One of my favorite channels on KZread. It’s so good to see father and son doing things together that they love. Thanks Harvey.

Glad to see u still kick'in and having fun. You do race cars, I do boats for fun now, Mercury's the preference :) But not on video. Still doing saws just now more working them than building and vintage hobby vs. the cookie cut kind that simply doesn't fit my world. Hope you keep sharing these and it "shows" this is where your heart is.

Good to see you Harvey; does that require much clearance work for the crank-swing on the stroker? I put 1-1/2" of additional stroke in a Farmall H engine; lots of grinding; had to grind right through the oil journals and make copper pipe oil journals externally. Good stuff you're sharing!

Whatcha racing? Overbore and overstroke can be detrimental. The 454 is no race engine... It's a truck engine. Same as the Ford 460. There's a reason Chevy went to the 427 and Ford the 429 for racing. RPM is everything. Getting off the line, lifting a tire off idle, and exiting a corner are insignificant compared to longer shifts, and a higher (and subsequently smoother) power-band. Big intakes, high-flow heads, open headers, and good gears only get you so far. Torque gets the jump, but long horses win races. 700 horsepower at 7,000rpm is phenomenal... But 500 horses from 4,000 to 9,000 rpm is better. Shifting is slow. That's racing. Sprints... 1/8th mile drags... Sure. Torque wins. 502, 496, 527... They'd and do win. But the fastest, most consistent power, at a higher range is the 427/429/426. The 454 is a truck engine. Giant crank, slinging big pistons.. for low gear hauling... A 427 is a giant crank slinging small pistons. All the bottom weight, but substantially less resistance. Chevy only introduced the 454 to compete with the 426 and the 429. Yet was a slower. Hence the Beach Boys: "Heavy Chevy won't you get off the line"... Referencing that if the Chevy didn't get the hole shot, it was over.

Addendum: Power adders such as a supercharger or nitrous system are absolute game changers... not to mention turbos.. that make even the biggest block engines feel small because of the increased RPM burst from varying compression ratios... Is a 383 stroker able to run with a 454... Not really... Kinda... Yes... But no. Remember when a 3.8l V6 twin turbo Grand National could beat a Dodge Viper 8.4l? V10? I do. But turbo that viper and then see what happens. Or a Ford 5.0l could smoke a Chevy 5.4l? I do. But put on equal intakes and cams... and see what happens. Light pistons are the way to go.... And I personally believe that a healthy 426 Hemi or a 429 Cobra Jet could spank a bored and stroked 502 in a similar weight vehicle with comparable aspiration.... Especially on a road/track racing situation.... Consistent power through longer RPM is key. Heads!! Exhaust!! Valve size!!. Compression ratios!!.. So much more going on than size.
