This is really cool. Are you starting with a bendix style conventional starter or are you spinning the engine with the alternator?

Thanks Benergy. The alternator acts as the motor to start the engine, then once engine is running, produces current.

Are you ale to integrate with a BMS via CAN (Victron CAN protocol) ? That would be very useful indeed.

Hello Jim. No CAN communication unfortunately, but not really needed. Simple settings like when to autostart(low voltage), Bulk(constant current), Absorbtion(constant voltage) and Tail Current (end of Absorbtion) are all set within the AutoGen app.

@@DCAutogen Hi Nic - I have been following your gensets for sometime - we have chatted before. I understand your points - however if the DIY BMS could interface with your controller that would be great - usually CAN is the best way to do it. Its a bit tricky because your app controls the genset - speeding up or down to control output. Would be great if you could look at DIYBMS and see how you could interface to it - your market would open wide - very wide.

Hi, it can be done, just haven't dabbled with mqtt before. We use Particle Industries microcontrollers that send/receive data to Blynk. AutoGen app is a commercial version of Blynk.

@@DCAutogen Thanks for the info. I don't know blynk very well but as I remember it's cloud based solution... and that is what I always try to avoid in my home automation projects ;) I would like to control genset from my victron cerbo and mqtt could be the easiest solution. Also thanks to this it could be easy to gather all data in influxdb and use grafana to show them. Hope that adding mqtt client to your software should be so hard and you will do that in near future, because it will add a lot of new functionalities.

@@smart-diy the reason we use a cloud based solution, is for customers to be able to remote start and monitor from any location. Starting from a Victron Cerbo GX is easy. AutoGen controllers can receive a signal from a programmable dry contact relay to start and stop.

What happens if it fails to start, specifically when on propane? And what is the runtime range when on gasoline?

If connected to the Internet, you will receive an email notification of a failed start. Monitoring available through AutoGen app. We include an electronic safety shutoff solenoid on all our generators running on lpg. The solenoid only remains open while engine is cranking and running.

5 start attempts according to low battery bank threshold setting through app or if an external trigger is sent to pin#12 of AutoGen controller. We can program it according to customer needs. If it fails to start, it enters an Error state and an email is sent. Then you can check for the error, fuel etc, reset the controller via app and start over again.

@@DCAutogen well thought out. Thx. Wrt to the external lpg valve, what are the provisions to deal with the scenario of a software hang or controller failure? Is there a parallel external control signal mechanism which closes the valve if the engine is not running (likely a timer of some sort)?

The solenoid works with 12v. Even if voltage input is removed from the solenoid, it has precharged capacitors that return the solenoid to the Off position. Nice :)

Ofcourse. All settings can be adjusted within AutoGen app. When batteries fall below a preset threshold, generator will automatically start. You can also send a 2 wire trigger from your inverters dry contact relay to the V5 AutoGen. Whichever of the 2 options come first.

This depends on the current output. Higher current = Higher rpm. Between 2000-3300rpm

@@jimjones7821 we only do custom gensets with diesel. Nothing available on our site. All depends on what the customers request are. Nothing like the V5 in matter of size. Much larger gensets. But of course you have autostart control and interface over the Internet with AutoGen app. Bulk, Absorbtion charge available.
