BSA Motorcycles Ltd: www.bsacompany.co.uk/
Birmingham Small Arms Company Limited (BSA) was a renowned British motorcycle and bicycle manufacturer with a rich history. The company had its origins in the gunsmith trade but diversified into bicycles, motorcycles, and automotive manufacturing. Here is a brief overview of the history of BSA motorcycles:
1. Early Beginnings: BSA was founded in 1861 in Birmingham, England, initially as a gun manufacturing company. The company's expertise in precision engineering and manufacturing laid the foundation for its future endeavors.
2. Bicycles: In the late 19th century, BSA began producing bicycles and quickly gained a reputation for quality and innovation. They expanded their bicycle range and became one of the leading bicycle manufacturers in the UK.
3. Motorcycles: BSA entered the motorcycle market in the early 20th century. Their first motorcycle was produced in 1905. Over the years, BSA developed a wide range of motorcycles, including both single-cylinder and V-twin models.
4. World War I and II: During both World Wars, BSA produced military motorcycles for the British armed forces. These motorcycles were known for their ruggedness and reliability.
5. Post-World War II: BSA experienced significant growth in the post-war years and introduced several iconic models. One of the most famous BSA motorcycles was the BSA Gold Star, known for its performance and racing success.
6. Racing Success: BSA motorcycles achieved success in various racing disciplines, including the Isle of Man TT races. Riders like Jeff Smith and Dick Mann rode BSA bikes to victory in international competitions.
7. Decline: BSA faced financial difficulties in the 1960s, partially due to costly expansion and competition from Japanese motorcycle manufacturers. The company struggled to keep pace with changing market trends and consumer preferences.
8. Merger with Norton-Villiers: In 1973, BSA merged with Norton-Villiers to form Norton-Villiers-Triumph (NVT). This move aimed to rescue the struggling British motorcycle industry but ultimately did not prove successful.
9. Closure: The NVT group faced various challenges and went into receivership in 1975, marking the end of the BSA brand as a motorcycle manufacturer. BSA guns, bicycles, and motorcycles remain collectible items among enthusiasts.
While the original BSA motorcycle production ceased in the 1970s, the brand's legacy lives on through the many classic BSA motorcycles that are still ridden and collected by enthusiasts. These vintage BSA motorcycles continue to be celebrated for their design, performance, and historical significance in the world of motorcycling.

I had a big smile on my face when you started in talking about the different riding modes. You really nailed it with your description of using your brain & wrist! Common fricken sense. I guess only us old farts (i'm 72) feel this way. Since i'm on this band-wagon, another thing that irks me is this constant plea for more horse power. I could go on, but I think that it's best I hold it here. That's one of the good things about becoming an old fart. You don't try to blow up the fort with one shot (lol). Illinois, USA

Hey Larry 😆, it's true. We are in such a nanny state that people are trusting 'stuff' of which they have no influence. Use one's brain, that's why we have one. BHP - I will be releasing a new video on the 'one year with the Tiger' which has 94HP. The new 2024 Tiger has some 106HP. Simply no need. 99.99% of riders of the tiger will never use more that 60HP from the engine, never. And riders of the BSA can always take advantage of the 45HP all day long. I find its more fun to take advantage of all available power (45HP) than have the bike take advantage of the rider where the rider simply does not have the skills (99.99% or riders) to extort such power. In the instance of the Tiger, keep the same power and make the bike cheaper OR more economical. Common sense - but I am just an old fart - two old farts together 😆

Hi JFro, many thanks for the comment. You are right. Modern bikes are a world away from the 60s, 70s and 80s. Possibly even the 90s. They are so reliable now, and I cringe to say it, but even the Chinese stuff is really good (and getting better). When it comes to China, it's almost like the UK being overtaken in the 70's but Japan, but this time, it's China overtaking Japan. Maybe a few more years, but I would be concerned it I was one of the leading Jap manufacturers.

Hi, great down to earth review, I've subscribed to your channel 🙂. I was just reading about a guy who has a bsa and his occasionally cut out and the dealer fitted an idle control valve which improved it but didn't totally fix the problem. The dealer later rang him and invited him in for a bsa ecu update which has fixed it 😀,so could be worth a call to your nearest dealer to get yours updated.

Good for you, losing three stone! There are so many middle-aged lard-arses out there, complaining about suspension on their bikes & paying £££ for upgraded springs, when all they need to do is get a bit of exercise & eat less junk. Also, well done on getting that deal on the bike - it made me wonder how much the dealer gave the previous owner - that's some depreciation!

