    Honestly, the Battle of Danzig (as I call it) gets overshadowed by the Battle of Danzig Bay, as it was a naval engagement that was both larger and lasted for several days, whereas this event was over in less than one. Remember friends: Poland did not fall to either the Nazis or to the Soviets. It fell because it was attacked on two fronts simultaneously, by opponents with larger armies. If it has only been one of the other, Poland would have held.

  • @trevdestroyer8209

    @trevdestroyer8209

    Why do you think Poland would have held? By the time the soviets entered the war western part of poland had fallen and warsaw was already under siege so unless Britain and France would have lunched an offensive in the west, Poland would still fall just later and probably more soldiers would have escaped in to Romania

    @@trevdestroyer8209Whole plan was to fall back to Vistula after engaging the Germans to force Britain and France to join the war. It didn't go perfect but there was still chance that reinforcement of eastern armies would help hold the line, but Soviets attacked. Bigger reason why Poland fell was Britain and France themselves, and I'm not even talking about not invading Germany. In August it was clear something is going to go down, so Poland started mobilization, but Britain and France said that it's too provocative and if Poland won't stop the mobilization and reduce the army they won't help if something goes down . As a result on September 1stonly 30% od polish army was able to fight and allies didn't help anyway

    I am Polish and never knew about this before Fat Electrician made a video. I knew battle of Westerplatte was a huge humiliation to Jerries where around 200 Polish navy men held back around 3,400 Germans, 1 battleship, 2 torpedo boats and 60 aircraft for 6 days. While they killed around 300 and wounded 150 nazis suffering 15 killed, 20 wounded and around 160 captured. I would not be surprised if nazis lost at least 30-50 men during the fight with mailmen. Fortivied position, granades, 3 BAR's.

    Agreed on the legal/illegal argument. In my mind, if you are invading a country, anyone that decides to fight you is a legal combatant, as I see no real worth in the whole argument in the first place. If someone is coming after me and mine, I'm going to fight. That's just survival. Nothing to do with laws or society. I can rant about this all day, apologies. Love your stuff @OldManReacts

    The second in command who escaped, only to be captured later had actually been badly wounded in the battle. He and his men had found shelter in a nearby apartment, but knowing that if they stayed they would all be killed, he ordered the remaining men to leave him behind. He sacrificed himself because he knew he would only slow down the survivors. There were many polish heros in ww2, imam glad despite German and Russian attempts to stamp out the polish identity, these brave men and women have names and deeds we can honor.

    Mainland USA is impenetrable fortress. Just based on various factors like geography, terrain, variable biomes, and the sheer expanse of the territory itself not to mention the sheer amount strategic/tactical knowledge that would be required to just establish a beachhead alone.

    One of the main reasons Poland had a problem, historically, being overrun, was the extreme lack of geographical barriers. Especially in modern mechanized warfare (ie blitzkrieg).
