I've seen different models of these cheap forks crack in the lowers the damper and air are closed cartridges, so can't serice it. And they gave up having lubricating oil in the lowers. The forks can have bad tolerances. They are sold under different names. I would avoid these fork. Get a secondhand fork or upgrade and service the existing fork. Or buy last year's or year before model of a Hugh end fork for cheap, so wait for those great deals that might come. I see less of them now in Norway, probably due to pandemic, but seen some.

Not only that, it was a downgrade from the previous fork and your average MTB'er would either service their current fork or buy something of quality and reputation in the more affordable range. fun fact Henry's fork has an exact copy of the externals of the suntour durolux non-eq, that every durolux part, fits with it, damper, air spring etc. one suggestion is to put foam rings in it since it has the port thingy of the durolux that you can inject oil into to wet the foam rings. next is to put 10 ml of 5 wt oil into each lower leg. after that you basically have a sealed cartridged durolux.

I appreciate that one of the budget options was simply servicing the rear shock. For a lot of used bikes, this would be the best bang-for-your-buck upgrade! Perhaps they should've done the same for the fork? Or a baseline model from a trusted brand. Personally, I even like SR Suntour. My durolux was ~$350 new. The customer support is good and I'm very happy with the fork over the past year.

To me in Oklahoma trail riding I have a RockShox recon 150 and a fox 36 grip 160 I can’t tell the difference. In Arkansas rock trails I noticed that over rocks the fox was smother but also I had the RockShox recon setting with more air pressure than the 36. To the recon would be the cheapest way to go due to parts if you do brake the fork.

I love this series! These guys are badass mechanics, don't be fooled by their goofy style! I recently experienced this recently. I been riding a V1 Ripmo: NX build. Then sold it for another V1 Ripmo with a XT build. I did make some changes to the NX build: 1. SLX 4P brakes 2. GX drivetrain With the XT build: It had the entire XT groupset including cranks and BB. Also had the S35 Carbon wheels with I9 hydras VS. NX build that had 933 alloy wheels with Ibis hubs. Verdict: The reason I bought the XT build was for the XT groupset which is great, however, the difference is marginal. What made the most substantial difference was the hubs! Damn, those I9 hubs are good! They make pedaling effortless on climbs and really help with techy climbs. I thought it was BS, but was pleasantly wrong! The only thing I would change is the front tire - I have an Assagi 2.5, not sure on the casing, but it feels too light on the trail. I'll try a DHF heavy casing. On the NX build, I liked the more planted feel, maybe because the Ibis wheels are a bit heavier - they served me well and is a reliable wheel set. I wonder if I swapped hubs with the I9s how it would feel? Regarding suspension, I really didn't notice a difference with Fox performance Vs. Fox Factory. Maybe I'm still getting used to it. Obviously the Factory is more tunable. Also, surprisingly, the NX build was a bit lighter than the XT build. Maybe because the shock on the XT build is heavier. Overall, I prefer how the XT build rides, but also appreciate the NX build. I been riding the NX build for about a year and a half before buying the XT build.

I had a recon and a Sekonda on a trail bike and I don't think I'd go small name brand for forks. The cheaper bars are fine I've used them for years with a decent stem. Pick the Uno or FSA brands or even the wake bars are reliable. Most if not all are 6061, 7005 or a quality alloy.

I love high-end suspension shocks, but I find that the bulk of riders don't take the time or have the knowledge to know how to setup and dial these in. Dialing in say a cane creek double barrel shock can take a few days or more to really get the best out of it for your riding. Most people will just put some air into for sag and go with the base settings.

My problem with the series is that the budget build is actually just downgrading what was a pretty decent bike. I would like to see a version where the budget is spending money on smarter upgrades to modernize the bike while still keeping it worth your money. Like spend on some cheaper newer rockshox forks and shoxs or like marzzochi. It doesn’t have to be the cheapest it just has to be a decent amount cheaper than the baller.

Actually, the Himalo fork is not that bad at all, for the reasons Henry mentioned. I have ridden one and used one on a budget build and so far long term the bike it is on is performing very well. The biggest issue with them, they are not quite the travel they advertise, ie the 140 is only 120, 160 is only 140 and so on, they are all @ 20mm less in travel than their stanchion length. This is mentioned in their ads but not in the header tagline, let the air out and see for yourself. You can also see this in comparison on the slow-mo shots. Unfortunately using this fork you actually downgraded the bike not upgraded. The Himalo fork IMO only an option if your forks are fried beyond repair or building a new bike and do not have the budget to buy a decent brand name. The better budget option would have been to simply service the existing fork, which would have been cheaper than the Himalo fork. The other option would have been to rebuild and upgrade to a new 2.1 damper with new seals. The upgrade should have been the option you used as it was the perfect upgrade on a budget if you were buying a 2nd hand bike with 2018 forks or already have one. I have a 2018 Pike RCT3 and it was a no brainer during a service to have it upgraded for a fraction of the new 2021 fork. IMO the Pike RCT3 with 2021 dampener and seals is now a better feeling fork than my 36 Factory Grip2. My 36 only wins IMO in one area, it is a stiffer fork (but should be compared to a Lyrik).
