450 BUSHMASTER VELOCITY ~ 16" VS 18" BARREL

Ойын-сауық

Hornady Custom 250 FTX .450 Bushmaster ammunition is listed at 2200 FPS but we wanted to see what the actual velocity was from the 16" and 18" barrels.

I've got a couple BCA uppers. The 18" .450 and 20" AR-10 upper in .243 Winchester. Love them both. I've yet to have any issues with either. I have close to 400 rounds through my .243, and about 300 out of my .450. Very accurate and reliable to this point, be it on the range or in the field. For some high value goodness check them out.

I chrono'd both Hornady and Winchester (both 250gr listed @2200fps) out of my 20" upper during a couple trips to the range. The Hornady Custom was 2331fps at 80°F, and dropped to 2302fps at 55°. The Winchester Deer Season XP was 2322 and 2290fps at those same temperatures, respectively. Both loads were tested during a single trip for each separate temperature, which came from a weather app, not an instrument reading.

The .450 is a great cartridge within the limits of the AR platform for short to medium range hunting for deer/bear/hogs etc. I would rate it far above the .350 Legend, which is nothing more than a slightly juiced up 113 year old .351 WSL. (the .351 will certainly kill the same game, the bullets won't bounce off!) Within that range of game and typical distance, the difference of 100 fps +/- will make no difference any hog/deer/bear could report. Anyone trying to make much of it would be splitting some very fine hairs. The barrel length and overall handling of the gun would be the deciding factors for me. Choose which one meets your hunting needs best. That said, all variables aside, the optimum barrel length for the .450 is obviously greater than 18". Don't imagine that a 24" barrel will give 300 fps more than a 18" barrel...but it WILL ruin the rifle for carrying in heavy brush. And that IS what the rifle excels at. When I bought "first" centerfire rifles for my sons, I went with the Ruger Model 77 International with 18.5" barrel. Beautiful rifles and very easy handling and accurate. One of them is a .243, the other a .250 Savage (and NO, I do not favor the son I gave the better .250 Savage rifle to!) It just happened the gun shop had two in stock, one in each caliber. The 18.5" barrels do not produce anywhere near the "factory" velocity ballistics for those two cartridges, but for nearly 40 years now, both those rifles have killed a lot of deer/hogs and none of the deer and hogs noticed the difference. And yes, both those cartridges with good quality 100 gr. bullets are deer killing machines! Just a shout out to BCA...they make great products. I have three of their uppers and they all perform very well at the range!

If you and your pal can get together in winter with no wind and fresh snow on ground, shoot a few rounds for one these rifles and "read" the snow for amount of unburned propellant. Repeat on fresh snow for other rifle. The 18" may not be as efficient. This is highly dependent upon the powder and chamber pressure.

@@jerrynewman1380 Got ya! It'll drop a Velociraptor 🐊, and a giant boar 🐗! But just a tad too much for harvesting food! I wonder what it would do to a turkey? 🦃💥

Do you think 450 has to much recoil for a 12 year old kid?

The difference isn’t too important when you hit where your aim. I doubt the deer, pig or bear is going to be any deader when shot with either of those rifles.

Chase needs to move his bipod up to the very front of the free float tube for best stability..... anything less is a waste.

More important than a small amount of f.p.s.. is the twist in the barrel.... I've seen heavy caliber round exceeding 2400 f.p.s.that was accurate no more than 50 yards..it the twist rate that counts.. not the velocity...heavy lead needs the right twist....45:70 is accurate as can be at 1300 feet per second because of the rife barrel twist.....trust me

Love BCA, that possibly would bother a hunter. But the 100 yards and under plinker I think it would not matter. But that's just me :-))_

For the distance you should be shooting at deer with 450bm (300yd and under) the fps difference doesn't matter a whole lot besides a few inches of drop that a scope takes care of. So even us hunters dig the 16in

100 fps between the 2 barrels sounds a lot, but it's actually only 5.5 ft/lbs of muzzle energy difference

I’m a little bit of a gun nut but AR platforms annoy me. The originals, pure, simple, clean. The original original, beautiful and powerful. Colt, Brownell copy of originals, and maybe Beowulf, otherwise same same. Sorry kids.
