#48 | Sailing in Scotland: Running Aground in the Crinan Canal & Hiking Goat Fell

In this episode we continue our nautical journey as we set sail from the picturesque Kerrera Marina in Oban, embarking on a mesmerising voyage via the historic Crinan Canal to Tarbert, Brodick, and finally back to our winter haven at Largs Yacht Haven in the Clyde.
Our journey begins with the warm embrace of the fading summer sun, accompanied by tranquil waters and gentle breezes. Little did we know, this trip would be filled with an unexpected twist.
Navigate with us through the historic Crinan Canal, a breath taking waterway surrounded by lush landscapes. Watch closely as we encounter every sailor’s nightmare - a grounding on the canal's shoulder. The suspense lingers: What is the extent of the damage? Stay tuned as we assess the situation.
A true highlight of our journey unfolds as we join forces with the crew of the sailing yacht ALNIKA. Together, we tackle the 15 locks and 7 bridges along the canal, forging bonds and overcoming challenges to reach the charming Ardrishaig.
The trip continues as we sail to the picturesque fishing harbour of Tarbert.
Our sails billow with wind as we navigate to Brodick on the Isle of Arran to tick off another “must” on Kathrin’s hiking list: Join us on an exhilarating hike to the summit of Goat Fell, one of the region's highest Corbetts. The panoramic views from the top are nothing short of breathtaking!
As the wind forecasts a change, we make a decision to leave Brodick Bay early, ensuring a smooth final leg of our summer expedition

Will do. We’re travelling (in dry land) until mid Feb so, if back in the water by then, I’ll be sure tap on your hull. We’re on K42.

I lived in Argyll, went to school in Oban, and go back as often as I can. Crinan is lovely, and so is Tarbert. It is a beautiful county. So your video was entertaining and brought back many memories. Thank you! I am interested in photography so bear with me as I offer some unsolicited advice! If you want to take your videos to the next level, get some better camera equipment. Get cameras with higher image quality and image stabilisation, a gimbal, and a tripod is an absolute necessity! Spend more time on sweeping scenery shots because that's what people want to see (unless this is only for your friends!) - the vista of the isles from Crinan and Tarbert harbour are more beautiful than you let on! All the best and Happy Christmas! Haste ye back!

And the very best of the season to you guys. It’s been fun watching you navigate our home waters (our yacht ‘Liv of Nyhavn’ is berthed in Largs). Hopefully we’ll bump into each other after the new year on the marina as we prep for the new year (we’re focusing on the servicing or maybe replacement of the sails & the spray hood + replacing the life raft in early 2024). See you around & I look forward to your 2024 vids.

Hello, another great episode. Can you please tell us about Polaris draught? I am planning to go through Crinan canal with an Oceanis 46.1 (2,35m draught) and your running aground experience makes me doubt about this plan. Thanks

  • @sailingpolaris

Hi Edouard, your boat with 2.35m should fit in. According to the Canal Guide d1hxd0sho1wxko.cloudfront.net/production/general/Crinan-Skippers-Guide.pdf the maximum draft is 2.7m, although you should add 10cm to your normal draft due to freshwater and boats over 2.2m draft should call the Canal office 24h beforehand to ensure there is enough water. We touched the side of the canal with our keel and double rudder, not the ground. I was distracted and got away from the middle line...
