teeth to have less engagement and higher internal stresses (basically applied pressures) that will break or strip the teeth on the gear. So that's why the shims for higher performance are going to effectively squeeze the shaft rather than give it play. As far as allowing for thermal expansion, manual transmissions run about 160-180 degrees Fahrenheit so with a delta (engineering/math word for net change) of 80F, you aren't going to see any tangible change in size. Also, aluminum expands at a greater rate than all grades of steel (carbon, stainless, chromoly, etc) so if there was a concern about expansion, the case would likely expand more than the shaft at operating temps. But with 80F temp change, it won't be an issue. Hope that helps 😉👍

    It would hold the solder but it would also change the crush amounts to the point that I couldn't compare to the spec sheet since the spec is based off dry assembly and specific to .0001"

    @@InitialDIYmods the grease would get expelled before the solder crushed. Roller bearings can have a working grease film of 0.5 microns, well within the 1 thou needed.

    Hi look I got a question and what do u suggest me bcuz a lot of people that be fuck that to my car, so the thing it’s I got a genesis 3.8 with a automatic transmission but I wanna swap to a manual that be so dumb or u think actually will be great. Everybody said if I do that that to my car it’s not gonna be faster like it was before so I’m wondering if that affect or not

    Youd almost certainly be better off just selling your car and getting a manual genesis, you can do the swap, its just a massive pain in the ass

    What Fred said is true. It is a lot of work and a pain in the neck to do and you don't get more power out of it. You drop some rotational weight, but between new parts like transmission, flywheel, clutch with pressure plate, slave cylinder, clutch lines, new ECU, new wiring harness, new clutch pedal and master cylinder plus reservoir, shifter and boot, possible parts of the dash too. You're talking about spending $2000-$5000 for a manual transmission plus labor or your time. You could buy a manual car now and sell the auto car and lose less than $2k-$5k. People have done it and it's one way to do it if you are very sentimental for the specific car, but there are easier/cheaper ways to do it As a side note, sorry I missed this comment. KZread isn't even telling me what video this is on, it's just saying that it's a comment. Let me know if you went through with it or if you went a different route etc

    I'm planning to, but I need to get the mini out of the way to have enough space room work on the genesis 😪 Gonna do and engine tear down, new headers, new exhaust preturbo, new mufflers and rear section, and new intercooler piping. I have nearly all the parts waiting to do this but just no space in the new garage to do two cars at the same time. I appreciate your patience waiting for the videos though
