Most mechanics nowadays will tell ya to get a new block compleat from the factory but this method is how it mostly used to be done Nice looking job

Thank you. I was given one of these boring bars but I had no clue on how to operate it. I think with your help I will be able to..... I am familiar with bridgeport mills and lathes but a boring bar is new to me.

Still one of the best Boring Bars ever produced ! WE used to square the Block decks 'parallel' to the mainline beforehand to ensure the Boring Bar would 'bore' as close to 90" to the mainline as possible. Just say'in, quite common the Block Decks are NOT parallel to the mainline from factory and quite often are out .007" to .010" or more 'end to end' from the mainline. "Boring" with a Carbide cutter on Cast Iron will result in 'fracturing' of the parent Cast Iron left behind in the Cylinder after cutting.... this 'fracturing' can be .004" to .005" deep.... and hence AERA, SAE, Piston Ring Manu's like Hastings, etc.,.... ALL used to reccommend an absolute 'minimum' of .003" be left for "HONING" to remove as much of that residual fracturing in the Cylinder Walls as possible.

I have an identical bar. I really enjoyed the video. I'd like to have seen the hook on top for the cherry picker. I don't like to hone more than .002 either.

I have the same boring bar I have used to bore motorcycle cylinders using a boring table. My problem is setting the cutter. I set it up as you showed but never get the bore the size it is set to I even sent out my setting micrometer and had it calibrated? Any suggestions

Keep the tool warm in your pocket even before you set it so it will grow less in the cut. and also make sure you hold pressure on the tool tight on the same side of the mike. I hope this helps
