I worked at Marlin in the Gallery proof testing and targeting for 4 to 5 years.I will take the 444 over the 45/70 all day long. The 45/70 had more muzzle rise. The .444 kicked harder but it was much easier to control and repeat.

I was going to buy a 45-70 but I already had a .45 calibre in the 577/450. Farmer friend was selling his 1981 .444 Marlin (JM stamped) so I bought it and have been using Hornady 265gr pills in it. I absolutely love it. Great rifle and has flattened everything Ive shot with it.

The 444 shoots harder and faster than the 45-70. The 444 can shoot up to 400 grain ammo, i like it better than a 45-70 riffle.

According to a video from Paul Harrell a while back, the 444 Marlin did not perform well when it first came out in the 1960's because the factory loaded ammo used the same bullets as the 44 Magnum, bullets that were designed to expand at revolver velocities but not at the much higher velocities that the 444 Marlin produced.

Yep thats true. Today though manufactures such as Hornady and Speer are making purpose built pills for it. They are much better.

You can tell by recoil that is a pud-loaded .45-70. 300 gr at 1800 FPS isn’t anything lol.

For usual hunting range 45-70 is much better, the 11,63 diameter don't even need expension to knock down. With a first bad shot on running game you'll have the time to aim again. You also have much more choices to reload the 45-70 and with modern rifle, can be push to better balistics than 444 regards on the SAMMI (SAMII ?) limits. As a french i use CIP limits. Whatever, this is 50/50, you can't get wrong with both. It's up to you depending on the feelings.

I've shot both back to back, and own a .444 Marlin, and I'd take the .45-70 any day. It kicks less, has a million more options on decent bullets and components are easier to find. The .444 up until '98 had a stupid slow 1:38 twist rate and is super finicky for accuracy. Also, there are only a handful of usable .44 jacketed bullets available. They are all meant for pistol velocities and simply blow to pieces at most rifle velocities. The .444 could have been great, but it wasn't.

Used to have a .444. Wasn’t impressed. 240 grain pistol bullets were stupid fired out of that gun. They were not strong enough for pigs. It only worked decently with 300 grain bullets, but it didn’t like my hand cast 300 grain WFN-had to use expensive Barnes bullets. With the cast bullets, it Acted like a sequentially fired scatter gun (micro-groove rifling perhaps?). It was much easier to hit a target at 150 yards with my .44 revolver than it was to hit with my .444 using the cast bullets. That’s sad. BTW, the revolver shot the hand cast 300 grainers better than it shot the expensive Barnes. Kept the revolver. Sold the .444.

Richard Kew. Sorry it didn't work out for you. I purchased my Marlin 444 lever and in 1991. I reload so I have 225gr. thru 300gr. Mostly 240 & 265gr. Anything I've shot with it dropped within 100 yards. Deer and Russian boar. It's still going strong. I just put a scope on it after years. I served thirty years in the United States Army almost twenty in the Ranger Regiment.I retired in 2010. I don't hunt anymore because of injuries sustained while in to don't like the blood sport anymore. But I'm pro hunting. I don't understand the argument that it is a pistol cartridge. They have pistols that shoot .50 caliber rounds. Or the LaMatt relover a shotgun with a 44 caliber revolver. The 444 is a pistol cartridge on steroids.

Also it's side by side with a 45/70. Higher muzzle velocity and 2400 fps. It's my only lever rifle. It's a keeper wouldn't change a thing or buy a 45/70 to similar.
