    Comments by purchasers of these kits note that the keys provided in these kits are cut similarly (and bitting is not aggressive) making the “Re keyed” locks easier to pick. Would appreciate your thoughts on that. Also, we have a Schlage deadbolt and are purchasing more. Will be watching more of your videos to learn how we can rekey the new locks to the existing key (want to use Re-key kits that do not include the keys). Thank you for your videos!

    @@ginobean737 I read a reply to a question about this on a site selling the kit. The manufacturer says that they have 100 different keys/kits. So, if you buy this particular brand of rekey kit you have a 1 in 100 chance of having the key to someone else's door. From the outside of the lock, there's no way to tell that the kit was used to repin it. While 100 different combinations isn't a huge variety, I think it's enough to not be worried that a bad guy has a key to your lock. Realistically, if someone wants to break in to your house, they'll find a way...

    This was a good video. I give the rekey set a 4/5. I'd have given it a 5/5 because it genuinely did work in just a few minutes on the first try, but the little tweezers they gave were complete garbage. Fortunately I had other options. the follower was also not very good. It was slightly too snug and I had to apply more force than should have been necessary to get it through the cylinder. It worked, but not super easily. All in all though for less than 10 bucks I paid at the hardware store I now have matching locks on my front door and garage. It came with 3 keys but I think it had enough pins to do 4 or 5 locks. I only needed 2.

    What if I want the lock to fit into a different key (not included by the kit)? Do I *HAVE* to set the pins in the correct order for any key? (obviously not, right) For rekeying a different key, do I just have to reorder the pins over and over until it fits nice and flat on the top of the lock? Will I have to shorten the pins if they don't fit? Does this kit have all the necessary pin sizes for rekeying a different key (not included by the kit)?

  • @HelpfulLockPicker

    @HelpfulLockPicker

    5 жыл бұрын

    Each type of lock has a different type of keyway which fits a specific blank so if you do it have a SC1 lock this won't fit. Also, their keypins are specific heights, Kwikset is different from schlage, etc. So, you would want to get a set specific to your lock

  • @alarson8355

    @alarson8355

    I have a different Schlage kit that doesn’t come with a key. It comes with a set of pins that are unlabeled. The pins are numbered 0 through 9 but not color coded. Included was a pin gauge that allows you to determine the PIN number. If you look at an original key that came with a lock, it has the sequence of PIN numbers engraved on the key or they might show on the original box. Each number designates the pin needed for that key code with the first number being the pin closest to the large end of the key. As you mentioned, you can just use trial and error to find the correct pin 0 through 9. So regardless what kind of Schlage key kit you have, you should be able to match any Schlage key. My warning is to be careful using the plug follower because if the top pins come out it hard to get them back in place.

I have the correct Segal blanks, so I don't need a precut key to be included in a kit, my only concern is the pins are the right diameter and length etc, any idea what kit I need?

    If gonna use the key i recommend you first grind the numbers on the key off or cover them up that is the code to cut another key

    TSpider Keeper Very true, luckily none of the keys are in use. Never publicly publish photos of your keys on sites like Facebook too they can easily be decoded and copied!

    But I dont want to use the key that is inside the kit. I want to re-key to the locks that I have already re-keyed with the key that opens all the doors and the deadbolts with this key. How do I re-key the lock for my Anderson Storm door with the special Schlage lock key cylinder I bought that will insert into the lock case (it is the same size but you can buy a separate cylinder to either fit a schlage or kwikset key) Is it just trial and error until the correct pin fits in flush? In the pdf it says to look at the numbers on the key but this set is color coded.. Is there a way to match up the colors to the numbers on the key? This is the PDF file if you would be so kind to look at it and explain it to me I would be grateful! Thank you. parts.andersenstormdoors.com/resources/InstructionGuides/621270.pdf

    You can buy a Schlage re pin kit on eBay. You can measure the pins with a caliper and compare against a chart or just insert the key and pin and see of it is flush

    This kit is useless because it does not give you the number sizes so you can’t use this to match a different key. You have to use the key provided and all these kits have the same exact instructions and make you home easy to break into.

    I really appreciate the video but I have to say...you talk WAY TOO MUCH. There are key things that need to be said and shown, but the sheer amount of filler made me skip forward so many times I've skipped one crucial piece of information, which resulted in me spilling the springs and having to refill the lock. This video could have been under 5 minutes without any loss of usefulness.