Here in the UK I see many a guy on an R1 or equivalent and they engulf the bike and wonder why it does not handle in the corners :). Bizarre. Good question regard the bike. I bet sub £4200. Certainly in the current financial crisis etc. The BSA is quite wonderful !!!!

Hey Larry, now that is the right question!!! 😆. And thanks for subbing!!! OK, short answer, this was a demo bike from a dealer in the south of the UK. The reason for it being £4999 - no one buys bikes in the winter in the UK........except me 😆. Personally, I always buy my bikes in the winter and I tend to get great deals. 😄. Hello from Lancashire . Like most of us in our mid 60's , i rode for a couple of years 1975 - 1978 on '' L '' plates . Later in life i decided to take my DAS in 2010 . Since then my bikes have been dictated by cost , reliability , and more recently health issues .. eg arthritis . I have followed the New BSA Goldstar from the early days, however i'm alarmed at the depreciation . What do people think about the longevity of the New BSA brand and future parts availability ?

Hi P88ker, and hello Lancashire. These are great questions. And congrats on passing the DAS 14 years ago 😄. Would love to know others on the thoughts of depreciation. However, on a £6300 bike, after 8 months being worth £5k, i think that is reasonable. However, we are one of those very few countries that do not see the VAT as an immediate loss. Thoughts anyone?

hi Dig, many thanks for the comment. Really, that is interesting. Maybe the cheaper price from the Indian supplier assumes that the purchaser will pay that little more for the expensive pannier (lifestyle and all that stuff). Would not surprise me if that was the case.

Hi Cornish, many thanks for the comment. i have just subscribed to you!!😄. I hope you like the humour 😆. Only bike?? I am in a very fortunate position where I paid for both bikes. However, if I had £5k and wanted or needed to buy a bike then........I think I would have bought this BSA. Like the Bonnevilles and the Speed Twins, they do generate attention from older folk, and I am starting to join that 'older folk' clan, certainly at the early stages. I do like the BSA for it's simplicity, but I also appreciate that I am starting the old fart phase of life. The Tiger offers a tft screen that does more than I will ever take advantage of. I guess the younger riders of today want to see all that sexy stuff where me, I was more than satisfied, at their age, with a decent power band from a 2-stroke 😆 (and still am to be honest). I just find the tft screen a great distraction however, I am learning to simply ignore everything other than the speedometer. That said, I do think the cruise control is fantastic, especially when I went to France on the long motorways. Yes, I would buy the BSA. I am sure that the ladies would see me as someone with a little refinement and that has to be a brucie bonus at my age 😆

Hi Mike, many thanks for the comment. As a technologist, I always thought that technology would make things cheaper. This is not the case :). Especially with cars and motorcycles. The problem today, and there is no problem to fix, is people are being nannyed to keep themselves safe. The tech as such makes our products more expensive. And as such, on my Tiger, there is more computing power than the early space shuttles. Hence the expensive prices for motorcycles today. Let's be honest, we didn't need it 'yesterday' and we don't need this stuff today. And the Gold Star proves this :). Thanks for the compliment. Ride safely :)

@bankruptpensioner I'd love one of the Japanese big 4 to bring out a 650cc classic bike with 65 bhp, one analog speedo , obviously abs and proper metal mudguards. The kawasaki Z 650 parallel twin motor or suzuki sv 650, something that has plenty of Poke. I'm retired now and spend a lot of time walking around motorcycle shops with my beautiful Honda cb 500s 2002 parked outside, it's black ⚫️ with half fairing and still gets admired . Sadly the new bikes look like Wildebeest or Jetskis covered in layers of plastic. God love anyone looking to change sparks plugs. And those ridiculous TFT SCREENS are bloody dangerous imo.. You are 💯 per cent correct about playing the safety card 👏

@@mikerider58 Pity, the 4 pots are growing onto something of the past. It's a sad thing as their was nothing as smooth as the 4s. I guess regulations and all that make it the way forward, sadly. The z650 4 was great for the time. The CB500 is a great bike and the engine is quite superb. MPG tends to be super!! Love the quote of jet skis 😆. The TFT screens, especially the one of the Tiger 900, is like a space invader game. So distracting with super sexy graphics that simply are not required.

Hi Neil. First!!! Keep the bike!!! A fix is on its way from BSA. When the bike is really hot (after 20 miles lets say), this problem of stalling stops. BSA know about this problem. BSA are working on a new firmware update that will be available to you through the upgraded 4 year warranty. I called the BSA dealer at Crewe only last week and they confirmed that BSA are working on the firmware release but it is not ready just yet. So, hold your horses! This problem will be fixed. BTW, I don't work for BSA 😆. And, well done for selecting one of the most beautiful retros on the street 👍
