4771 Green Arrow: A Dying Flame

Footage of much missed LNER V2, 4771 Green Arrow, on the East Lancashire Railway in October 2007 and January 2008, prior to its withdrawal and subsequent static display within the National Railway Museum.
The first shots of her on the freight were rather fortuitous in that we had been informed that she would perform some early morning run-pasts, for the small fee of £10. Given the weather, no-one else turned up, and the crew, who were rather surprised that anyone was there, duly delivered 3, before continuing to Ramsbottom. With no organiser present, there was no-one to pay, and we departed happy, but with a strange sense of guilt! Needless to say, if there is any prospect of an appeal, the tenners are ready and waiting.

Beautiful video. Great editing. A static display is important too, but this video with her rake of cars shows todays youth that these were very capable and powerful locos.

It may be my passion for the smaller engines, but I have always preferred the v2s to other Gresley locos

a nice set of shots..... good to hear the famous 'gresley beat', that syncopation of the exhaust sound, captured so well in peter handford's waverley route recordings...

Many thanks John. One wonders whether we might, just, somehow, see a V2 on the Waverley Route again. The holy grail would of course be over Whitrope, but I'd settle for Green Arrow anywhere on the route, or indeed any other line - a superb engine.

My favourite Gresley class. I've had some great runs behind her over the years, much missed indeed. Thanks for reviving memories of that magical beat. Alan

Many thanks Bob. If I had a time machine I'd be pointing it to the 50s or 60s and the Waverley Route, to experience these loco's doing what they did best. Ho hum, who knows what might happen one day!

Thanks Austin - we couldn't believe our luck really, and despite the weather, it will remain a special memory given the loco. Just wish someone could run her on the mainline, if an appeal could be launched.
